"Child 44": Tom Rob Smith. A fascinating look at the Soviet Union around the time of the death of Stalin. Already bought the sort of sequel: "The Secret Speech."

I Am What I Am by John Barrowman

The second autobiography from Barrowman and, as is to be expected from such a comparatively young man, it is thinner on content than the preceding Anything Goes. It probably won't appeal to anyone who has little interest in television production and the incessant innuendo-laden footnotes grate after a very short while but I picked this up for £2 from The Works and can't grumble at that.

Love Songs For The Shy & Cynical by Rob Shearman

A collection of short fantasy love stories from the notable writer although I was left with the nagging feeling that several of them started out as good ideas in his head and then he had absolutely no idea how to finish them off because a few of the endings are very unsatisfying.

The stories themselves range from the intriguing to the downright bizarre (although not being a fantasy reader I suppose that needs some leap of understanding on my part) but the hidden story discovered by accident on the reverse of the dustjacket was a nice touch.

Just finished reading Michael McIntyre's autobiography, well worth a read, had me in stitches for the whole book, if anyone wants to borrow the book just give me a shout

also just read Paul O'Grady's second autobiography, it is funny but nowhere near as good as his first, i have both his books so again if anyone wants to borrow them, give me a shout

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I am reading The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger not the easiest of reads, and I have all but given it up a couple of times....but I am intrigued by the fact that it was in the best sellers list for ages.
The story is a bit surreal(maybe metaphysical would be a better description) is hard to follow because it seems to jump backwards and forwards. I sometimes think that I am perhaps getting too old to waste time(if any reading can be called a waste of time?)reading something that isn't enjoyable.......and yet I can't just leave it!

I had the same trouble with Sophies World by Jostein Gaardner........I persevered with it, and can't really say I enjoyed it....but I have kept it because I might just have another go at reading it again....see if a second read makes it make more sense.

Agree about Paul O'Grady's book not being as laugh out loud as his first.

Looking forward to the next one, as that's when I knew him. When Lily really took off on the pub scene.

Hopefully he won't menton a dodgy club over MacDonald's in Balham, when he went for a tinkle, and a big skinhead asked him to pee in his welly!

Or the time he came to our party in Streatham, and...

Whoops.

Don't want to spoil it.

Just about to read Amistead Maupin's new Tales of the City book, which I've saved until now.

I have finished The Time Traveller's Wife very poignant and thought provoking.
I have also just finished Angela Huth's Land Girls and Philippa Gregory's The Little House.
Thoroughly enjoyed Land Girls...it is about the Women's Land Army during the war.
A good read but I finished it very quickly.

So pleased I saved Armistead Maupin's latest Tales of the City book, Mary Ann in Autumn, for six months.

An absolute joy.

I limited myself to a chapter a day on the beach. Otherwise I'd have devoured it all in a couple of hours.

Struggling to finish "Persuasion" - my New year's resolution was to read more classical literature starting with Austen. Thought it would be easier than the usual attempt at a diet -not so!! After that just Emma and Northanger Abbey and i will have re-read all six. Have just finished watching a DVD of Lost in Austen which was quite funny. After that I have the book "One Day" lined up which my cousin and her husband recommended recently -any thoughts? Another friend told me it's a bit "obvious" and lined up to make another "Rom-com" film -probably with Hugh Grant...
Another friend recommends a "Kindle" but they seem a bit expensive -the major problem with penguin Classics is the size of the print - a bit small for us who have poor eye-sight (that's my excuse for being slow!) .

On a kindle you can change the size of the font.
I got mine off E-bay....it was a real bargain. I was sceptical about a kindle at first, but they are good. Many of the classics you can download at no cost too
I still read conventional paperbacks as well.

Just finished "When God was a Rabbit" by Sarah Winman.

Very good book, had me laughing and crying. Its her first book and I saw it on play.com for £3 so thought I would try it for that price.
Will be looking out for any other books that she might bring out.

Anyone who wants to borrow it is more than welcome, it is readable in a couple of days though!

Two years ago I gave hundreds of books to charity, not only in support of mum who had a stroke, but also because the room I kept them in was beginning to smell like a musty old bookshop! Because I am an avid reader, I am seriously thinking of getting a Kindle. I have read a separate thread on here about the Kindle, and it would seem they get a huge thumbs up.

Description -

Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents and a best friend who smells of chips; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, one bright morning and a single, earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever. Spanning four decades and moving between suburban Essex, the wild coast of Cornwall and the streets of New York, this is a story about childhood, eccentricity, the darker side of love and sex, the pull and power of family ties, loss and life. More than anything, it's a story about love in all its forms.

I have to say I was the biggest sceptic going on these e-readers......but I am converted. I take my Kindle with me on the bus, it is slim, light and slips easily into my handbag.
I can alter the font size to something that suits me......it is readable even in the brightest sunlight...even better than a book because you don't get the glare from a white page.
Best of all I can read it in bed at night....because it doesn't make my reading arm go to sleep.

The Elephant To Hollywood by Michael Caine.

