Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Once again i'm not sure if there is already a thread about this but i'm sure the mods will move it for me if there is.
I love a good read and have loads of books of all types. I wondered what everybody was reading at the moment? Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
i love books that are true, i HATE fiction
i love reading about the Kray Twins, Murder, true crime and criminal psychology are my thing, trying to get into other peoples minds to see what makes them tick has always enthrolled me |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
"Spike", a look at the real Spike Milligan by his secretary/manager, Norma Farnes.
|
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Good thread and one I was thinking about creating a few days ago.
I read quite a lot and have always enjoyed it, ever since I was a little lad. However, I was looking at a list of the top 100 books of all time and I realised that I'd only read 21 of the books on the list!! Now I know these lists are flawed and this one wasn't really up to much, but it made me want to read a few more 'classics', so that's what I've been doing over the last couple of weeks. I've recently just finished reading The Great Gatsby , which I really enjoyed and I have been reading Frankenstein for the last couple of nights. So far, so good. :) |

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
For some strange reason I fell out with reading not read since last Autumn. Have probably 20 or so books waiting to be read various authors (donated by me neighbour) Into Stephen King myself, most recent read of his was The Drawing of the Three. Second book in his Dark Tower Series, liked it so bought the rest of the series on Accy market, not read them tho.
Last book I actually read was by Dean Koontz, By The Light of the Moon…..I really have to start reading again, maybe when winter starts to kick in. |

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Some good reads there, even the Enid Blighton lol.
I have to say though, that for some reason I dont like Stephen Kings style. I have read the Lisey's Story one, but when it first came out and cant for the life of me remember much about it. Ive got quite a few of his books but I have given up on them now and don't think i will bother reading any more by him. Even though he is so popular and I know he spins a really good story but its his style that bugs me a little. Have you got many of his Margaret? I am of the same bent as Flashy, I like the true crime and psychology books and have quite a few myself. I had compiled some lists with a view to selling some of my books, but when it came to the crunch, i couldnt part with them. Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
Second time I've read it and I'm just working myself through the whole set again. The first time I read them all I read them in the wrong order (4, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7) with a huge gap in between 5, 6 and 7. So thought I'd read them so that they made sense as a set. My daughter is reading the second Harry Potter book for the fifth time! She gets to the end of the seventh and then starts all over again. I've just taken part in a book ring. Quite a good idea - my friend sent me the instructions and I had to send them on to six more people along with a list with just two addresses on, my friends and mine. I had to send one book to the person who sent the instructions to my friend. The people who I sent it to had to send one book to my friend and then they had to send the instructions on with my name and just their names on the list. In theory, for the price of one book I should get 36 in return. I'll let you know how it works out. |

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I agree totally there Margaret, Dean Koontz to Stephen King any day.
I have to admit that I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books, probably because I dont have young children. I read Philip Pullman's though. Very good they are too, very imaginative but there was some controversy about them being a bit too subliminally religious. Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Have noticed that King uses the same phrases in many books, to describe sommat, or empasise a situation. It aint plagiarism, heck it’s his own work, smacks of laziness tho.
I only read the one Koontz as mentioned earlier, got a new one last Christmas that is still unopened - The Darkest Evening of the Year. Will give that a shot for my next read. |

|
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I always read about three or four books at once. At the moment I'm reading The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Also breezing through a collection of poems in English by Joseph Brodsky.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I read ´Spike´ a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it is so hard to come by new books here in Tenerife and we have to rely on the book swaps in the local bars. I can´t remember the last time that I had a brand new book all to myself.
I´m not really moaning as it´s better than nothing but the choice is limited and you tend to pick one up that looks good only to find that you read it last year. On my list of things I miss..........Tesco.com, Marksies and W H Smith!! Almost forgot steak pud all in! |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
You should read Puckoon by Spike Milligan.
Very funny. |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Johnathon Kellerrman ..THERAPY..

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I had to do a search for that one!! lol, So is it a psychological thriller based on detective work? Is it any good?
Where does everybody get their books from? Ebay, Waterstones, Market? Ordinary Book shops, Swaps????? Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
God I read anything and everything! Thriller, horrors, biographies, chcklit, anything that I can get my head into.
Flashy, if you like the bios, try Lenny Mcleans 'The Guvnor', and Roy "Pretty Boy" Shaw (cant remember the title of his). Another great biography is Gordon Ramseys. I have nothing but admiration sice reading that one. Thrillers, Jeffrey Deaver is amazing. The twists in his books are untrue, but all make sense in the end. Kinda like Murder she wrote but with a point! lol Chicklit, Fiona Walker is so far my fave. Only read one duff one out of all of hers. 'Kiss Chase' is a great one to start with. My God, I am a closet nerd. I have to read eveynight before I go to sleep. Winds me down, but once i get into a good book, I find it hard to put it down, to the point where I get crammed if i get disturbed lol. I always say i Never have time to watch a dvd, but give me a book and i'm happy as! My dad actually gave me the Chris Moyles autobiography and Gordon Ramseys book 2 days before my brithday last year. Read them both before it was actually my birthday tho lol |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Its not hard to spot that your a proper addict!! lol.
It seems there are a lot of us on here who love to read. I'm really enjoying the thread and looking up the books everybody is mentioning, so keep it going please. Bonnyx |

Talking of The Idiot, did you see last week's Culture Show? Mark Kermode interviewed the controversial theatre director Katie Mitchell, whose new play 'Some Trace of Her' is based around the Dostoyevsky tale. The production is a combination of filmed footage and live action on the stage. A really interesting idea and something I'd actually like to see. |

