I thought you said she was a lesbian? Where do cows come into all this? There's far too much livestock wandering around here.

A whole gaggle of lesbians, three female whippets, four female cats, Ninny the goat...and me.

It was a misanderist menagerie.

Sounds like too much mucking out for me dear. But then you have always been pretty handy with a shovel haven't you?

Yes, it was good training.

Though thankfully I could retreat back into my bolt-hole.

In Mousehole.

You know, my great aunt Alice always used to say that you and your shovel were the talk of Moscow Mill Street. She was amazed the number of tunes you could get out of it.

Yes after that experience I was well known for my shovel work.

It was that, that secured me the position of cabin boy, on the good ship Venus, the following summer.

I didn't know you had trod the boards dear. I must have been in a coma that year.

I was under Joan Littlewood for my formative years, and achieved critical acclaim as a downtrodden waif.

I was destined to be big.

Sadly for the stage I was whisked off by a nob.

Aunt Alice said you were a bit of a devil for the nobs. Apparently she went to her grave without replacing them. Touching, that, I thought.

Yes, the days of a downtrodden waif, being led off by a nob, to a life of idleness are no more.

Nobs aren't what they once were.

I blame the Premiership.

The Prime Minister as well! You can't trust anybody these days. A flash of cheap brass and it's liberty bodices to the four winds.

Old bloomers are better than liberty bodices.

Bit of elbow grease, and your nobs should come up a treat.

You used to be able to buy that in cans, made specially for nob work.

People haven't got the time to spend buffing their nobs nowadays.

They come fully sheathed.

No need to rub.
