Accrington should have a museum
Me thinks its time to start a thread going on this subject.
More and more folk are now being asked if they feel we should have a museum in Accrington. OF COURSE WE SHOULD, we have to show our kids how this town came about! We need somewhere to record about our Accrington Pals, our famous football team, our industries that produced goods which went world wide i.e. NORI bricks, Ewbank sweepers, E.J.Riley snooker tables etc. We should have photos showing the men who left their mark in this town! The more folk talk about it, the more chance we may have. An article has been printed in the new free magazine, "ACORN COMMUNITY NEWS", the 2nd edition of which should be popping through doors now in the Hyndburn area. Please take a moment to read it. |

Groove thinks this is an excellent idea Atarah...but he thinks we may struggle in the current economic climate.

Re: Accrington should have a museum
Totally behind you Atarah, as you know.
It's a disgrace a town such as Accrington hasn't it's own museuem, to record and display it's proud, and important heritage. If you succeed in making this happen you deserve a brass plaque with your name on it, acknowledging your fight to make it a reality. |

The 'B.M.E.' centre on Hannah St. has just secured £36,000.00 worth of council funding. |

Re: Accrington should have a museum
I think everyone would be in support of a Local History Museum. How to go about getting it is the problem. Using a small space within the Town Hall or Haworth to exhibit (as has been discussed previously on here) just wouldn't be large enough imo. But at the same time, finding finance for any sole purpose building would be a challenge to put it mildly.
I've no experience in this sort of thing, but getting some local councillors on board, someone to spearhead the campaign, and applying for lottery funding seems to be the way these things work. |
Re: Accrington should have a museum
Groove thinks you only have to look at the number of empty/redundant premises in Accrington so finding a suitable location should'nt be a problem...He also thinks that a museum would be somewhat a visitor atraction and would entice more people to visit the town in a tourist capacity...Groove thinks this matter should be brought up to the council/powers that be etc and could eben put Accrington on the map as in Ossy mills. Groove would support this idea wholeheartedly and commends Atarah for her logical, forward thinking.

Re: Accrington should have a museum
Well Accrington does have one of sorts, Haworth Art Gallery, which indeed is well known for its collection of Tiffany Glass, if there are people who haven't made a visit to this fine place, I can recommend it

Re: Accrington should have a museum
If money was no object this might have done the trick. Obviously a pipe dream.
Does anyone have any input on how the idea (in general, not my above diversion) could feasibly move forward? Should we bombard HBC with emails? Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? |