Another well-written autobiography which paints an interesting picture of Hollywood life during the twentieth century. It is surprising how many truly famous people Michael Caine has come into contact with over the years although the opening chapter presumes a level of foreknowledge about him which makes you feel as if you've missed something really obvious that everyone else knows.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

So..being back in Church for the long weekend I grabbed a little light reading from Lancashire's library service (albeit being nominally resident in the Capital, I have still maintained my membership of LCC's library services).

The first book I picked up and the one I opened last night was one from the crime section, by the American legal eagle John Grisham; the book spine has been clearly marked by the library with a small Colt 45 pistol insignia, indicating that this is of the adult crime genre. The title of the piece? Theodore Boone.

Last night - two pages into the book (it would have been less had it not been for a nice bottle of claret & a half bottle of port) I realised that this was anything but adult crime fiction. It was, in fact, a kiddies book which just happened to be written by Mr Grisham.

Now, I do not know which is worse. Is it a good crime writer such as Grisham trying to play a variation on Harry Pottert & Hogwarts in Strattenburg, good 'ol USA or is it some idiot at the Lancashire library service not knowing any better and just passing this off as a grown-up crime fiction? Whichever, I do know that I would never have had this experiance when Church library was open.

There's some hell of conspiracy theories in the world of fiction Margaret, thought that would have been your cup of tea with plenty of sugar:rolleyes:

Conspiracy derived from facts is more complex than conspiracy fiction, although some fiction has its basic story line in facts.

I've just finished reading 'the woman he loved before' by Dorothy Koomson, a riveting read, I couldn't put it down and it's really got into my head, I recommend it to everyone. It's basically about a woman who marries a man whose last wife died in a tragic accident, but there's much more to it than that. I've haven't read any of her books previously, but I'm planning to get 'The ice cream girls' and looking forward to reading that too. She's a very talented author in my opinion.

Yes Bernard, I am. I know I was a bit dubious about getting one(well, no......a lot dubious) but it has been worth every penny.
Especially for books like the CJ Sansom ones....they are in excess of 500 pages long in paperback.......a bit wieghty for reading in bed....but with the Kindle it is no problem.
If you are unsure it might be worthwhile looking on E-bay for a second hand one.......some people may upgrade to the newer model...which is slightly smaller and weighs a little less....and you could pick up a bargain. Mine was second hand, from EBay.

correction from my last post. These books are not autobiographies but are from memories of Matron who in the early 1960s left to school and enrolled at Blackburn Royal Infirmary and her experiences on the way.
The Sister being again student nurse rising to Sister in Yorkshire in the 50s.

I didn't rate Matron Knows Best. I was working at the same hospital as the writer, at roughly the same time too.......her memories were, how shall I put this? A little inaccurate.(I know memory can play funny tricks sometimes so I am not saying the inaccuracies were on purpose) I would probably have enjoyed it, had I not known the place, worked with the people and had some similar experiences.

Received as a Xmas Present from a friend : The original and bestselling guide to The Oxford of Inspector Morse. Not that much to read really but some great photos of old haunts and one which shows my first year rooms up above Blackwell's bookshop on Broad St.

The Sister by Paola Kaufmann -open at page 96 on my bed-side table for the last 3 months.

Persuasion by Jane Austen open at page 103 on coffee table for the same length of time -need to change my specs!

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

My current reading list, for any of you who may be interested is as follows:

Howard, Jonathan L., Johannes Cabal the Necromancer
A sort of steam punk-ish comedy

Goodwin, Cliff. Evil Spirits
A biography of Oliver Reed.

Brandreth, Giles. Oscar Wilde and the Dead Man's Smile/ Oscar Wilde and the Ring of Death.
Oscar Wilde as detective. Very inventive, quite amusing and surprisingly well written.

Adams, Guy. Sherlock Holmes and the Breath of God.
Not as good as it could have been.

Pryce, Malcolm. From Aberystwyth With Love
Strange, wry, classic noir fiction set in Aberystwyth.

Crispin, Edmund. Holy Disorders
Murder mystery from 1946, very funny and very complex.

McKenna, Neil. The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde
Shocking and tawdry but somehow not surprising.

Holdstock, Robert. Ancient Echoes
Myth making at its best. Erudite and gripping.

Lee, Vernon. Supernatural Tales
Can still raise a shudder a century after they were first published.

Onions, Oliver. The Dead of Night
More Edwardian Horror

Newman,Kim The Hound of the D'urbervilles
A parody of Conan Doyle with a darker twist.

Aaronovitch, Ben. Rivers of London
What would happen if Harry Potter grew up and joined the fuzz!

Holdstock, Robert. The Broken Kings
Stunningly well written fantasy.

I am awaiting delivery of -
'Worlds in Collision' and 'Earth in Upheaval',
both by Immanuel Velikovsky.

Meanwhile I read 'Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming' by Stephen LaBerge & Howard Rheingold.

You label me as 'weirdo' but I am just 'different';)

Well isn't that odd and sort of, slightly, spooky?

Not only do we have tap dancing in common but La Berge/Rheingold is on my Amazon wish list!

