Someone sent me a christmas pressy frpm England. - "Forgotten English" by Jeffrey Kacirk. (very English name!!) It's a pack of cards with very strange English words on one side and the explanation (and much more) on the other side.
Example: Do you know what 'forswunke' means.
I've really enjoyed reading them. )I bet Cashman would understand most of them!!
If anyone is interested, I can send some of them on. I think they'd be great for pub quiz questions

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I usually have two or three on the go at any one time. This week I'm on:

Tony Hancock - The Definitive Biography by John Fisher. It's very thorough although falls into the trap that most biographies get caught in which is over-praising the subject matter. Generally speaking I only go for autobiographies and this is a prime example of why. It's also written in a very descriptive but rather turgid way that often leaves you re-reading sentences to get the gist of what the author is trying to get across. We're certainly not going to get an autobiography out of Hancock now but this will tell you what you want to know.

And Another Thing... by Eoin Colfer. The sixth instalment of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series and the first one not written by Douglas Adams. It's not overwhelming although there are tons of back-references to all of Adams' books and is very faithful to his style.

Doctor Who: Art of Destruction by Stephen Cole. Oh dear. For nine years while Paul McGann was the Doctor we had solid, complex adventures which appealed to an older audience but now we're left with a range that panders to the Harry Potter generation and no one else. The characterisation is spot on but it's certainly a range for children only now.

One of the most enjoyable books I've ever read and prompted me to go and watch all his old TV shows. Gripping stuff and absolutely fascinating to pretty much anyone interested in old Lancashire. They don't build 'em like him anymore.

Its about a north west police pathologist who has done the job for over 30 years.

He tells of some very rememberable cases but from his work point of few.
do you remember a "Mr ASIA"the drug Barron murdered in the Chorley area.

The most harrowing piece so far is the first chapter as its about the children in the moors murders but from his side of the story.

The Alan Clark Diaries: Into Politics Covering the period from 1972 to 1983 and his rise to the House of Commons, this is the second volume of Alan Clark's personal diary entries. It starts off in a pretty uninteresting way and although you get the full story you start off wishing it would just get to the good bits. It picks up fairly quickly however, and Clark's writing style is witty and interesting. Recommended to anyone with an interest in politics.

Dance and Skylark (Fifty years with Alastair Sim) by Naomi Sim.

This is the second book ive read about Alastair Sim, this ones by his wife Naomi, which i suppose is as near to an Autobiography as we would ever get about this very private man.

I usually like to read both a Biography and an Autobiography of any subject i'm interested in, then you can get a true balance of what the person was like.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Well, enjoy the read, Eric. I would not normally post my preferred reading matter on this site - in fact, this is the first time I have done so - had it not been for a peculiar meeting about 10 days ago. So here is the tale.

I was at a party over the other side of London - the usual stuff - canapés, Pinot Grigio, the occasional F-word just to shock - typically, very middle-class southern liberal, with a fair sprinkling of academia in there. I was just about to swap telephone numbers with this very tasty, divorced, tall and very curvy Polish wench, when I was interrupted by this American character more under the influence of alcohol than I was.

The reason for the interruption was someone had mentioned that I was from Accy and he wanted to know if that had any connection with 'Old Accrington in Lanca-Shire'.

'Aye', I replied, almost choking on my green olive 'Why do you ask....you a Stanley fan?'

Now I must admit that at this point I was somewhat distracted my female companion putting her hand where she should not have; However, this gentleman then proceeded to tell me that although he had been involved in verifying manuscript extracts which may or may not (and I can't remember the exact story) have originated from Mary Shelley's papers deposited at the Bodlian in Oxford.

From what I recall - and I do wish I had had less to drink - these manuscripts amounted to the best part of two missing chapters of Shelley's 'The Modern Prometheus' - better known, of course, as 'Frankenstein'. Now, while it is many years since I read that book - I am much more familiar with Boris Karloff or the Hammer interpretation - I do know that it can be readily interpreted as an allegory to the evils of industrialisation.

What then, were these chapters supposedly about? Well, about two thirds of the way through the published book, Frankenstein - followed closely by his monster - arrives in England and then proceeds to Matlock, in Derbyshire. That stay, in the original text involves little mention and neither does the stay in the Lakes. But these extracts, - according to my confidant, amounting to some 4000 words - describe Frankenstein’s stay in Old Accrington.

