That first piccy showing the Yorkshire Penny Bank was interesting.Opened my first bank account there at the age of nine...(56 yrs ago)I came home carrying a round thing with slots to save all my coins in (you never did know how much was in there till they opened it up) Sometimes you got a surprise...I was saving for a bike and it was taking a long time, but then I was promised a bike by Mum and Dad if I passed my 11 plus exam...which I did! Still got an old passbook with the amount of 4 pounds 10 shillings in it..a fortune in thse days....

Wow, just had a better look.

Eighty nine truly fasinating local photographs.

Really wish there was some accompanying text with them.

When did the train crash?

What's the massive thing on the back of those lorries?

What was the occasion that saw the massed throngs in Blackburn Road?

Who are those little urchins with the policeman?

Sadly there are no comments of explanation on the site...yet.

That was in Market St Church, train jumped track & crashed down onto Market St, not sure of date, early 1900's.

Page 3, 2nd row 1st left. August 2nd 1915 when the Pals marched from Blackburn into Accrington to take the salute from the mayor, you can see the Pals lined up across the end of Little Blackburn Rd & into Peel St.

I've got quite a few of those photo's in my collection, I think the project is being done by Lancashire Libraries, & those shown have come from Accrington Library.
The water fountain is very much like the one in Oak Hill Park.

Just checked my photo's & the train crash is quoted as being in Lonsdale St, a driverless train ran free from Baxenden, crashed through the buffers, and carrie on towards Church, the picture I have is from a different angle dated 1899.

Hi,
What a fantastic collection of highly evocative images!

By any chance within the archive is there a photograph showing John Blake's engineering works on Oxford Street? Alternatively, a map circa 1870 to 1900 showing Blake's Oxford street works. If yes, can you please send me details.

The information is required for the completion of a magazine article I have almost finished writing featuring the history of one of Accrington's most famous engineers: JOHN BLAKE, makers of HYDRAMS.

HAPPY STEAMINGS.

Could anyone possibly speculate on why a picture of 'The Old Curiosity Shop' is in there (page 4 of the collection)? Last time I looked, this building was located behind the London School of Economics, by Lincolns Inn Fields, some 230 miles south of Accy.

Is there a connection between Dickens, the OCS and Accy? If so what is it?

Has anyone spotted any other pictures in there which are not exactly Accy (excluding Church, Ossy, etc)?

PS...I'm referring to Accrington/Historic Lancashire

The picture's probably been picked up from here, Mr T.

treasure: Treasure trove discovered in an old curiosity shop

Somebody's put the wrong pic on this story which was about the shop up Burnley Road that had been untouched by the hand of time for around 40 years until the builders came to redevelop it.

There are one or two discrepencies.

There's one photograph taken from the end of Nab Lane, Stanhill, which states it's were the Spinning Jenny was invented.

As well as featuring in the Accrington section, it's also on the Blackburn one.

I was confused about the Old Curiosity Shop too.

Thanks Retlaw, for answering my questions.

Picture 49. It's a ships propellor, quite a large one. Cast in phosphor bronze, machined and polished.I don't remember anywhere in Accrington which could cast and machine one of those. The two wagons,Atkinson and Leyland, are from the 60's.
Perhaps Retlaw can tell us?
Brings back memories(not of the first tram!). Thanks, Garinda.

The names on the wagons look like 'Jon(?) Walsh' and 'James Lynch'. Were they local hauliers?
The propellor may not have been made locally.

That ships propellor was never cast in Accrington, only two foundries big enough to cast something so big were Bulloughs & Lang Bridges, neither of them did bronze castings, unusual pitch & number of blades.
Pic 24 is the Ambulance Drill Hall on Bull Bridge.
Pic 37 is the Wesleyan Chapel from Nuttall St.
Pic 65 is the Acc Pals led by Lt/Co Rickman, taking the salute from the mayor of Acc 2 -8-1915.
A lot of those pictures have nowt to do with Accrington.

