What did you watch when you was a nipper?

The Wooden Tops was probably one of the 1st things I remember watching on our huge black and white TV. 2 channels and only every now and again!! One of the 1st puppet programs I remember was 4 Feather falls, anyone remember that?:confused::confused:

I presume you mean on TV - I didn't - that mind controlling goggle box which dumbs the brain was not in widespread use in my childhood.

Instead I read books and listened to the radio

PS more book reading improves your english grammar skill

Re: What did you watch when you was a nipper?

We didn't get a TV set until 1952. My father wanted us to be able to watch the Coronation.
I remember it was a 9inch Bush. You had to switch it on a few minutes before you wanted to watch anything because it needed time to 'warm up'.
Our family all crowded into the living room ......a couple of neighbours were invited too, you had to draw the curtains to be able to see the picture properly.
My father kept trying to impress on us that we were seeing an historic event.
Of course, everyone stood up when the national anthem was played.

To be honest, in the early days there wasn't much childrens TV, not that we wanted to watch anyway.....yes there was a Children's Hour.......five until six, but other than that, childrens programs were very sparse.......we preferred to play out or read anyway.

the first television i ever saw was at my Nan's friends house, to watch the Coronation, as there was so many of us in the room watching a small screen, a large magnifying glass was put in front of the screen so we could all see it. It was still a few years later before my Grandparents got one.

Didn't most of these puppet programs had a weird creature or animal as a pet for the star, without using Google, can anyone remember them??? That's without Marina in Stingray, what a Babe!!!

Was only thinking about some of those programmes the other day!

I remember Four Feather Falls with 2 Gun Tex!!...wasn't the theme tune sung by Michael Halliday? I was a Wooden Tops kid too! Also Supercar and the other Gerry Anderson progs mentioned. Was there a monkey in one called Zooney? and Robert the Robot! Used to like Skippy and Daktari, The Littlest Hobo, Tinga and Tucka or Tucker? Fred the Beak? Pinky and Perky,Crackerjack, Flipper, The Lone Ranger, The Big Valley, Bonanza, The Flaxton Boys, Blue Peter, Captain Pugwash and Noggin the Nog.

What was that programme called where a young Lad used to have a Boomerang and when he threw it in the air, time stood still for a few minutes?...Used to be on either Sat or Sun tea time ish or early evening?

Oh happy days...and no worries...well not many anyway!!

We didn't get a telly until I was about 13 so never really watched kids TV, and was more or less tied up with home work after that

Re: What did you watch when you was a nipper?

There was no television signal in the village where I lived for many years after TV started broadcasting so like jaysay I never watched kids TV, when we got a TV I was too old to bother with TV.

One thing I remember watching when I was a child was the fires glowing over Manchester during the blitz. A mile walk up a big hill made it possibe and we were twenty five miles away, thank the Good Lord.

Wasn't that "The Magic Boomerang" Also around that time there was an Australian kids program about these kids that created a fort/town/thing made out of packing cases and things???? Anyone!

Re: What did you watch when you was a nipper?

Aye Taggy I'm sure Zooney & Robbie the Robot were in Fireball XL5 & I remember Marina from Stingray, as to the others I can't remember what creature was their mascot. Also on Saturday Mornings when we didn't have a Footy Match on, we'd watch "Zorro", "Champion the Wonder Horse" " The Lone Ranger" there was also "Belle & Sebastion" & we had to let my Sister watch "Heide".

I remember the last two as imports in Black & White which were dubbed over but the Dubbing was atrocious really, the mouth would be going then the words would come & carry on even when they weren't talking.

Aye Happy Days. :)

Anyone brought up in the sixties will remember all the badly dubbed foreign children's programmes that we had.

They were practicing subliminal messaging on us in the 40s - now it is perfected.
Walt Disney was a pioneer in the field.

I searched youtube for 'subliminal message tv' and found some wonderful examples, but the sexual content was too explicit to put the link here.

Subliminal messaging is not a theory, it is fact.
The theory bit comes in when the reasons for doing it are questioned.

Can I ask, why if you don't enjoy a bit of T.V. nostalgia do you have to come on to a thread about all our favourites and smear it with more of your keyboard diarrhoea?

I have fond memories of all the prog's mentioned so far, be it that they are from my own childhood or even if they are from when I used to force my children to watch the 'haunted fish-tank', they weren't messages, subliminal or otherwise they were exactly what they are today a little bit of time-wasting fun.

May I take this moment to declare that despite some of the rumours spread during an early accyweb meet I have never had anything against Maggie, nor have we conspired in any way, shape or form.

I do find it wonderful that to converse with her I have to rely on someone quoting anything I might say to her.