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

At the minute im reading true life books though, im reading Unbeaten, is from Kim something( cant spell it), the woman from How Clean Is Your House?, really good book, bought it on saturday and is nearly finish, im also reading at Cupcake wich is another book about true storie life. |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
It's great to see so many people enjoying reading, especially when we're constantly being told that we only watch TV and play console games nowadays.
If this is a snapshot of the people of Accrington and surrounding areas, then the interest is definitely there and I'm surprised that there isn't any kind of proper 'book club' in the area. I asked about this a couple of years ago, but there was nothing around at the time. I know they have something of the kind at Blackburn library, but they tend to be during the day times. I have a few friends who live in Lancaster and a couple of them attend book clubs and really enjoy reading and discussing the latest read. I know Lancaster has a different demographic to Hyndburn, but it still surprises me that an area of the size doesn't have such a group/s. |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
The Skull Mantra by Eliot Pattison......a headless corpse, a disgraced investigator and a conspiracy of silence.
Sophie's World by Jostein Gaardner.......I have read this before and I am re-reading it. It isn't a relaxing read as it poses some challenging philosophical questions....definitely not bedtime reading...unless you want to stay awake all night untangling the philosophical questions. |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
For people on limited incomes who may be reluctant to spend money on books, I have found that the Lancashire library service is doing a good job
TalisPrism It does not provide for people in Blackburn with Darwen, but for the rest of us - -you can search for a book by title and/or author and see which branch libraries have it on the shelf, and if out on loan, see when it is due back. - you can reserve a book and get it moved to your local branch for collection - you can renew it twice on line |

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I read it over 30 years ago, it was the first book by Spike I ever read and it was hilarious. I love his wartime memoirs but there's that touch of the "dark" side of him there, as well as the humour. Norma Farnes' book shows him as a very complex, often difficult man, a genius with dreadful mental problems but you can tell she loved him to bits. |

One of the few fiction writers I read (I prefer biography and history), I adore Terry Pratchett. I think there are just 3 Discworld books I haven't got (the 3 latest). The last one I read was The Last Hero and I can't decide who I'm most a fan of - Cohen the Barbarian (who I see as an aged Kirk Douglas) or Leonard da Quirm. :D |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I have never read any of those because I thought he was that comedy writer that was popular about 20 years ago, mainly read by men. Is it the same man?
Sorry to be so vague, im hoping this rings some bells and somebody will come up with the name of the writer I mean if its not Terry Pratchett. Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I am reading "It Had To Be You! by Sarah Webb at the moment, it is one I picked up in a charity shop. It is a light hearted read, not bad but far from the best one I have read. Love reading like a lot on here.
|
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Just finished Acid Row - Minnette Waters and have just started Wicked - Jilly Cooper, haven't read her books before as I prefer crime but will give it a go.
|
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
I've always got a book on the go. My favourite fiction writer is Lesley Pearse.
I also like true crime books and autobiographies. Can't be doing with biographies as they are just full of stories from the papers, not necessarily true and not necessarily authorised by the person they're about. I enjoyed Ugly by Contance Briscoe, A piece of cake by Cupcake Brown and books by Jenny Tomlin. It's good to see what people can achieve despite such a rough start in life.....however, I've had my fill of what I call misery memoirs now. There are far too many of them. Every second book you pull of the shelves is about some poor beggar having to eat out of the dog's bowl and sleep in the cutlery drawer. :( |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

its spooky being related to someone who likes the same things as i do lol, i've read ugly too, havent read her latest one yet though, i also read Jenny Tomlins first book, couldnt get into the second, the one she did with her sister, it was like she was repeating everything she said in the first has anyone got 'beyond ugly'? Constance Briscoe's second book? i could do with borrowing it, that and Katie Price's 3rd biography |

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
Quote:
Terry Pratchett is still writing, though he apparently has an early form of Alzheimer's disease. I don't know if you would class him as a comedy writer, though his books are very humourous. His books aren't directed at men, either, and he has quite a lot of female central characters, such as Susan (the tooth fairy who is Death's adoptive grand daughter) and the very young (about 11) Tiffany Aching who is involved with the Pictsies (6" tall blue-skinned [tattooed] Scotsmen with red hair and a penchant for booze). I don't know who the writer is you're referring to. Not someone I've read. :o |

Rereading Emile Zola's Germinal, part of the Rougon-Macquart series of books he wrote. This one was set in northern France, amongst the harsh mining communities of the area, in the 1860's. A tale of poverty and struggle, not unlike the lives of the mill workers of Lancashire.
I was eighteen when I read them all, and they are still an inspiration, and shape my politics today. Up the workers!:D |

I get mine from Charity shops, supermarkets, the market and when I take my dog Wizzy to the seaside in Craster I usually go to all the second hand books shops round there. I don't go to the Library anymore because I often forget to take them back on time and end up feeling bad and having to pay a fine. Bonny x |
Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
ASDA's having a sale on some books, ive bought me and Ty some new ones but noticed that theres mostly books about abuse out at the moment, is this what people want to read? Ive read Dave Pelzers but i dont think i could cope with much more? There was also a few about arranged marriages. Not exactly the kind of books you wanna curl up with a brew and a bar of chocolate are they?

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?
i've just been t'Tesco and bought 'My Booky Wook' by Russell Brand, read the first couple of chapters already, what a great book it is so far, i've always liked him anyway, i think he is intelectually hilarious...the book starts off with him being admitted into the keystone sexual addiction treatment centre in Philadelphia...a great read so far, would recommend it to anyone who likes him
