I struck lucky today, as I also bought The Road to Nab End by William Woodruff, about growing up in poverty in Blackburn, in the 1920's.

£1.20 well spent, and both books look like new.:)

Douglas Haig: War Diaries and Letters, 1914-1918. Edited by Gary Sheffield (who, by the way, wrote a challenging book on the Somme) and John Bourne. The editing is a little biased in Haig's favour; not surprising given that Sheffield edited it. Oh ... and it has pictures, but non of them pop up.;)

shocking story.

Just read a book based round the village where my Mum grew up. It is called "An Irish Country Childhood" and though it wouldn't appeal to a lot of people I really enjoyed it as it gave me some insight into Mums early years:) Oh it is written by Marrie Walsh and funnily enough Mums maiden name was Walsh:)

What do you think of it, Flashy?

I didn't rate it compared to Ugly.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

just finished it tonight H, only took me just over a day to read it, there wasnt as much depth to it compared with 'ugly' i thought there would have been more reference to her mother than there was, aparently her mother tried to sue Constance for 'bad mouthing' her in the first book, i dont know how that went on, i thought the ending to the book was a bit dismal and rather quick, other than that i thought it was a decent book :D

now i need another decent book to read :D

I have always been an avid reader and love books with a historical content where fictional characters are woven into fact. Alexander Kent's naval series staged in Napoleonic times featuring the fictional 'Richard Bolitho' a Cornishman who rises from a teenage midshipman to his death with the rank of Admiral over 23 books. The series is currently continuing with Richards's son 'Adam Bolitho' and I consider these books equal, if not superior to anything written by CS Forester or Patrick O Brien.

Love the Bolitho novels .... the kind of books you can read over and over, like Asimov's Foundation trilogy, but O Brien has to be the best of the three .... but that's only my humble colonial opinion;)

Started reading the first chapter of The Railway Detective by Edward Marston which someone had left on the park and ride bus in Southport. Enjoyed it so much that I bought my own copy (having handed my find to the driver) and found it hard to put down. Just finished two theatrical biographies, that I got as Christmas presents.

Biggins, absolute rubbish. Numerous mistakes and inconstancies. Feel it was rushed out to cash on winning I'm a Celebrity.

Paul O'Grady's At My Mother's Knee, brilliant. Warm, funny, packed with background charcaters. It ends on a cliffhanger, his mother's heart attack, his father's death from a heart attack brought on by his wife's, and his on/off girlfriend announcing she was pregnant. Quite a day.

Really hope and look forward to reading the next installment.

It's a fascinating read: Love the bits about Schrodinger's cat ... But it is a book one may have to read with google at hand ... I think google, or whatever one uses, is a great boon to those who find footnotes and cross refs. confusing and irritatingly sparse. Isacc Azimov's "Atom: A Journey accross the Sub-Atomic Cosmos" is also a great read for those who have some interest in the history of atomic theory, and some hints on where it might lead.

Other best selling books which I never managed to finish were "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintanence" and "Catch 22"  :D

What about "War and Peace" and "Paradise Lost":D

I'm currently reading...

Of Mice and Men - Steinbeck,
The Sorrows of Young Werther - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
The economic naturalist - Why economics explains everything - Robert H Frank
The Myth of Sisyphus - Albert Camus
Oilopoly - Marshall Goldman

And a huge pile of various law and philosophy books which cause me no end of pain (in some cases actual physical pain, they can get heavy!)

If you are into fantasy books I can heartily recommend the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara are thoroughly absorbing reads that have been around for some time. Terry Brooks also wrote a prequel to the series entitled The Scions of Shannara. Well worth a look if you haven't already encountered them. They have often been compared with Tolkiens Lord of The Rings, but I found them better and uncomplicated to read

Happy reading . . . Stumped.

Lord of the Rings bored me half to death when I started reading it and I just had to stop.

I find the ending so utterly disappointing. I keep picking up Needful Things, getting a third of the way through and then forgetting about it for months and having to start again. I will eventually read it from cover to cover and then I will finally know how it ends. I saw the film was on telly once and refused to watch it because I don't want to know the plot.

Tempting though.

I never seem to get through books cover to cover any more.

I've been reading Sarah Kane's Complete Plays recently. Not for the faint-hearted.

Just finished Bernard Corwells's 'Azincourt' (Agincourt). What a cracking read. The battle scenes are verging on the horrific, but nonetheless riveting. My rating: 10/10 both for characterisation and content.

Well I got a bit of a shock last week, Iwas looking through this second hand book shop and came across a book of the history of the Archers, by William Smethurst, I say shock because its never been broadcast over here, so I snapped it up.
