We used to go from Ossy to the Bridge (?) at Clayton - anyway it was on the main road next to the canal (or railway?) bridge. Lion pub. Not sure why we went there - change of scene, better beer, some lasses - can't remember!

Dont remember the Albion or the Volunteers as being a Lion pub , thought the Commercial a bit higher up on the same side was the only Lion pub ..... but stand to be corrected :D

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.
question for the old timers and coffin dodgers , the Hare and Hounds at Clayton was a Thwaites house (I think) , what brewery was the Load of Mischief , must have rode past it a thousand times but can't remember , .......over to you Alan Gilmartin :D

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.
I was thinking the Load of Mischief was a Thwaites pub, it just seemed a bit odd two pubs opposite each other being the same Brewery thats why I asked ;)
As Cashy says the Castle was definatly a Lion pub , not to sure about the 'Old England at Home " for some reason I don't remember any green signage (Pubs used be coloured coded in them days ) ......... there has to be a story somewhere about how that place got it's name , methinks its got to be something related to the either the Crimea or the Boer war .....probably should be a new thread for Katex, Retlaw and Atarah to get their teeth into :D |

It would appear the Stag is only temporary closed, on the orders of the local Health & Safety officers. The place was not fitted with emergency lighting/emergency exit signs. |

Was it the Lone Star or the Load Star near Ribchester. What a place for the talent back in the 70's. You had to know someone who had a car to get there!!! Met my 1st wife there and I still have nothing but good memories about the place!!!! :alright:

Not first pint, but first pint of bitter. When I worked on the factory bottom, one lunchtime on a Saturday, when we were doing a bit of overtime, one of the tacklers from WF Chambers bought me my first pint of bitter in the Woodnook Inn? - at the corner of Marsden Street and Carter Street - which was a Thwaites pub if I remember rightly. I never really went back to drinking tea after that.

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.
I once participated in the 'rescue' of a WMC.
It was 'going under' due to the devious syphoning off of funds by an earlier committee. The financial transactions were not properly monitored, so that theft was possible without risk of detection. When we were told of examples such as - ..a committee member making a 200 mile round trip during his holiday, for the sole purpose of doing his 'job' of emptying the one armed bandits .... you become aware that fiddling by committee members was accepted and the others 'turned a blind eye' and had their own perks. The new committee I was part of for about a year, were aware of the past fiddling and were determined to put the club back on its feet. I worked two evenings a week selling raffle tickets for the small reward of two free pints of beer. As the club regained its viability, some of us left the committee and gradually the culture of the committee's financial perks crept back PS I have posted this in the new thread also |
Re: 1st pint, 1st local.
Back to Pubs! What was the worst thing that happened to pubs, yours or all pubs! My 2 points being, knocking all the rooms into one big area, couldn't find a quiet room anymore. Kids of any age being allowed!!!! I blame the drunken mobs you see around towns now on this! watched drunks in pubs behaving stupid and nothing being done and thinking this is the way to behave!!! What ever happened to sitting outside with crisps and pop????
