I'd lay good odds that he'll pop up somewhere and give a quote about how it was his administration that secured the business, it was him wot won it, and all that.

Myself, I'll be popping along next Saturday in a 'research' capacity.

Here is a full size view of the new Weatherspoons. Nice to see one of our old buildings "brought back to life".

Seeing that photo and the ones Atarah showed of the bottom of Burnley Road, don't you think a major sandblasting excersise would be a good(and cost effective) way of improving Accringtons image? If only in the town centre and on the main roads?
The sandstone and millstone grit have lovely colours when 200 years of dirt are removed, if you go to Darwen a lot of the side roads terraces have been sandblasted en masse and they seem to be owned with pride. You can see how well the old houses and buildings were built.

The place looks bland and appalling, as is to be expected from a Wetherspoons pub. The long sign contains a mish-mash of fonts and above it the hanging sign is totally meaningless. Both are simply an advert for the pub chain, rather than state the uniqueness of the hostelry. It might as well be a happy Mac's.

Still, I suppose that's a fair reflection of what will lie inside.

It is certainly better looking than when it was boarded up with sheets of perforated metal.

Tealeaf, you are exhibiting a kind of snobbery.

We cannot all sup at quality establishments. And while it may not be to your taste, no-one will force you in there with your arm shoved up your back.
It will cater to a certain market.......and I would hazard a guess that there will be plenty trying it out to begin with.

You miserable sod! Everyone knows what they're getting from a Wetherspoons and they've made a better job of that building than what was there before. I personally love them as a chain, no frills pubs which specialise in real ale. I've never seen one shut down and everyone is talking about it, it's got to be good for Accrington.

I look forward to giving them my custom.

It's a hundred year old Accrington pub, not a Greek temple, what do you expect it to look like?

Look at the quality of the stone work, not the fonts, we're talking about a building, not a sign writer. There are a lot of quality buildings in Accrington which are hidden, un-noticed under dirt.
It could be standing proud long after the modern breezeblock/concrete rubbish has gone.

What snobbery? Please specify.

I doubt very much that there will be a proper tap room in this establishment That is a place where good men and true can exchange opinions sbout the wrongs of this world, where strong language is no barrier to frank discourse, where the bar is liberally decorated from post cards from the Costa del Sol, where betting slips are enthusiastically completed, where someone farts and no one objects and where everyone knows who's been in and who's not.

I remember drinking in Tim Martin's (aka Mr Wetherspoon) first pub up in Muswell Hill, in London, over thirty years ago. He was behind the bar and certainly a character, a big guy - about 6ft 6" with a typical antipodean sense of humour. A few year's later I was drinking in one of his first pubs in his chain, in the West End. It was called 'The Moon over Water' or something similar, a name he'd nicked from George Orwell's essay on the perfect English pub. Except this was not quite and you could see the rot was starting to creep in; it's been downhill ever since. I really can't be bothered visiting any of his establishments.

I do believe the stonework was laid by Accy's finest stonemason's, over a hundred years ago. All that was needed was proper cleaning and restoration, which numerous companies are now capable of doing.

As for the external signs, my budgie could have done a better job.

What is inside the building is another matter. I don't have to visit it to know, but I can tell you now it will be no different than the crap to be found in any other pub in this chain and as for the food - yuk! Give me a tin of Pedigree Chum anyday.

Tealeaf, the tap room doesn't seem to be required these days...since bad language and swearing in public appear to be the norm.

As for snobbery...read post 173 again and tell me there isn't an undercurrent of snobbery in it.......you compare it to Mc Donalds in a way that can't be considered complimentary.....and to confirm what I am saying you only need to read post 179.

You make unjustified comments, because none of the general public have yet been inside the place......and while you might prefer a tin of dog food, there are others who will go in and spend a few quid having, what to them, might be a pleasant time.........and it does help the local economy.

You may be able to choose better establishments(you may be better off than most Accringtonians....I don't know)......there may be more salubrious drinking holes where you live....down in the city.

And I must say your budgie must be very talented...have you thought of entering the bird on Britain's Got Talent?
