I don't have a political bone in my body! I just know that petrol is so expensive in this country that lots of people, me included, can not use my car as often as I would like to because of the cost.
Green issues are a different issue, and I try not to use my car because of that too, but dont want to go off topic.

The duty remains the same,but as we pay VAT on duty in this country the VAT receipts will be less.
Seems we have to pay Tax on Duty

VAT is yes but the fuel duty is fixed at a price per litre. If the price goes up the Government get more in VAT but the same in fuel duty per litre

Fuel is one of the few things where tax is not a percentage of the cost. That's the point Neil & Benipete want to make.

Fuel duty is a fixed amount per litre. Of the rest, the manufacture is probably a fairly constant cost. The crude oil varies in price, but as that's a fairly small component of the pump price, variations in the price of crude do not have a like-for-like effect on the pump cost.

Then there's VAT on the lot, but there's VAT on pretty much everything.

Does anyone know the ratio between crude oil and petrol?

I.E. 1 Gall of crude = x Gall. of petrol. Seems to be a closely guarded secret along with all the other bi-products.

Filled up my car today and it was 91p a litre - few months ago it was £1.10 at least.
