Today we walked from Crown Point to Clowbridge and back. I have tried shooting in RAW ( I dont know what it means) on the advice of my son who says they can be edited better. I have been playing around with Lighroom 5 for editing. Any comments good or bad would be welcome.

Frank, your pictures are always, always good.
I don't think the format in which they are shot makes much difference(well from a viewers point that is - from a technical point maybe shooting the pics in RAW format has some benefits).....it is the 'eye' that has it. If you have a good eye for a picture then it beats all the post production fiddling you can shake a stick at.
If you have no eye for a shot then, post production fiddling won't cure your inadequacies....and it will leave you frustrated.
Keep on doing what you are doing...I like it!

Thank you Margaret. I can manipulate some pics now better than I could before. I had a quick lesson for our Steven in return for mending his door bell

I think it gives a better understanding of whats happening in the camera if you give RAW a go. I tried it myself for a while, RAW means the camera captures what it sees without any compression or conversion, this gives you the scope to edit better, you then have to convert it to JPEG for programs to see it. However if you shoot in JPEG format, the camera software when you take a picture, looses data at the dark end and light end to reduce the size of the picture, it then converts it to JPEG format internally. I have simplified the explanation so I didn't confuse myself.

I read it and understand it when I am reading it, but somewhere along the way I forget it..... if someone asks me what it is I would have to look it up.

My Lumix G camera will shoot RAW pics, but I have to hold my hand up and say that I have stuck to JPEG, purely because it is what I know...even though I have programs which will convert RAW data...I haven't used it.
Shame on me!

Today in Pictures, you have to be in it, to wet it, a walk on the wet side.

1. The clouds are heavy, and just missing the top of Pendle Hill.
2. Cloudscape over Pendle.
3. The countryside is slowly turning brown.
4. A punnet of mushys.
5. Last fungi shot for today.
6. Walking around the wet bits.
7. The bridge that leads to the next bridge.
8. There it is, Cock Bridge........time to turn the boat around.
9. Leaves right down to the waters edge.
10. That is it for today, time to head back, it's uphill all the way from here.

If you just want to take pictures, view, then post them, JPEG is the best way to do it. Raw is very time consuming, and have to be edited as RAW, then converted to JPEG before you can view them in other programs. My camera has the option to shoot both RAW and JPEG at the same time, but does use memory a bit sharpish, I found the end results were very similar for my type of photography and didn't really justify the extra time I spent editing and converting RAW. So its JPEG for me as well.

Our doorbell went at 1-30 and our next-door-but-one neighbours were there saying their house was on fire! Husband called the fire brigade and I got next door to evacuate their house, just in case, waking 2 year old Manu who is in some of the shots -he thought it was very exciting. It seems our neighbours had left a candle alight at their Hindu prayer altar in the spare bedroom -luckily the wife woke up with coughing as their rooms were already full of smoke and they got out in time -could have been a tragedy. I only thought to get my camera once things were under control so missed the flames and much of the smoke, as well as the men going in with their axes and breathing gear... Sorry if some of the photos are a bit out of focus.

I feel for the people involved, but thank goodness no one was hurt. Candles scare me, so I won't have them in my house.

I don't like candles either....I had a very traumatic experience with candles...or no, perhaps I should say the after effects of a candle.
It is all documented here.

Great shots. I particularly like the thistle closeup, and Max beside the sculpture. He seems to be saying "what the heck is this?!"
