I read it over 30 years ago, it was the first book by Spike I ever read and it was hilarious. I love his wartime memoirs but there's that touch of the "dark" side of him there, as well as the humour. Norma Farnes' book shows him as a very complex, often difficult man, a genius with dreadful mental problems but you can tell she loved him to bits. |

One of the few fiction writers I read (I prefer biography and history), I adore Terry Pratchett. I think there are just 3 Discworld books I haven't got (the 3 latest). The last one I read was The Last Hero and I can't decide who I'm most a fan of - Cohen the Barbarian (who I see as an aged Kirk Douglas) or Leonard da Quirm. :D |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I have never read any of those because I thought he was that comedy writer that was popular about 20 years ago, mainly read by men. Is it the same man?
Sorry to be so vague, im hoping this rings some bells and somebody will come up with the name of the writer I mean if its not Terry Pratchett. Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I am reading "It Had To Be You! by Sarah Webb at the moment, it is one I picked up in a charity shop. It is a light hearted read, not bad but far from the best one I have read. Love reading like a lot on here.

Just finished Acid Row - Minnette Waters and have just started Wicked - Jilly Cooper, haven't read her books before as I prefer crime but will give it a go.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I've always got a book on the go. My favourite fiction writer is Lesley Pearse.
I also like true crime books and autobiographies. Can't be doing with biographies as they are just full of stories from the papers, not necessarily true and not necessarily authorised by the person they're about. I enjoyed Ugly by Contance Briscoe, A piece of cake by Cupcake Brown and books by Jenny Tomlin. It's good to see what people can achieve despite such a rough start in life.....however, I've had my fill of what I call misery memoirs now. There are far too many of them. Every second book you pull of the shelves is about some poor beggar having to eat out of the dog's bowl and sleep in the cutlery drawer. :( |

its spooky being related to someone who likes the same things as i do lol, i've read ugly too, havent read her latest one yet though, i also read Jenny Tomlins first book, couldnt get into the second, the one she did with her sister, it was like she was repeating everything she said in the first has anyone got 'beyond ugly'? Constance Briscoe's second book? i could do with borrowing it, that and Katie Price's 3rd biography |
