Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I got a Kindle for Christmas and I've just finished the last of a series of five books by Neil White who has set his books in a fictional town in Lancashire called Blackley. I recognise a lot of the places he describes. The books are fast paced who dunnits/thrillers with a detective and her reporter partner as the central characters. The first of the series is called Fallen Idols and is about a serial killer who is murdering premiership footballers. All the books are real page turners and I strongly recommend them - in fact I feel a bit bereft now I've finished them! He will be bringing out a new one around June this year and I'm really looking forward to it.

This is not about the 1970 tv series
Its a true account of the men of Bomb disposal during WW2 and the type of fuses encounters
this book is very graphic in places and not for the squeamish.

The Elephant to Hollywood by Michael Caine.

As autobiographies go it's a good read and he comes across as a very down to Earth guy and the book gives an interesting flavour of what it was like working in the British film industry in the 1960s.

The only thing I could have heard more on was The Muppets Christmas Carol, my favourite version.

Read that last year - great book by one of my heroes, pity he's no longer with us.

Interesting that his brother has written a book in response, from the opposite viewpoint, haven't read it yet.

Prefer to have a book in my hand rather than listen to them or have them in electronic form and I don't like getting rid of them though they do take up a lot of room!

"Hops & Glory" Pete Brown, Beer writer & propounder of all things Ale.

Relates his story of the attempt to follow & relive the trail of the Burton IPA's that made Burton brewers famous. This mainly due to the spread of the East India Company in the 1800's & despite what many deniers would have us believe, the benefits of Empire.

I am similar. My books are like old friends. I have shelves full, and the floor at my side of the bed is stacked with books to read(even though I have my Kindle - I still like my 'real' books)
I have to be feeling really ruthless to get rid of books. Many a time I have filled a bag for the charity shop....and then before the bag has been carted off, I have gone and retrieved at least a couple of them.

Ha ha - the piles on my bedside table and floor were getting so out of hand I now have a trolley with shelves so the piles are smaller - but the number of books isn't! At least I can move them about when I want to clean up!

Me too Margaret, I know I have well over a thousand in the attic still in boxes from my last house move, and the ones downstairs tend to creep throughout the house - I have got a bit more ruthless though, and whilst I could never throw them away I try to pass on as many as possible to friends and family.
But I do love my Kindle even though it's different from the feeling of holding a book.

Reading the series of books, A Song of Ice & Fire by George R.R. Martin. Four books; Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords and A Feast for Crows. First book has also been serialised on Sky Atlantic and the second book has just started on same channel. Just about keeping ahead of the televised version. Great books which I have managed to download (all four) to my phone (for free), so I can read them virtually anywhere - battery allowing.

Dissolution by C.J. Sansom a medievel murder mystery set in the reign of Henry the 8th(can't do roman numerals:)).......nefarious deeds done in a monastery......Murders most foul and the Vicar General (Cromwell) leaning on the monasteries to get their land and their wealth.
It sounds dull, but it isn't. I have nearly finished it.......am rationing myself with this one.

I read all the Cadfael books years ago and found it hard to get into any other medieval murder series. I do like the Chronicles of Matthew Bartholomew by Susanna Gregory set in Cambridge and the Owen Archer books by Candace Robb, set in York. These have in common with the Cadfael series that they are all set in a very recognisable place that I can identify with, and they are all medieval. I love that period.

I like the CJ Sansom books...It is a trilogy......and of course I read them in the wrong order.
Revelation was a bit hard to get into...that was my first foray into the trilogy.
Then I read and enjoyed Sovereign....and now I am at the bum end of Dissolution.(I shall be sorry when it is finished)
The set of books was a gift from a friend who knows I like historical fiction.

I haven't read Cadfael........I am put off by the TV series which had Derek Jacobi in it....I really like to picture the characters myself, and once I have seen a TV depiction, I find it difficult to overcome their characterisation...it is daft I know.
I always prefer to read the books before I see a dramatisation of the story.

Sometimes it helps me to have the TV series first - didn't read any of the Morse books until the TV series was well under way, and Derek Jacobi came along during my reading of the 20 or so Cadfael books and didn't put me off. Also only started reading the Poldark books after the TV series started. Gosh that was a long time ago! have got the series on dvd but haven't watched it yet, also got most of the Cadfael episodes and I Claudius, another Jacobi series I read after the TV outing. All those are for long dark nights in our camper van... Plus have got a box set of all the Bergerac episodes - no books to go with those I think!

