Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
Checking my records, it shows there was a Slaters Inn on Plantation St, but that was back in 1869, the owner was refuse a licence renewal, well known poacher and gambler. So that rules out Plantation St as the location for the pub in the Picture.

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
I am puting my money on Whalley Rd at junction of Broadway. I think it was knocked down to accomodate Broadway, probably in 1936/7 when this was opned as a new road. For many years the land there was left as a garden. The Hope & Anchor pub was just a few doors away, and the Broadway Hotel, formerly Peel Arms was across the road. I suspect that the traffic lights were put in just before the pub was knocked down.Broadway was previously called Marquis St after a local businessman/landowner
I think Atarah is right - the pub comes into the story of 'Bronco Bill' (Bill Hodson)who fought behind it with Joe Hurley, knocking him to the ground and getting charged with murder. Bill had suspected Joe of knocking his wife off. He got sent down for life but was released on licence after saving the life of a prison warder. Manslaughter yes, murder probably not in my view. |

Agree not Bank Street now .. yes, did have doubts about Porters ... Retlaw has added a comment to the 'photo about chimney pots. Had already noticed this from old pictures of Bank Street. This section of Bank Street had 3 chimney pots not 2 ... you started the confusion Retlaw, ya' monkey.. :p
Looks like what Bob and Atarah said then. :D Shame, can't just read those street signs. Enjoyed the debate though. |

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
All this argy bargy about where the Slaters Arms was proves a point,
not many of you know much about the history of Accrington in by gone days. Just to put you all out of your misery, you wont find it on any modern photo, or on the spurious web sites on goggle, its been long gone. The Slaters Arms was at 21 Whalley Rd, in 1869 the landlord was William Wilkinson. Retlaw |
Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
This is true, Retlaw, lots of us have small knowledge of the history of our Borough, but it is threads like this that have stirred our interest and asked questions and not been afraid to come up with the incorrect answers.
Accyweb,Atarah/Bob and yourself has given me a new insight and wanting to know more. So don't criticise us please for our shortcoming, encourage us.. :) Busman ... next please. |

To be honest, in retrospect, do owe you a slight apology. You have done your best to encourage our members to take an interest in local history through your little puzzles, etc .. even though I went nearly bald trying to solve them .... :D |
Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
know very little about the history of accy, mainly due i suppose to not having any interest when younger, or time, love it now n am fascinated by much of the stuff posted on here. suppose thats cos i'm old knackered n got time.:D

Thanks for info on the Slaters Arms. Next question, where about does Whalley road start?
Does it start at the top of the bus station road or opposite the Broadway. I may be able to work out where the pub was if I knew the answer. I don't intend making a trip into Accrington just to find out when we have such knowledgeable members of the forum to help me out. |

Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album
The photo most recently shown is of what is now Age Concern, but in former years was the Electricity Board shop, at the bottom of Burnley Rd. before there was a building here, it was the site of a communal well/water tap. In the photo it appears to be owned by the Corporation Electricity Department. The Gas & Water Board was at the bottom of St James Street between the Yorkshire Bank & Willow St.

That's a lovely piccy of the demolition of Nuttall St. In particular, take note of the workmen in their Hi-Vis jackets, hard hats and the elaborate scaffolding erected to provide full safety as they remove the slates from the roof.
What a shame we don't see 'owt like that today. |

To help folk "get their bearings" look at the 2nd photo on posting 179, page 12. If you cast your eyes over the rooftop of Spring Mill, to the right you will see the roof with "James Walmsley" written on it. This of course became Mastabar, then Karrimor's and is now some sort of office premises.
