Euro 2012

With the ELP and Champions League all done and dusted the creeping feeling of exictement is now increasing the closer it gets to Euro 2012...this time the build up is not the usual stuff about England actually winning it but there's plenty of good football ahead.

What are Englands chances?... who will win it?

I dunno .... with the Italians under yet another match fixing scandal cloud, and Hodgson calling up Martin Who? instead of Ferdinand, it's going to be interesting to say the least ... England's chances? Zero. They don't have a squad, they have a simmering controversy and a joke for a manager. To win? Germany ... as disciplined as the Waffen SS, and with lots of talent too. I bet on the Kings for the Stanley Cup, so I might just be on a roll.;)

Not moving me either, I'll probably watch some of the matches, but at least there's none of this talking England up this time, none of this we can win it, we might actually do better than everybody thinks, I'm with cashy though I fancy Spain, very good outfit

Seeing they have just left Luton on a British Airways, normally configured aeroplane, all economy, I don't rate their chances.

Maybe I am a little bit annoyed they did not use us, unlike the under 21's and several of the premiership do. :D

But on a serious note, Roy Hodgson....... They would have a better chance with Brendan Rodgers.

Watched both group B games tonight, might need to re-assess my view of Holland after tonights showing against Denmark, the Danes looked good, solid & businesslike after an initial starting phase of cautiousness.

Portugal could still be a contender if they turn it up like they did after going behind to the Hermans & I was so looking forward to taking the pish on Monday......:( looks like that's on hold for the time being.

Bit harsh Cashy..reckon it was more or less a home game for the Germans..Portugal did stir it up in the second half and looked like scoring.. turned out to be a decent game in the last 15 mins.

Holland were very poor last night Dave, even though they had 20 odd shots they never looked like scoring Van Percy was well of beam all the match.

The only real problem I could see was that the forwards weren't able to keep the ball or hold it up, think that Fat Lad will make the difference after he's finished his enforced sabbatical. Lets just hope that we get a bit better ref too, I was dreading one of the frogs going down in the box it would have been a certain penalty, the ref missed a lot of fouls by the frogs and very little by England

The heat has to be a factor but I don't think the game was played at a fast pace.. if we get tired so early in the first match I can't see us coping to well when (if) it comes to any hell-for-leather knock out games.

Was a good fast paced game....some of the TV pundits are saying we are a better side than Russia ,Poland and such but if England end up in a scrap with these teams I don't fancy our chances.. they don't get tired when it gets tough.

carpon 12-06-2012 21:20

Re: Euro 2012

For me, the performance against the French was a reasonable "rearguard" action...that said I think we dropped a bit too deep for my liking. Nasri's goal typified how dropping too deep can create problems.:o

I was reading the match stats and whilst not realizing whilst watching the game....they show England's three attempts on goal in 90 minutes highlights the lack of creativity when you sit back and defend.:o

I think we need to "press" the ball a bit more and move the ball around a bit quicker when we do have it....we've got pace so why not use it???

As has been said, I think we'll hold the ball up better when Rooney comes back into the side. I think we'll have to beat the Swedes on Friday, so similiar quality crosses to the one that Lescott scored with will be the order of the day as the Swedes look a bit clueless when it comes to marking at set pieces.

I wouldn't want to go into the Ukraine game knowing we need to win to progress.:o

I think England will get through to the next round but will have to do it with a rear guard action, their strength lies in a packed defense and hope to score on the break or set piece. To get any further they have to replace Milner and hope Rooney has his shooting boots on.

I think the Irish will be Paddy Whacked by Spain tonight. On watching last nights match between Holland v Germany I think Germany must be favourites to win it.

England were average and the ref didn't help much either, it was probably a good thing Rooney was suspended because I think his temper would have got him sent off.

Good win against a not to good Sweden and some positives.. Wellbeck has bags of energy and looks like he could play everyday... Walcott ran at them when he came on..Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole were good in defence...Gerrard looked at it and Caroll looked hungry.
Negatives are.. Milner looks knackered after 20 mins.. Terry is lacking pace and will get caught out against any good forwards...but all in all job done!

Think Young who has been poor in both games, should be left out against Ukraine, Milner has bags of energy to me, but not the man fer england. Happy that gypos back fer Ukraine, would play him just back from Caroll n Wellbeck. If we get a better result than France, Can avoid Spain in next round i reckon.

Yep I agree.. Rooney could be used just behind the forward.. and seeing as he won't be match fit can't see any reason to play him as an out n out forward.. to me if Rooney gets a start it should be in an attacking midfield supporting Defoe/Caroll/Welbeck.