I love Poirot on TV but haven't read any of the books, never read anything by Agatha Christie but also loved Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. Another TV series I loved was the Fortunes of War with Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh - brilliant, re-watched it recently and it was just as good as first time round, but not been tempted to read the books it was based on.

There are 21 Cadfael books and 13 TV episodes. I don't think a remake woud be a good idea, for me at least - I can't imagine Cadfael as anyone else but Derek Jacobi! Rather like Margaret has her own idea of people after reading books and doesn't want to see them on TV - or vice versa, having seen characters portrayed on TV, she can't read the books.

If you haven't already read it Margaret I can recommend " An Instance of the Fingerpost" by Iain Pears -brilliant historical/murder mystery.

Also Holy Fools by Joanne Harris is really good -set in France early 1600's about a troupe of vagabond players also murder mystery/thriller.

Am about to start a book which a friend gave me as a gift while over in the UK: The World of Downton Abbey -the secrets and history unlocked!
Lovely photos and detail of who the characters were based on and other behind the scenes stuff and historical detail - hope it's as good as the 1st series.

I read a couple of Iain Pears' books about the Italian art detective but wasn't impressed so have been steering clear of the fingerpost book - perhaps I will give it a go.

One author I have recently come across is Michele Giuttari - used to be in the Florence police force and that's what he writes about - really enjoyed his books so far.

Ooh, I will keep my eyes peeled for that one...the fingerpost one....I have just had a quick look at a taster for the Kindle and the first few pages were interesting.
I'm not fond of Joanne Harris's books...I tried reading a couple of them and failed(miserably) and I don't give up easily on books.

talking about giving up on books.......I recently the read the much acclaimed Book by S.J. Watson - Before I go to Sleep. I had read lots of good reviews about it.
I read it but I can't say I enjoyed it that much. It felt like being trapped in a spiders web.

I wanted to give it up...but couldn't get out of the plot......in the end my suspicions about what had happened were correct, the end of the book was a bit of a let down for me.

I love all Joanne Harris's books although The Red Shoes -sequel to Chocolat was a little disappointing. I think her best book is Gentlemen and Players -very clever twist in the story. (This one is not set in France)
Blackberry Wine, Five Quarters of the Orange and Coastliners are all brilliant too.

Another favourite of mine is Mary Wesley -great writer. I expect you'll have read some of hers too, if not start with "The Camomille Lawn" -was beautifully serialised on TV with Jennifer Ehle.

Another one I've just remembered which i'm sure would be up your street is "The Orchard on Fire" by Shena Mackay -my mum loved it when I lent it to her -set in the 1950's through to 80's.:)

I say they should remake them because I've watched most of them at least twice. But I'm not sure if they have shown all 13 perhaps they only show a few to get people to buy the box set?

Yeh I find it difficult to read books after seeing the films, I tried to read the first Harry Potter book but couldn't get into it after the film.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Last year i re-read all 6 Jane Austen's. My friends mother-in-law reads them every year! had a day out with her the other week in Whalley and we got talking about the wonderful BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. I think it's all beautifully cast and acted -have lost count of the times I've watched it (have it on video - not DVD!). She however can't stand the actress who plays Jane as in her mind she had always imagined her as being dark and pretty, not blonde and statuary!
I've seen the Keira Knightley film version of P&P but she is not a patch on Jennife Ehle in the role of Elizabeth. I did enjoy the spoof -Lost in Austen though -very much my sense of humour:D

Good Morning Nantwich! by Phill Jupitus.

Attachment 19947

Tells the story of the creation of BBC Radio 6 and the general radio background of Mr Jupitus. For someone with a media background it is absolutely gripping stuff although I must admit to not having quite the passion for varied music that is demonstrated here. The book is written in an amusing anecdotal style and it very easy going, recommended to anyone with an interest in music radio.

The Michael Palin Diaries: 1980-1988

Attachment 19948

Second volume of Michael Palin's diaries and it takes some getting through but is interesting on every single page. As each of the Pythons become more self-established in their own right it becomes pretty apparent that talks of a movie after The Meaning of Life would never really come to anything. However, they work extensively with each other on their own films and there are more Python-flavoured movies out there than I remembered. The Python company was set up to look after their commercial interests and even by the late 80s, despite no new material to speak of, it was obviously a busy little industry.

