You need to go back more than a couple of years to say "you don't get jobs like you used to", ten, twenty, maybe even thirty in fact. We used to have a great infrastructure of manufacturing jobs in the Hyndburn area alone (and I don't for one minute think we are unique in that) but now we have very little, in fact virtually zero. Successive goverments have come and gone but none of them seemed to fight for the demise of OUR manufacturing culture. Now they are trying to make all kids go into further education (again to fudge the figures IMHO) when not all kids are able for further education, getting a job is what they want/need. Figures can be made to read how you want but anybody with a nouse will realise that successive goverments have and always will fudge the figures top make theirselves look the best bet. The greater problems are ignored as if we are all half wits and can't see them for ourselves ie immigration which can't be allowed to continue in the vein it is, our benefits system is in overload now and letting people who have not paid a penny into the system can only be a further drain on said system.

Its not a case of not fighting, they have caused the demise while pretending to be environmentally friendly but really just forcing our heavy industry to move abroad

I think it's more about industry producing good stuff ... folks buy Toyotas 'cause they are the best bang for the buck. And to make good stuff ... Toyotas, BMWs, Kawasakis, KTMs, and a whole host of high tech sh ... oops there I go again ... stuff ... you need a well-trained, well paid work force, with good morale. You need businessmen who can look beyond the short term gains of a move offshore, and workers with confidence in knowing that they will have a fair share in a company's success. Oh, and maybe, just maybe, a government which spends less time on its crusade against the poor and more on investing in job creation.

I watched the Ford story about Dagenham recently. They made it look like the unions killed off the plant in the end. They moved abroad where the workforce wanted to work.

No It was Scargill's ego trip, think he could do what they did in the early seventies, in time even the Mirror and Guardian turned against Scargill. It was said after the strike by I think the general secretary of the TUC that Arthur went into the miners strike with a big union and a little house and came out of it with a little union and a big house, Scargill wasn't a champagne socialist he was a champagne Communist;)

Can't be happy about her death, it serves no good purpose, but am finding the coverage difficult to watch. It's a bit like being forced to relive an ordeal. I'll leave it to others to champion and demonise her, I just pray that they don't do the state funeral thing.

Point of order Mr C
Red Robbo was at convenor and shop steward Longbridge British Leylands plant.
I had the dubious pleasure of working for his nemesis there one Harold Musgrave, just as nasty a piece of work acting as Michael Edwardes bully boy as RRobbo ..."set a thief to catch a thief"
