When I'm checking to see if our Hyndburn/Ribble Valley Parkinson's support group meetings have had any press, up he pops...occasionally.

Not the high profile party leaders we've been used to. Though supposedly he's very nice.

I wasn't aware of this:confused: I thought that the leader of the council would be elected at large, like the Mayor of Kingston (here the Mayor is the chairman of the council). I still think that one major problem with your system is having party politics in a local council. Partisan politics probably get in the way of what is best for the community. Garbage pick up, fixing potholes, making sure that the streets are policed, providing fire protection, etc. seems to be what councillors should be paying attention to ... not which political party philosophy is best fitted to deal with the problems.

Ah well, none of my business really. Just seems kinda weird. However, it is entertaining.:D

Oh dear.

Someone's made headlines in the national newspapers.

Tory politician won't slash 43,000 expenses despite ruthless public sector cuts - mirror.co.uk

According to the Observer :Politics | Accrington Observer - menmedia.co.uk

Peter has very nicely promised Not to increase council tax to pay for the shortfall from his expenses, sorry I meant to say shortfall from the government.

I agree with you about party politics in local government.
If we voted for our Councillor and a separate vote for the leader at local elections we could easily end up with a leader of the council that did not have a majority support from the councillors. I think he or she would be unable to do anything because of the local party politics getting in the way

Whatever the election results are in May, and which party has the greater majority, and therefore controls the council, Peter Britcliffe will remain a councillor, and a county councillor, because he isn't up for re-election this year.

Lets hope then, that he is kicked off as many committee's as possible, and that the Tory group vote against him as leader.
It's about time he came to live in the real world.