No news of a third volume but as a diarist myself I look forward to it.

On Royalty by Jeremy Paxman

Attachment 20557

A book on the monarchy written from the point of view of a republican. As you would expect from Paxman, this book is extremely well written and researched, veering off into the histories of other European countries and beyond in search of why royals have such an effect on the populace. He is blase about the fact that he has met the Queen, Princess Diana, etc. and yet confesses to a strange unaccountable feeling of awe when he actually came face to face with them.

Interesting stuff, especially to a royalist and at this particular moment in history.

Yes! I started off with resident evil 2 on ps1 and it remains to this day my favourite in the series. There a few different Resident Evil books out there by different authors, but I was most intrigued by the idea of novelizations of the actual games. I am looking forward to reading the books that correspond to the Resident evil 2 and 3 games. The books are not that long, I am half way through Zero Hour and I am enjoying it :)

Elisabeth Sladen - The Autobiography

Obviously, a rather Doctor Who oriented book but there are lots of stories about her stage career and a few revelations about the people she worked with on the show which are more frank than I would have expected. A very easy and enjoyable read for those who grew up with her on television.

I have just read Lilians Story the story of a woman born on the fist day of 1900......it is fiction, but details events in a factual way. I loved it. I felt like I was part of her family.......I could hear the bombs dropping in the blitz and taste the plaster dust....all from the safety of my bed. Those are the kind of adventures I like.
I was sorry when the book was finished.
I have just started(on Mobertol's recommendation) a Kate Atkinson book....Behind the Scenes at the Museum.

I am enjoying it Dianne. I also read another one of hers recently...'Started Early, Took my Dog' that was a strange read, but I did find it interesting.
I am on the lookout for her books in the charity shops.....and I gift them back when I have read them...can't do that with the Kindle(although I'm not complaining)

"Blue Monday - Fats Domino and the Lost Dawn of Rock 'n' Roll" by Rick Coleman - a biography of the Great Man, his roots in New Orleans and his career up to the present day. Fascinating stuff but amongst Accywebbers, probably only of interest to Cashy apart from myself.

I love any music biography Wynonie. I'm quite a dab hand at Blueberry Hill on piano but I can't sing it like the big fella

Maybe it's just me, but I see the film first, and then want to read the book. Recently, I have been reading:

Graham Green, The Third Man
Michael Ondaatie, The English Patient
Bernard Schlink, The Reader

And I always have this close by....

Baltasar Gracian, The Art of Worldly Wisdom

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

Well I am reading Jewish Manchester by Bill Williams, an illustrated history of the Manchester Jewish community, the largest in Britain outside London. Also watching Strictly Kosher on ITV yesterday and today, about the area today. When I used to go Manchester on the bus a lot in the sixties I was fascinated by all the shops in that area as we passed on the bus. As it was usually Saturday there were however not many people about.

Just finished 1066 and Rather More, a walk through history, by Huon Mallalieu, where he describes his re-creation of the journey by King Harold's army after their victory at the battle of Stamford Bridge near York, as they travelled south to meet William's forces at the battle of Hastings. He managed to do the walk as quickly as they did and ended up at Hastings on the anniversary day of the battle, 14 October. The book contains many asides about points and people of interest along the way and is a good light read.

Re: Bookworms: What are you reading at the moment?

I watched "Out of Africa" (1985) last week and realized that Karen Blixen and Denys Finch- Hatton were early members of the "Happy Valley" crowd in British East Africa (Kenya) after World War I and in the early 1920s. I don't think they were part of the wild party scene, though. Also, "White Mischief" (1987) with Charles Dance and Greta Scacchi is another film set in that era - and it deals with the murder of Josslyn Hay, the philandering Earl of Erroll and the susequent trial and acquittal of Sir 'Jock' Delves Broughton in 1941.

So I went on Amazon.com and got "The Temptress: The Scandalous Life of Alice De Janze and the Mysterious Death of Lord Erroll", by Paul Spicer. Spicer thinks that Alice pulled the trigger and killed her lover. I only just began reading the book last night.