Both Carroll & Wellbeck scoring tonight gives Hodgson a difficult & welcome problem....both played well tonight & scored !!! Young had a poor game so naturally he's under the microscope !!!

But Young played out on the wing tonight so by bringing back Rooney (which given his "talisman" status is a given ) and the fact that Walcott had a good game when he came on....suddenly Hodgson has a dilemma !!!

One things for sure....unlike Capello, Hodgson doesn't seem afraid to tinker with formations and try to adapt to situations. His answer to this particular selection problem will be intriguing to say the least.

However, erring on the side of caution....I'd still say we're dropping to deep at times, we don't press the ball enough and we're still a bit too hesitant and slow going forward, although the third goal was a damn good team goal, quite incisive which had around eleven passes and a sublime finish to boot by Wellbeck !!!:D

Personally speaking, I think the fact that Rooney & Wellbeck playing together at United will probably have a great bearing on Hodgson's next selection. Somehow, I think Carroll might end up back on the bench for the Ukraine game.

Re: Euro 2012

Tough call, not sure if he will start Rooney, could bring him on at half time. Def. leave out Milner and if we had another defender, Terry would go for me, on the second goal today he was marking fresh air. Just hope they come out to win and not sit back and hope to hang on to a draw.

Might be worthwhile giving Terry a rest and putting in Jones ... big, strong, young lad ... lots of pace and stamina. Not afraid to go forward either.

One hell of a header that Eric, but it was a shaky performance

I think its a racing cert he'll start with Rooney, he has too, we need to win and win good and hope the swedes get something against France, don't fancy England playing Spain in the last eight they're a good settled team and are very hard to beat

I agree with you, Terry was totally rubbish last night. He doesnt deserve to be there in my opinion, and he is un-fit.

I would like to see Roy starting with Carrol and Wellbeck on the next match to see how they go and then bring Rooney on at half time.
Carroll and Wellbeck both played well last night and Rooney needs to realise he is not the be all and end all of the English Team.

Where you watching the same game as me heth the only thing Welbeck did was score the goal, he kept losing it or giving it away, but agree about Terry, he nearly got caught out in the first half

Re: Euro 2012

At least Wellbeck chases the ball and try's a bit harder. He just needs to come out of his shell and believe he is as good as Carroll as he seemed to dominate. Not a bad thing but I would rather have 2 dangerous players up front rather than one.

Rooney just stands there and waits till the ball comes to his feet....................

Re: Euro 2012

I think Welbeck is a great player with lots of talent, he tries things other player don,t even think about like his goal yesterday, a back heal through his legs and off balance, brilliant. I think he oozes confidence and scares the heck out of the opposition. I def. agree about Jones for Terry.

Re: Euro 2012

Although Young hasn't played well I think it might work if they play Young, Welbeck and Rooney, certainly for the first half. After all they haven't played too badly together for La Creme and they obviously know each others style and movement.
Milner & Johnson scare me, they just seem to be the weakest area in both defence and attack - Jones and Walcott would be my preference

Well, well, well ! Break out the Ouzo, a round of Mythos for the Gentlemen & glasses of Retsina for the Ladies, then tuck into some gyros, bit of Soccer-aties anyone ? ............ If you've not twigged it's all about the Greeks ! :D

Well surprised, but actually quite pleased for them.

Re: Euro 2012

Tonight should serve as a warning to Hodgson & the boys.....take it too lightly on Tuesday and we'll be on the way home. I wonder if the Ruskies thought they were all but home and hosed and into the knock out phase before they played the Greeks !!!

It's gonna be tough Tuesday !! Win and maybe finish top.............or p****foot around and play for a draw / avoid getting beat and we might just end up with egg on our faces.:(

Though we're still not good enough to win it ???? Or maybe Hodgson should take a leaf out of the Mancini book of mindgames !!!;)

Re: Euro 2012

How does points system work?

Group A

Poland 2 draws 1 lose 2 goals
Greece 1 draw 1 lose 1 win 3 goals
Russia 1 draw 1 lose 1 win 5 goals
Czech R 1 lose 2 wins 4 goals

Ok so it's clear that Czech Rep go through. Then you have Russisa and Greece - so how come Russia don't go through when they got more goals and Greece do go through?

But I thought it was points gained from the over all performances. Not just if they won the last game?

Greece n Russia attained the same points 4 each, But Greece beat Russia. Goals for/against obviously aint a factor.;) makes no odds when they play each other, last match or first.

Yeh so what do you get points for then, obviously for a win you get points - how many! I take it you don't get points for more goals then as Russia had the highest amount.

So clarify this points system then? Cheers :D
