I was short on time (haha) and weak in mind that eve, I wouldn't under normal circumstances consider fried chips. It would normally be sliced potatoes brushed with olive oil and a sprinkling of chillie powder or Weight Watchers low-fat chips, both done in the oven which takes much longer......

The ham (lean) was pre-cooked and ready to be eaten cold (with the chips

Ah ... Ok. Busman .. thought you meant gammon .. must remember the difference.

I love cold meat with a plate of chips garnished with Piccalilli and maybe a buttered fresh muffin to slap it all into .. yummee.

It's ok Katex, must remember that I'm a southerner still (only been Oop north 7 years

) even a "buttered fresh muffin" would have thrown me a few years back, to me it would be a "roll" (preferably crusty)

I blame Garibaldi, and his lousy biscuits.

It all started going downhill for the Italians after unification in the nineteenth century.

They were much happier as collection of city states, with the shouty lot confined to the south.

People are always more content under independent rule, rather than all be lumped together, as some unworkable super state, governed from far away.

This is nothing new. Many years ago, about 30 I think, we had the misfortune to be in LLandudno where we decided to stop for something to eat. There were about six of us, we decided to have fish and chips and queued up in a chippy, when we got to the counter I ordered six portions of fish and chips. "Sorry" was the reply "We've no fish left". There just happened to be about 6 or 8 fish in the warmer. "What are these then?" we asked. "Oh They're reserved for the locals." replied the charming Welsh gentleman. I won't repeat the advice we gave him.

Me n mate had a similar thing when we called in a pub one early evening on Anglesey mid 60s, we ordered 2 pints of bitter n immediately all the pub including the barman switched to Welsh, couldn't understand us, big mistake,as we just reverted to Liverpool backslang n nicely gave em a real gobfull.

Llandudno's not even in Wales.

It's a suburb of Merseyside.
