Ban New Divers from road at night

BBC News - New driver restrictions 'would save lives'

Its being proposed that newly qualified drivers should be banned from the road t night and from carrying passengers of their own age, it said that this will cut accidents. I tend to agree, talking from experience, I've been lucky really I've only had minor accidents on the road, but the first one was at night on a moorland road only 3 months after passing my test

Re: Ban New Divers from road at night

i think that people should think of the bigger impications of this comment "ban all new drivers at night" let me ask a few questions to those who agree-
1 what time do you call night time
2 what about those young people working on late shift or nights
3 who is going to police it when the police force is to be cut
4 why just new drivers what about old drivers or those with bad eye sight

this list is too long and i dont think this system will work the police cannot police those on mobile phones those with no seat belst those who are carying youngsters in the front seats so how do you propose to police this???

If you see a pothole big enough to dive in, you really ought to report it to the LCC.

As always in this country penalise the many innocent people because of the few nutters. How about we actually issue proper sentences to combat the nutters ( when they are caught that is )

How do young people then learn to drive in the hours of darkness? What about when it gets dark at 4pm in the winter?
This is a crazy suggestion. It would be far more sensible to say that drivers(all drivers, not just young ones) should have no drugs or alcohol in their blood stream if they plan to drive.

Newly qualified drivers...whatever their age should be required to drive on P plates for 2 years and if involved in an accident/or convicted of a moving traffic offence during that time..then they reliquish their licence for 12 months, have to undergo a new driving test and driver education before being allowed on the roads again.
This would doubtless save lives.

Re: Ban New Divers from road at night

sorry jaysay i disagree ... when i was learning to drive my driving instructor when she thought i was doing ok .. took me out at night for a driving lesson ... this was to get me used to driving at night .. If this came into being they werent allowed to drive at night ... how will they get used to driving at night .. especially when its been raining or snowing .. I think they should make it that 17 and 18 year olds should have at least a year of lessons before they do their test and that they have at least 10 lessons at night ... i know of someone who had been driving cars and tractors for about 4 years on a farm .. who booked his test for 2 days after his 17th birthday and passed!!! but driving on a farm is totally different from driving on the roads .. and an idea being they drive with R plates (restricted) on their cars for a year after passing their test that meaning they cant drive faster than 50mph and no motorways .. that way they will get used to road traffic ... not banning them at night because if they have work .. and travelling home at 6pm in January ... means theyre driving in the dark ..

Re: Ban New Divers from road at night

P plates are a daft idea. Its like warning people that you are a new driver, same thing will happen that you see happening with L platers, the idiots will just try and overtake them to get out of the way.

Limiting there speed is another stupid idea that would only annoy other motorists.

As for not being allowed to drive on a motorway, motorway driving is easier than driving round town.

Re: Ban New Divers from road at night

Well Neil, while you think P Plates are a daft idea, they work very well in Oz and NZ.......and drivers on P plates can be pulled over and have their licence removed if they are caught exceeding the speed limit or committing a moving traffic offence....the new drivers know this and consequently drive carefully.

There is nothing in this country to denote a new driver...unless you count those voluntary plates you can buy from Halfords....and to say that other drivers would just lose patience with those driving on P plates just shows the mentality of some drivers.
And when passing judgement on what is easier, we use our own experiences to determine what we find easy...... we have had the benefit of experience.......which is what new drivers are trying to achieve.
Anything that makes gaining that experience safer gets a thumbs up from me.

There are drivers and then there are 'screwdrivers'(tool...disrespectful name)

Yea there is Margaret, they usually drive round at breakneck speed, with car windows down and loud music blaring out

Re: Ban New Divers from road at night

The trouble is that everybody is different. I would have loved to find the driving test examiner who passed my elder son and asked what they thought they were doing. He had four accidents in his first two years, none of them serious, but thought he owned the road. I've got to say his attitude now is very different. My younger son never had any problems like that and a ban on driving at night would have seriously affected him as much of his work was done in the evenings and he needed a car for transport.

I think we should insist on a minimum number of supervised hours of driving must be logged and completed before they can take their test. We need to find a way of making sure that drivers are safe before they pass their test, not worry about it afterwards.