I would normally have had a good laugh over this, but then by friend pulled out of his pocket a photocopied A4 sheet...just about 500 words, in great, flowing script, and sure enough, there was 'Old Accy' in there.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Not neccessary to read the Jack Reacher novels in order, but advisable as individual plots tend to hark back to specific characters and experiences as featured in previous outings. Have finished my first Charlie 'Bird' Parker novel which tended to skip about between plots, but am well into the second one which is just as 'dark' but much easier to follow. His gay associates, Angel and Louie are brilliantly characterised as both have plenty of skeletons in their own cupboards, hence their extraordinary ties with Parker.

Peter James 'Roy Grace' detective novels set in the south-east of England have been recommended to me. Have picked up a couple which I have put on hold for the time being.

Now onto "The Boer War" Thomas Pakenham. How the British army became embroiled in the South African Campaign in 1899, & were taught a lesson by "Dutch Farmers" from the Transvaal & Orange Free State.

Agree a good read, a good follow up to the Pakenham book if interested in Africa at that time is "the Founder" Cecil Rhodes and the pursuit of power , Robert L Rotberg.

Also " Fighting the Fuzzy-Wuzzy" (Days and Nights of the Service with Sir Gerald Graham's Field force at Suakin) Major E.A. De Cosson.

Just Me by Sheila Hancock. Follow-up book to the biography of her late husband, John Thaw. Reasonably interesting and an easy read but the problem is that you find yourself wishing there were more references to Thaw than there are. This is essentially a travelogue of a widow and it does tend to get a bit morally-preachy in places when harking back to the Second World War but Hancock herself comes across as a very interesting woman.

Re-reading "The Hobbit" (again) by J.R.R.Tolkien, I don't think a synopsis is really necessary. :)

In my research into nutrition I have discovered this free e book

d'Adamo, Peter J - Eat Right for Your Type - Blood Groups

I am blood group B.
I have only part read/browsed it yet, but what I have read makes sense when I recall which foods I have a sluggish reaction to, and those which I instinctively avoid.

I am surprised to find that chicken is mildly toxic for me, but turkey and pheasant are fine.
That is just one of many snippets of dietary advice aimed at blood group B.

I am going to give the recommendations a try.
Nothing ventured - nothing gained.

Thanks Margaret for reminding me about this book.
Some time ago I translated the B group(from this book) into Italian for a friend and he has followed it scrupulously.
However, I tried it for for a few weeks(I'm A group) but I just couldn't give up my dairy products(especially milk!) and the cheeses I love most, I wasn't supposed to eat!
I really hope you have better luck

Well Bilbo's adventures are finished for the time being & I'm now about to come back to something more modern "The World according to Clarkson" that being Jeremy Clarkson of "Top Gear".

The last book was good fun, raised a few chuckles about to start "The World according to Clarkson 2". If it's like the first I'll be enjoying it. thing about them is they're broken down into manageable chunks so if you've got a spare 5 minutes you can read a chapter as & when, without having to try & remember where you left off.

Just finished re-reading the Axis of Time trilogy by John Birmingham. Alternate history, but really well done. Just waiting to see if my Dad buys his latest, Without Warning.
That's a subtle hint Dad!

The words 'Alternate History' grabbed my attention, so I looked for more info.

WW2 may be history to you but it is early life for me ;)

I like to read alternative history but it has to be ancient (nearly like me)

Finished Clarkson it was also good I'll be getting some more of his I think, in the meantime I've read "The Cage" (Military Biography)Tom Abraham, English Lad born in Cheshire goes to America as a young man & ends up serving in the 1st Cav in Vietnam 1968 in a Rifle Platoon. It tells of his service, capture, escape & return to civilian life & the effect this had on his life. I found it a good read.

Am about to start "Chickenhawk" (Military Biography) Robert Mason a Warrant Officer pilot flying Hueys in Vietnam 1965-66.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I sleep more than most folk, so dreaming is a large part of my experience.
I thought I ought to know more about dreaming, especially the lucid type, where you can choose what you dream about.

I downloaded this free ebook -
Lucid Dreaming Manual - M Van de Keere

I am about half way through it and am able to recognise that I am dreaming when I am,
but I find that when I tell myself 'this is a dream' - I wake up
...which is not the object of the excercise.

I hope that I will master the lucid technique so will persevere - maybe I will master it when I have read more.