His recent death prompted me to start reading stuff by Christopher Hitchens - I'm currently on "God is not great". In the tradition of George Orwell.

Got one of those ebooks (Elonex not Kindle), it's much easier to read in bed than a paper book & there's loads of free stuff available on-line - keep me busy for a bit!

Here you go Ma,the Witchy one reads the Kathy Reichs books too & she reckons that you may well enjoy the Patricia Cornwell "Scarpetta" series, same sort of vein but more so. :)

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Yes I have read a couple of those too....the titles escape me just now, but I recall them being very enjoyable.
I have a good few of the Kathy Reichs books to read......Monday Mourning is one, Fatal voyage another.
Tess Gerritsen books are in the same genre too.

Did noboby get Jeanette Winterson's latest book " Why be happy when you could be normal?"

Was hoping to receive it myself -but it looks like I'll have to place an order on Amazon.

I'm reading a kindle at the moment(Christmas present) and I can't say I like it as much as a book yet, perhaps I'll get used to it.
First book on it-'The girl with the Dragon Tattoo'- good reading so far but hard remembering those Swedish names.

Oh Gordon...persist with it...it is definitely worth it...especially if like me you are a bedtime reader. The slim little machine weighs very little....doesn't make your arm ache.
I have had mine since sometime in the spring. I had strong reservations about it, but all unfounded...and now would not be without it.

there are some very good deals at the moment on Amazon. I have just downloaded two new books....both 99 pence each.what a bargain...cheaper than a magazine and I will get so much enjoyment from them.

At £89 (and I asked for it) I have to persist with it ,Margaret! Questions would be asked.
I do miss being able to flick back a few pages to check something but as you say it needs getting used to.

Ah, I guess it is one of the new, smaller, thinner models.....no keyboard.
You can go back a few pages...or on mine I can...and often do.
I still read conventional books....but I think it took me, maybe a week to be hooked on my Kindle.

I have converted a friend of ours to Kindle...she got one for Christmas too....we have been comparing booklists....how sad is that?

There is an on-screen keyboard, Margaret but as usual I haven't bothered to go through all the instructions and explanations-just dived in then complained about it!
Reading the reviews many people said they didn't miss the keyboard, never used it. So there's probably is a lot I can do to make it more useable without a proper keyboard.

Margaret Pilkington 29-12-2011 20:05

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I don't use the keyboard much........but I think the old version looks better...they are still selling it but now instead of £109, it is £149.....and there is a new colour version coming out next month....the Kindle Fire(it is more like a tablet than a kindle)

Just finished Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore (on the laptop), a strangely surreal and enjoyable read - not everyones cup of tea. That makes about a half dozen of his that I've read and I have two books of his short stories waiting to read.

Mobertol: Listened to Jeanette Winterson's latest book on Radio4 about a month ago, don't know what the book's like.

I finished Jodi Picoult's Plain Truth on New Years Eve........I gobbled the last couple of chapters down like a starving man.......now I am really sorry.....sorry, that I have finished it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was not prepared for all the twists and turns in the story....and especially not the ending.
I will definitely be reading that one again.

I've just started the latest Jodi Picoult novel - Hou.e Rules. I've read all of hers and loved them.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I'm reading that at the moment......it is a real gripper too.
I was a bit put off Jodi Picoult at first.......I read one of her books and found it a bit depressing....can't quite remember which one it was now, but it put me off.
These last two have been very enjoyable though.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Have you read Change of Heart? I think thats proibably my favourite. Salem Falls and Harvesting the Heart are both good too.

Another good author to try if you like Jodi Picoult is Diane Chamberlain. She writes very similar but without the Courtroom stuff. Try The Lost Daughter and The Courage Tree, both very, very good.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Thank you for the recommendations.
I am going to write them down and then if they come on Amazon for the Kindle at a reduced rate I will get them...of if I spot them in the charity shops. Despit5e having the kindle I am still a sucker for the charity sho book sections.:)

MissTechnophobe 06-01-2012 13:52

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I know what you mean. I can't walk past a Charity Shop without scooting in for a look at the books. It drives my partner and daughter mad lol.

I've not got any of those books any more, but I recommended them to a friend, so I will see if she has still. I get a lot of my books from a swap site which is great.

Just finished this book " The Reluctant Tommy" what a great thought provoking book.
Its about a young 17 year old lad who is in love with a 16 year old girl but goes off to war in WW1 so eager and so in love with the girl but after seeing the horror of passchendaele and other conflicts becomes a pacifist even to the extent of aiming the artillery away from the enemy so they don't get hurt.
its a really good book .
By The Way this is a true story its the memoirs of Ronald Skirth
if you want to read it please pm me the book as with all the others in the gallery are free.

The Day after Roswell by Philip Corso.
I downloaded it free here -
The day after Roswell - Philip Corso - 1998.pdf
It gives an insight into an insiders view of the Korean War and the cold war, and appears to reveal the source of much of the 'new technology' we use today.
I'm only half way through it - have only broken off reading to eat and to post this - fascinating stuff!