Vril: The Power of the Coming Race by Edward Bulwer-Lytton

Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Its story of a subterranean race waiting to reclaim the surface of the Earth is an early science fiction theme. The book popularised the Hollow Earth theory and may have inspired Nazi mysticism His term "vril" lent its name to Bovril meat extract" (bovine vril)

You may have heard of the Vril Society – 20th century german occultists – who considered the book to be NON fiction, and may be the reasoning behind Hitler’s fascination with ancient societies and the occult.

Regardless of whether it is fact or fiction it is a reasonably interesting read once you get used to the flowery 19th century use of language.

Just finished this book myself, Restless. Was in a pile my son brought me. Thought it was going to be a 'man book' at first, but had me enthralled.

Leaves you hanging at the end, however, didn't realise there is a Series 2 .... oh yes, and has been made into a film version by the Americans. Can't get in UK on their playback ... son has the DVDs so looking forward to watching this.

Got a little mixed up with all the families .... the Appendix listing them all was at the back of the book. Of course didn't see it until I had turned the last page.... :D:D

Was getting to grips with a Nintendo thing that I've just inherited yesterday-latest colour model. Thught it waa just games but it actually goes on internet and has a camera etc. Discovered that it also hs a library of 100 classic books contained in it. Bit like a smaller version of a Kindle. Started re-reading Sons and Lovers BY DHLawrence to give it a try -was surprised to find I liked it,whizzed through the first chapter no time, touch screen to turn pages, bookmark etc. May conside a Kindle now for the future -people I know rave about them...

I love my Kindle...especially for bedtime reading......even the weightiest tome weighs hardly anything at all.
Oh and Dianne........I loved the Kate Atkinson book 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum' I finished it about a week ago.....and was sad. Quite bereft at bedtime. The next book I chose to read felt a great anticlimax after that one.....lightweight, substandard almost.
I have lent the book to a friend with the instruction to return it - or else.
I will definitely read it again...and look out for more by her.

Glad you liked the book Margaret - can be hard to recommend them as w all have different tastes. Of hers I've read a couple of others but was a bit disappointed with them -especially the ones with a PI called Jackson Brodie...but don't let me put you off!

The one Started Early.Took my Dog is a Jackson Brodie Novel...and I enjoyed it, but not as much as Behind the Scenes at the Museum.
I will be on the lookout for more of her novels.
I even did a review on Amazon for Behind the Scenes at the Museum...not something I do regularly.

Have just read your review! Amazing thing the internet...

Checked my bookcase -I have read Human Croquet and Emotionally Weird - the titles are great but i was not as enthusiastic about the stories though it's been a while since I read them. So many writers never quite write something that is up to their first book though...

Still reading Resident Evil Book 2(or book one if you don't count the prequel) but I am also Listening to Z.A. Recht's Morningstar Saga at work.

I have been reading(mostly listening) To a lot of zombie fiction lately and The Morning Star Saga is the one of the better ones. I am on book 3 as of today. Sadly I just found out that the author died before finishing book 3. I hope the ghost writer does it justice!

Just finished reading this - was a little disappointed to be honest, can't quite put my finger on why but it's just not as good as I expected it to be. It's ok,
just don't think it lived up to the hype I read about it beforehand.

Not strictly one that I have just read but one that I will never forget.
It's titled '500 mile walkies' or the publication incorporating 'Boogie up the River' is titled 'Travels with Boogie', both by author Mark Wallington.
A MUST FOR ALL DOG LOVERS/DOG WALKERS WHO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR.
A book that will have you laughing out loud many times as you follow the long distance routes taken by the author and his 'borrowed dog', Boogie.
I have bought this book twice; firstly '500 mile walkies' then, 'Travels with Boogie'. I have also lent the book out twice to relatives who confirmed their enjoyment, both verbally and by keeping the books.
Easy reading - Have just checked the Amazon website and noticed a third book 'Pennine Walkies, Boogie up the Pennine Way'. Have just ordered it to read on holiday. Will not be lending it to anyone!
Link to Amazon, for anyone interested is;

Yeah the Newsflesh trilogy I am 'listening'' to it rather than reading. I do a lot of audio books. Pass the time at work when i am doing the easier jobs.

I love Graphic Audio's product. They do the dramatised versions of the James Axler series 'Deathlands' Full cast with sound effects. :D

Actual books. Only a few that I am interested in do I have to read. Going to start Resident Evil: City of the dead(novelization of the resi evil 2 videogame) soon