At the moment, one of my mates has been debating whether a girl is a bit too young for him or not. The solution to this has been devised in the form of a simple question:

I remember when I was doing my apprenticeship for Pilkington Bros. back in the 60's I would get home for lunch and the Sullivan's were always on. Years later my dear old Mum found a channel on Sky that showed all the same old series of that time, The Sullivan's, Skippy, Little house on the Prairie, Flipper! I think it was called "Mum your doin my head in" channel!!:eek::eek:
Did I miss any?

In the 50s we didn't have a telly but we used to watch it when we went to friends' birthday parties. In the mid-50s there was "Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men", "Larry the Lamb in Toy Town", "Rag, Tag and Bobtail", "Andy Pandy", "Muffin the Mule".... In the late 50s I remember watching "Mr. Ed", who was a talking horse. "Coronation Street" arrived about 1959, in black and white of course, with Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner, etc.

Highlight of the week had to be Sunday Night At the London Palladium. Everyone kept happy watching this, jugglers to the Beatles and then the revolving stage! Fantastic!! :theband:

There were some brilliant horse opera's (Western Series) on TV in the 1960's 70's and 80's. Cheyenne, Hondo, The Virginian, and High Chaparal, to name but a few. Call me old fashioned if you will, but they will no doubt be looked as corny and contrived when compared with the violent, sexually explicit, foul-mouthed rubbish that is lauded as entertainment today!

Remember 'Journey into Space', 'Riders of The Range' and 'The Death of Superman' as broadcast on Sunday nights way back in the 1950's, before many families had TV. Brilliant, boy's own adventures that developed the imagination and which we listened to as awestruck kids in front of a blazing coal fire.

There was also a similar Programme to Juke Box Jury, called Thank Your Lucky Stars...which made quite a name for "Janice" from Birmingham, based purely around her accent when saying " I'll give it Foive"

And 6-5 Special (Recorded by Don Lang), the program that helped launch Cliff Richard's career.

You really got me thinking now. Johnny Morris the hot chestnut man . the Lone Ranger and Tonto. Skippy the Bush Kangeroo. And a more serious programme was Hugh Weldons Well and Truely All Your Own, i think this is were the younger generation shown thing they had made themselves, not sure if they were "originals "

Hello there 'stumped'
You have a couple of years on me so some of those radio 'shows' I missed out on -
my dad got our first telly in the early 50s (a 9 inch screen which he later improved to 12 inch by fitting a custom made magnifying glass over the screen!) but your right about the power of imagination - not just the radio but books (my first 'read' was White Fang by Jack London when I was about 7 years old and of all the books that I have read there is not a single movie that comes anywhere near the reality that my mind created - Lord of the Rings??? - for me; miles off the mark!! --- and of course the weekly comics -
mine was the Eagle, my brother the Dandy and my younger sister - Bunty.
Do I 'smell' another thread on its way??
nice to 'chat' with you
Martin

Thanks Martin. Radio was always a part of my growing up and to this day I still prefer listening to the radio over the trivial junk that is mostly shown on TV as a means to satisfy the empty heads. Incidentally, 'The Death of Superman' and 'Riders of The Range' were recently repeated on BBC Radio 7. The Eagle, The Lion and The Hotspur were my chosen comics

I recall Zoo Quest, a popular program screened over several series in the 1960/70's, presented by a Belgian couple, Armand and Michaela Dennis, before Johny Morris David Attenborough took up the mantle.

Anyone remember The Trollenberg Terror?

And what about Paul Temple, an early detective series that would appear tame by today's standards?

Also The Plane Makers. Another successful series that ran for a few seasons.

Jesus, am I showing my age.

Paul Temple was given a run on TV in the 1980's, but it never had the same impact as when aired on the radio.

Bet you remember PC49 and Dick Barton -Special Agent !

Yes I believe so, I can't say I listened to it that I'm aware of but in Liverpool the title itself lent much to the ribald hilarity in Dock side Boozers & Working mens clubs !! :D seen as a bit of a double "Intender" !!

Broadcast in the 1950's and 60's on on the BBC Light Program, and always began:
'The time in Britain is twelve noon, in Germany it's one o'clock, but home and away its time for "Two-way Family Favourites", presented by Jean Metcalfe and Cliff Michelmore' It was an absolute must for Sunday lunchtime listening when Britain still had national servicemen serving both at home and abroad.

Google it if you require more info.

.

Yep, required listening in lots of homes,to hear if a lad from the next street/area was mentioned, also think at one time the program was divided up with 20 minute sctions to incluce Malaya and Kenya where a lot of National servicemen were sent on 'active' duty to protect the Empire .

Saturday morning radio was for the kids with 'uncle Mac' and childrens requests, favourite from that show was the song ..."she wears red feathers and a hula hula skirt " :D

In that case who hosted 'workers playtime' was it Arthur Askey??
The mention of family favourites brings up memories - the opening started with - something like - Overseas British Broadcasting (something or other) - and then into the music - ??? long time ago!
