Re: bernard perkin's

I saw Bernard only once, in the Sett End.He was electric. I remember two of his tales:- one was about his dad dying and Bernard and his brother taking dad up to the cemetery in a coffin, standing it under the stairs, and booking '2 returns and a single'. The other was about him getting a job ( true) on North Pier, Blackpool on the same bill as David whitfield, who he called ' Mr Expo 67' This was a laugh at David being locked up for molesting a child, and the fact that there was a big Exposition in Canada that year called Expo 67. If only he had been taped and videod. he would certainly have been on The Comedians.
Before turning pro, Bernard was a gravedigger in New Lane.

Re: bernard Perkin's

I can once remember being in the Rose and Crown in Ossy one Sunday diner, the pub was quite full, when the door burst open, everybody turned round to see who was coming in, there was Bernard staggering in holding is chest, and shouting "You Dirty Rat" then falling to the floor, only to get up two seconds later with a big cheesy grin on his face, saying I got you there didn't I the man was a comic genius

Re: bernard perkin's

I was a good mate of Bernard's - used to drive him to the venues sometimes. He was only on form after a few drinks but it got to be too much. I've seen him in a pretty bad state 'mornings after' and he did die from liver disease I believe. By the way his surname was PERKIN - without an 'S'.

He used to tell the tale of his court martial for punching an officer - they marched him in & said 'Are you Bernard Perkins' - he said 'No Sir'. They had to march him out, re-do the charge sheet & try him another day. He got sent to Colchester army nick. Told me they used to drink the alcohol that separates out on top of a tin of Brasso.

Re: bernard perkin's

Just to correct any adverse impression of Bernard he was a smart lad when he was in the army - served at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe) which was a prestigious posting. His altercation with the officer which led to his court martial, confinement & discharge was in large part provoked by the officer in question. Bernard didn't like it but went a bit too far with his retaliation.
