Blimey.

Who'd have thought?

You being 'vile and vicious' about your little chum.

Me, pointing out that he apparently didn't want to take part in some political spin scheme, with little money saved.

The world's gone mad!!!

(I would like to make clear I'm not defending anyone. Besides showing some empathy with those suffering because of the cuts, a saving of just one penny would have been appreciated.)

What I find most disturbing is this extract from the LT report:

Asked about the comment yesterday, Coun Britcliffe said Coun Jewell’s suggestion had ‘denigrated’ the work of councillors, adding: “I work very hard as a politician full-time.

“We are making a gesture by not taking an increase in our allowances.”

According to council and fire authority documents, Coun Britcliffe was paid a total of £43,382 in 2009/10.

However he said this included reimbursements for expenses including travel.

Now, if as Councillor Britcliffe claims, his political role is a full time one, then why is an element of his remuneration travel expenses? I can understand travel to London or other faraway places, but surely not to Accy or Preston. I do not believe that Hyndburn bin men or Lancashire teachers - as full time workers for the councils - are able to claim their travel expenses from home to depot or school - so how come Mr Britcliffe (and possibly other full time politico's) are able to do so?

a verry good point tealeaf infact is a political position classed as a self employed position i dont know but if it is shouldnt any travel expenses be claimed back through the tax man and not the publics purse ?

Don't think you've ever seen me defending the indefensible, irrespective of whether it was just a stunt or political spin scheme, it wouldn't have been so bad if he'd just made no comment, but to say he "has to live" I find utterly unbelievable, especially at the moment:(:(:(

If he was self employed he would claim the expenses back off the customer ( council/county councillor) but they would be tax free.

Irrespective accyman councillors have always been able to claim travelling exes from the council, they are not not classed as self employed as tax is take at source or it was

I've no problem with expenses per se. Any decent public or private enterprise will pay those. However, no business entity pays for it's employees to turn up for work.

Nor have I a problem with councillor's (taxable) allowances for attending meetings and the like or with spending time dealing with constituents problems, if those councillors are working during the day and using up what would otherwise be their free time on council business.

The problem is when someone takes a full time position for the job, gets (relative to local incomes) handsomely rewarded and then claims extra tax free dosh for their attendance.

It was his similarly aloof comment, when ignoring expense recommedations, that you couldn't eat in London for a tenner, and anyone who knew how to do so should write a guide book, which prompted my letter to the paper.

I posted earlier today that he's no fool, and I stand by that, but regarding his own P.R. he's absolutely hopeless.

Even if what he said was in private emails, which were subsequently leaked.

As you say he is no fool far from it, but even things like that should be kept away from prying eyes, as you say there are leaks
