Best Pub

I like the idea of a forum for our area, so I'd like to kick off with a what do you think is the best pub in Accy kind off question?

My Answer - well, I think it has to be castle pub. Lots of good people and the beers always good.

Re: Best Pub

I remember the George on Blackburn Rd used to be good; but haven't been in there for donkeys years.

There was a quiet pub called (I think) the Great Eastern?
off Burnley Rd. Served very nice beer, many a drunken sleep had in there.

I tend to avoid going in the centre nowadays, bit rough.
Or maybe thats old age setting in

accy town center seems to be picking up nicely now with the refurbishment of panemas now becoming THE VOODOO LOUNGE .(where does he think the names up) and its only a short walk upstairs to the amazing OPIUM, where the sound and lighting are exelent.hats off to the guys who put hours of effort into these places for our enjoyment. hopefully the regency will be just as impressive when it re-opens later this month, leading to some exellent nights out this summer. BRING IT ON

I'm pretty sure that The Voodoo Lounge was an album by The Rolling Stones - but there are already nightclubs and bars all over the world with this name!

The best pub in town dissapeared years ago...

The Old Broadway, Bob Walker and his missiz June....Great Host's...was a good pub then.

The pool room always had a funny smell to it.... i never worked out what it was but i always felt great when i came out......

I guess the next best has got to be the Dopey ****** over the road.

I dont drink in town very often, I spend most of my time in Huncoat village but the best boozer in town has to be the Hope and Anchor, followed by the Adelphi now that it is under new management. [smiley=cheers.gif]

Been to the Oaklea today before and after the match.  Much better than it used to be.  I dont go to the Crown (to busy), but I sometimes go to the Grey Horse, it was closed after todays game anyone know why?

Rocky 17-08-2003 14:47

Re: Best Pub

The Swan, Bridge, or Baileys.  But for a quite drink The Albion at Clayton, or The Greyhound which has great beer for £1.29 per pint. Talking of good beer, what about the Kings, Abbey or maybe the refurbished Cannine club.  But for shear enjoyment, THE VOODOO has my best pub vote at the moment.  Hic!!

ANNE 17-08-2003 21:29

Re: Best Pub

Dont drink much these days but the George pub on Blackburn Road used to be good. Do excellent meals too.
The broadways good for a quick drink when in town and my best mate highly recommends the Hope and Anchor.

Re: Best Pub

Only really go to the pub on match days.. gotta say Crown is a good pub.. Landlord top bloke and scored a cracking goal for stanley fans v shrews fans on sat morning :)

George on blackburn rd used to be good... its a bit of a dive now.. rippped smelley seats.. quite scruffy... not as nice as it used to be.

King street is well worth a visit.. sometimes end up in there after the game on a sat night.. big room at back usualy has a turn on.. no no calm down tracy i didnt mean turn on.. i meant a turn.....on ....:)

adi 18-08-2003 10:53

Re: Best Pub

Id say that King Street is worth a visit - they serve excellent draft beers and the bar staff are friendly.

Also the Abbey on Bank Street has improved tremendously since the new landlord and landlady took over.

We now go in every Sunday after football and they put food on for us which is excellent.

They is always something going on during the week and generally speaking it's a very friendly pub.

glad you like King Street Ruud.

its a very nice place and as mentioned the staff are polite and friendly.

most importantly though the beers excellent and cheap and they dont attract any idoits either. Oh and they are building a kitchen so food will be available soon aswell!!

firstly if your on about the duke in accy its a dump and always has been and the arcade bar unless some miracle has happened in the last month or two its been dead all year went in a few times over the summer only stayed once the other times turned round and walked back out as no more than ten people in and a cpl of times empty if you want a good night and not a sign of any trouble try the hope and anchor good beer bar staff pleasent and a good atmosphere

Tealeaf 03-01-2005 23:40

Re: Best Pub

Are you after a pub or a bar? If its the latter, can't help you. If its the former, then try the following tests:

1) Is the pub in the CAMRA good pub guide? There are 3 pubs in Accy & 1 in Church in the 2005/5 guide. If its one of these 4,then its got to be good.

2) So now pick from 4. What makes a good traditional pub, other than good ale? Ambiance and community spirit, I suppose, is the answer. How is that measured? By a good darts and dominoe team. Question - Which pub is currently top of the Hyndburn Darts and Does League? Answer - the Stag at Church, as per the good beer guide.

The Phoenix Bar

The Phoenix Bar. Does anyone remember this tiny bar opening in 1990? It was on the bus station above the travelagents next door to the newsagent., it also used to be an indian I think. It was mad, a room about 15ft square and about 150 people squeezed into it on a Friday & Saturday. They shut it because of fire risk!!!! Typical, just wondered if there's only me who seems to remember it??