Someone discussing the same photograph on another forum...

Gilbraith Haulage of Accrington bought out a company called Garston (either Haulage or Wharfage) in the 60's and they used to transport props. I remember seeing one in the yard at Accrington when the driver had come in for a service and the prop which looked about the size of the one in you pic was still on the trailer.. The unit was a red Leyland with the LAD cab with the deep doors. The trailer had a frame on so the prop could be tilted somehow. I wonder if it springs to your mind,, The driver looked a bit like Mick McMannus the old wrestler off TV.

The thing that crossed my mind was the theory that Maximillian Parker (born in Burnley, lived in Accy, father of Butch Cassidy) was a distant cousin of Charles Dickens and according to some was the model for Oliver Twist. It's pretty far fetched, I know because Dickens wrote Twist in the 1830's (OCS in the early 1840's) and it is unlikely that he met Parker until his visit to Preston (where Parker then lived, prior to emigrating to the USA) in the mid 1850's.

Still, you never know - maybe Oliver Twist was really an Accy lad.

If so, who was Fagin? Probably an ancestor of Jaysay.

Was the propellor for the Birkenhead shipyards? If so, perhaps not an Accrington photo

Don't know when it ever got used, although sirens went off many times, we never had any air raids on Accy, never even used the air raid shelter either, which they built in Brigg's Yard, just used it to store bonfire wood.
As food was rationed at the time, where would they have got the food from, where would they have stored it, in the event it was ever needed.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album

I have just spent a happy hour on this thread following the discussion about the numbering of the Slaters Arms on Whalley Road.

I am not going to contribute to that argument but just wanted to say that if you look at the photo of the opening of Broadway in post 64, which I believe took place in 1936, the buildings in the background, between Cobden Street and Whalley Road, were still there then. You can clearly see the Slaters Arms on the far corner, compare it with photo in post 13 and you will see the chimney stack on the roof and the boarding on the edge of the roof going up to the corner. You can also see the lamp post/traffic light pole on the corner.

This ties in with a previous post where the poster, can't remember who, said they thought the building was still there in 1937 but gone by 38.

I am saddened to say that John Kelly passed away this week after a long illness.
He was very proud of his photograph collection, not all his own work, Retlaw and Owd Bert amongst others contributed but it gave him great joy in his latter years knowing that the photo's that he had put together were being enjoyed by so many people around the world thanks to the internet and Accyweb. A good turnout at the crematorium this afternoon, the place was full, lots of firemen I hadn't seen in years,
not many left now of those who joined the brigade in the 1950's when John and I did.

I see no reason why not, Davoc. It would be expected that you state where you found the map.

Tried to open folder to see pictures but unfortunately getting internal error each time. Hope you can manage to sort this out as I have found photos I can view very interesting. Please keep up the good work I am new to this site and only found it by accident. I was brought up in Accy in the 1950s in Plantation Street. went to St Pauls School(Benjamin Hargreaves) then Woodnook. My Dad worked at Howard and Bulloughs and his grandparents lived in Cobden St from 1904 until their deaths in the 1940s.

Probably just a year or so ahead of you at St Paul's - left there for spring Hill in '49. We lived in the shop on Washington St, which my cousin took over - Essie's.
My father also worked at H & B, at that time I am sure he was foreman in the Ring Room before moving to the Tool Room where he became supervisor - Joe Yates.
People I can remember from around there are Barbara and Chris Firth, Kenny Entwhistle & a few other faces but no more names.

Hi Taddy, A little bit vague I,m afraid but i think it was 1960 to about 1964. We moved out of area then so I don't remember a lot. I do remember I had a crush on a boy called David Hartley in my class at Woodnook, and my best friend was called Linda but I don't remember the surname.

I met Barbara a couple of years back - we have both changed considerably from those days of old '47 - '49. Life was so simple for children in those days, most of the time, but I still have happy memories.
