Shared memories apparently, DtheP47, made him thirsty thinking about it. Now this next bit has nothing to do with Accrington but definitely to do with the amber liquid. With the cost of beer going up and up, a few years ago himself decided to go down the home brew track. Assured me that the initial outlay would soon pay for itself, home brews being but a fraction of the retail price of beer.
Working on the premise that the more you drink the more you save, he was very enthusiastic and by the time he’d done the last brew he had filled some 4,200 stubbies (Aussie bottles of 375 mls). He gave a lot away to friends as he needed the bottles and even he couldn’t drink the stuff fast enough to keep up the supply of empties. It was so successful that it became like an addiction but he eventually gave the game away a while ago – still have a few bottles of Stout left which are about 7 years old. Not game to try them….
…and I might add that I’m still waiting for the savings.

Re: 1st pint, 1st local.

I've started drinking natural beers at home usually 5% or above, last week Joan cam up with two from Aldi, from a Scottish brewing company, think they were specials, although not 5% they were very tasty. Robbie Burns 4.2% and William Wallace 4.5% burns is a darker beer Wallace is a blond, the trouble with Aldi is they only get so many and when that's gone there's no more, Joan managed to pick me up 12 of each on Monday had a Wallace last night

Home brewing had (has) its followers back in the 70's and 80's for sure :) There used to be a cracking Homebrew Supplies shop on Cross Street just round the corner from the Warners. I never really got used to the smell but as most people know you could tweak the strengths and that was the attraction for sure. The current Mrs P was never happy with the big fermenting jars under the stairs or me taking over the kitchen when bottling.
Truth be told now though there is such a range of good bottled beers on offer everywhere as Mr J says, it's not worth the faff these days.;)

And if you are a people person (like me  **)it's much more convivial propping up a bar engaging in intelligent conversations ("some not so intelligent if last night in the Forts was anything to go by" shouts Mrs P)
Well I blame the 5 pints of Kelham Island Tin Can ;). Good job they didn't have Thornbridges Jaipur on !!

** No heckling from the back thank you :D

One of my sons does home brewing when he has the time but not the straight-forward, run-of-the-mill brews. He adds a bit of this and a bit of that with great results. Enjoys brewing – think he takes after me for that, though my brewing is more like an eye of a toad, leg of a frog, with the odd newt thrown in sort of brew……

Home drinking is great - relaxing and enjoying with no worries about donating to the Government coffers through being caught by the boys in blue, should a person be foolish enough to drink and drive. Personally I don't like beer (dare I say that on this thread) - think it's horrible stuff, but do enjoy other liquid 'refreshments'. Cheers!!!!

What in the sam hell is a discerning home home drinker:confused: Someone who sips on a brewskie and, instead of belching, discusses its flavor, its bucket, (I love that show, particularly Hyacinth), its discreet hint of smokiness and all that horse manure?

Or is more like how I interpret it. Everything is  as long as you can discern the fridge through a haze of alcohol and fragrant smoke:theband:

Drunk in most pubs in Accy,Ossy and Blackburn in the 60s. The last pint I had in Accy was in the Black Horse. about 1969. Moved south for work and crap ale.

Well blow me down with a feather Mog.. Yes I do remember it well. Wayne was drinking in the bar before hand. Dont know why we done it though but he tried to autograph my hand and I wasnt having any of that. Are you sure about Bob, I was told he had passed away a few years ago. You sure because he would be 67 just before this coming christmas. Living with his mam sounds a bit unusal mate.

Jezz reckons that about Bob...did question it with him because I too (and Connie) had heard he has passed ???
Truth be told I reckon I would have heard from Dennis Entwistle if he was back in town ???
I'll do some checking with all the usual suspects.

I lived next door to Gerry Moores in Church from 1995 to 2002.

So he has got himself yet another woman. His 2nd wife left him and a rowdy girlfriend moved in during those years.

Any woman will be an improvement on that rowdy female - they battled on the street as well as in the house (police were called often).

She was the main reason I moved.

If I ever did fall down the Con stairs, it would have been down to the copious amounts of ale that i had consumed and not a poxy autograph, but I did have a bit of a chat with him. Thought Wayne was a bit odd walking through the park um um um um um um um.

Tried on many occasion to do a pub crawl from many places in Acc, Church, Ossy, Clayton. Never managed to complete any of them. Remember on bank holiday in 1965. Think the pubs in Clayton or great Harewood were open all day for some reason.Whit walk maybe. Bob Burnside, Chris Meredew, Ian Entwistle and loads more of us from the Bridge decided we were going to walk the route to Harrod and have a pint in every pub. What clowns we were in them days. Started at the Greyhound in Altham or Clayton or wherever it is. Had a bit of a barny with Enti, nothing serious then got rat ars**d. Can't remember moving from there. Think that was the last of my pub crawls.

Bay Horse is where I served my time Dave, Bill was the landlord at the time, it was a meeting place for lots of teenagers most under 18:D We all used to use the little tap room on the right of the bar, a local football team ran from there too Surf United were a very good team in their day

Used the Railway 1964/65. Used to go in there before going up Con. Used to go out with a nice gal at the time. Drank with a couple of older pit lads now and again in there Adam Sinetti and Doug. Can't think of his last name. He used the pop club quite a bit. Can't remember the landlord but barmaid was Jessie Kenyon from Haslinden. Good posh pub at the time.

I know this is an old one cashy but the mention of the Oak Tree bought back some memories. Dave Radcliffes mam and dad kept that place late fifties early sixties. Nelly was his mams name. Use to be a bit of a singer. Opportunity knocks rings a bell. They took over the pub going up Manchester road on the right hand side past police/fire station. Dave was at St Christopher's left in 60, nice chap. second cousin of mine or something. last time I heard he was a brickie. Younger brother called Eddie

Grants formerly the Hargreaves on Manchester Road, home of the Big Clock Brewery.
The copper fermenting vessels can be seen behind the bar.

If the pub was well designed the bar was next to the toilets, these days it seems with the modern pub the toilets are always two floors up.

Who thought of that one?
Extra plumbing for it to flow into the drain we used to stand over downstairs.

Do you mean The Astronaut, it's the only one I can remember on there except for a working mens club at the top end roundabout where the Halfax is now?

Tried my first pint in the "Black Bull" in Huncoat when I was 14 years old, now at the age of 69 I will never be able to recreate the memory, as I believe the pub has been sold to a builder of asian descent.

Nothing wrong there but as alcohol is against the Muslim religion it obviously will never be a place of quiet contemplation over a pint of ale in order to put the world to rights.

Aah well, the pub has been going downhill for many years, so not really a loss.

I knew how to find it but trying to describe it now I'm struggling a bit :) it was kind of at the back of the room if you know what I mean? There were two entrance doors into the pub, one at either side of the downstairs area &
there was also the Apollo nightclub upstairs - had one of the smallest of dancefloors I've seen but had some good times up there

Used to pop in there after doing afternoon shift at Huncoat Pit. Remember it being damn good ale. The one by the Railway was ok too.
