I know from my own recent experiences, these things were what made us laugh, they made us cry too...but really, they are a bit like a time machine.

You know how I like to compose bits of doggerel...this is one of the verses I wrote to express how we felt.

She left this life and closed the door.
She left us here, still wanting more.
One more smile, one more talk...
Another tale, another joke.
I'm feeling sad and so bereft,
For memories are all she left.
Memories do not wilt or fade,
They are the things her love has made.
Lovely verse, Margaret, brought on tears, thank you for sharing with us!

Can I share with you all a verse that I found, handwritten, tucked into Yvonne's will, presumably intending me to find, not her composition, presumably lifted from the internet:

When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile
Just forget if you can that I ever frowned
And remember only my smile
Forget unkind words I have spoken
Remember some good I have done
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun
Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way
Remember I've fought some hard battles
And won by the close of the day
Then forget to grieve for my going
I would not have you sad for a day
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay
And come in the evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best

Yvonne's sister (79yr old), was brave enough to recite this at her funeral.

So much for time travel!

Thanks for starting this thread, Margaret, hope remaining replies are not as downbeat!

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

Margaret, getting back to your original theme....

Apart from previously stated, if it were possible to teleport anywhere, if, in the future, I would love to be anywhere in Australia, always a dream, we traveled all over Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Florida, when Yvonne worked for Airtours, (staff discounts), but never quite managed the Antipodies!

As for the past, Sicily would be my choice, we had perhaps three holidays there, & still never saw enough of the island, such a fascinating place!
Then it became too expensive to go there!

However, being realistic, I would like to see Accrington, back in the mid sixties when I first came here as a raw 19yr old from Manchester, fascinated by the differences from the life I had known, become the vibrant town it was then... or is this just a pipedream?
We can but hope!

I can empathise with this, Margaret, I was executor for mother in laws will, & sis in law (who had lived in South Africa for 20+ yrs) would not believe how small her Mum's estate was! Made me think she thought I was cheating other relatives!

Ossy Kid, you are forgiven because that will be a momentous occasion.
There have to be some folk who would wish to see for themselves some of the great sporting moments...mine would be to see in person Roger Bannister and the four minute mile...I am not a bit sporty, but this was such an achievement back then.

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

Gerard, I love that you found the handwritten poem, and though it must have been painful for you to read, she was in effect telling you that life goes on, and each day you just put one foot in front of the other...and that is how it is.
Memories are painful at first, but as I said, these can be your life raft when sadness threatens to drown you.

I am sad that you never got to experience the antipodes.

I have had many many visits down under....and it is a diverse and fascinating place.

What's stopping you going now? Don't leave it on your bucket list, it has never been as cheap to fly there, there are many deals to be had....and you take Yvonne in your heart...so you would be showing her the sights.

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

Been giving this a lot of thought and there’s plenty of places I would like to teleport and/or time travel to, so it’s a bit hard to choose but country-wise I would love to do a flying visit to Tibet.

However, my frivolous answer to this thread would be to travel a little while into the future, get the winning numbers of the next Cross Lotto, come back to the present and put them on….then watch them being drawn and tick them all off my entry.

On a serious and emotional side I would like to go back some years to my hometown to tell my mum and dad once more how much I loved them and give them one more hug, and I’d like to have been there for them when I was needed (which I wasn’t).

On a frustrated side I would like to go back to 1663 and find out who the heck Roger Marsden’s father and mother were……

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

Dotti, you do not need to limit yourself.
You could go to as many places as you want...as often as you want....just tell me where and why.
I would be very hesitant about travelling to the future...and winning the lotto might mean that you would alter the future....and I think that is a bit of a risk...don't ask me why, it just makes me a tad uneasy.

I get why you would go back in time...and I would do the same, and for similar reasons...to tell my dad how much I love him, and to ask him questions.

I am sure he knew that I love him, but I would also tell him how much he influenced my life and how much I miss him now he is not here.

I am not sure if I would go back two months and stay with my mum during her last hours...because I think it was not what SHE wanted.
I think that event happened how it was meant to happen and however much I wish it could have been different, it was 'right'.

I would revisit some of the momentous moments though.
Getting my State Finals results through the post.
Going back and revisiting my wedding day....
Dancing with my father at an awards ceremony.
My silver wedding, getting a silver tea pot from my dad and me telling him it had been a long six months(that is all he gave our marriage).
Our first trip to Oz...because it was a long time in the planning, the saving for and it was something I never thought I would do.

So you don't have to stick at one thing Dorothy...tell us more...please.

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

my next choice is the summer of 1976, this was the year that the UK had the highest temperatures on record, it was really hot.
We decided to have two weeks doing bed and breakfast, heading for Devon and Cornwall, I wanted to see Land's End.
We stopped at St. Ives just for the day, know I hate walking too far, I would take the car for the toilet if I could, only joking...St. Ives is really steep, we walked up this street, I complained all the time, then stopped at a pub for something to eat and a drink, this pub was heaving, they were a lot of Irish folk all having a good time, we must have been in there about an hour, when all of a sudden there was a loud BANG, next thing women are screaming, hiding under the tables, it was only when this guy tried to shout over all the commotion to tell everyone, it was a signal for the LIFEBOAT. The Irish crowd thought it was a BOMB, I know I should'nt but I did laugh, one Irish guy was so happy to be alive he offered to buy everyone a drink...

Next was Hastings...We were late trying to find somewhere, knocked on this Victorian style house, it was coming in dark, an elderly women opened the door, she had spaces, spent the night there, it was fine. Next morning down for breakfast, it looked like we were the only one's there, she came across to tell us what the breakfast was, and that she had made all the jams and marmalade herself, quess what she had a dripping nose, no breakfast for Bea...Oh and by the way she was really nice.

Land's End was a total disappointment, but we did go shopping in Penzance, but this is another story

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

I also found Land's End a bit of a damp squib.
Mind you it was a wild winter day...I might have felt different about it if the sun had been shining.
Another place that I did not like was Dartmoor...where the prison is.
It felt ...well, the only way I can describe it is sinister.
Didn't much care for the Pavilion at Brighton either. It looked good from the outside, but was dark and oppressive inside...I could not wait to get out.

Overrated is the best way to describe Lands End i reckon. Think Brighton is as well.

I quite liked Brighton....but not the Pavilion.
Liked looking round The Lanes, but everything was very expensive.
I would have to wait for my ship to come in to shop there.
I love Canterbury and had some of the best ever fish and chips there....isn't it strange the connections you make when you think of places?

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

Wasn't impressed with Brighton either...but PENZANCE!!!

Don't remember that much about it, if my memory serves me right is was OK. we went shopping there, some of the shop's had a sale on, passed The Edinburgh Woolen Mill, we'll go in here...Ken, it only sells jumpers and coats, we don't need anything it's boiling outside...well I am going in, so he followed...Didn't take me long to find something...are you waiting for this...a SHEEPSKIN COAT...he thought I'd lost my mind.
I will never forget Penzance, I wore this coat ever winter for years and years, in fact his mother said "Is that the only coat she has"... I still have it up in the loft. Must see if I can find it

Re: If you could Teleport to anywhere....

For a place I have never been to - I would like to be plonked on Mount Everest (without the need to climb it of course) so that I could genuinely feel on top of the world. I would stick my little flag in that said ‘Dotti wuz here’.

For an event I would love to be able to do again – our 60th wedding anniversary in February of 2017. The most wonderful day full of sunshine and love shared with those nearest and dearest to us. This was just before everything went pear-shaped.

For an historical event – so many of these would be interesting to be at but I think being at Runnymede and watching King John sign the Magna Carta would give me a buzz.

I asked his nibs where he would like to be transported to if he had the chance and he said he would have loved to have gone walking with Alfred Wainwright. Failing this he wouldn’t mind a bit of a stroll with Julia Bradbury. Have a feeling the latter would appeal to him most….

He’d also like to have the day back when he climbed Ben Nevis as a young lad.

Oh, yes – and he’d like to have February 25th back again.
