The first day, in Accrington, after Lockdown as most of the shops open once again.... The queue for Sports Direct was huge and at 3pm they were telling people not to join as they wouldn't get into the store before it was closed... apparently Blackburn and Preston were just as bad or worse....
|
Re: Today in pictures
Were they giving stuff away?
I will not be joining in with this madness. There is nothing so important that I would queue for three or four hours. I was seriously dischuffed at being in a queue at M&S for 20 minutes....and that was for food items! |

Not posted in a while so a Hare I spotted at Brockholes nature reserve near Preston, I managed to get within 15ft using stealth mode, though it knew I was there until a lady jogger ran past and scared it away.
|
Re: Today in pictures
What lovely pictures of the hare.
You were lucky to be able to get those.....well done. |
Re: Today in pictures
Thanks Margaret, until about 5-6 years ago I'd never seen one let alone photographed one but once you do there's no mistaking them for rabbits.

I lived on Riley's hill as a girl...played in Priestley Clough and saw them regularly.
I once watch a couple of hares have a kind of boxing match...I could not take my eyes off them.....I tried to get a better view and they heard me and ran off into the long grass. That memory stays with me and your pictures brought it vividly back to me. |

|
Re: Today in pictures
Ooh, what I wouldn't give for some of that.
Sand between my toes, sea air in my lungs....a sea breeze tousling my hair. I hate camping, but right now I would join any tribe that would let me have a seat on the beach. Lovely pictures....made me very envious. |
Re: Today in pictures
I don't know, where is that?
|
Re: Today in pictures
I would hazard a guess at Cornwall....the tin mine chimneys and the surfing sort of give it away Joaner.
|
Re: Today in pictures
Correct, Cornwall, apart from first one which was an overnight stop on the way down.

Re: Today in pictures

Some from Saturday
1: Small Red Beetle not a Ladybird as they don't have antennae like this but you can see the wings under the wing case - size about 4mm 2 & 3: Green bugs - I think these are young Shield bugs about 6mm long 4: Harvestman - a type of Arachnid but not closely related to spiders 5 & 6: Trash Bugs - Lacewing Larvae. They are ferocious predators that carry the remains of their prey on there back. I only know what it is because I've seen them before, plus it was moving and you can clearly see the legs and mouthpart in the second image. This was tiny only about 3mm long so massive crops to show any details... 7: A Sawfly or Inchneumon Wasp not sure |
Re: Today in pictures
Ryewolf you have been missed.
Lovely pictures as always. I have never seen a peacock butterfly in my life....but there was one resting on my bedroom windowsill...outside. I tried to get a picture of it, but the reflection from the glass made it a very poor picture, yours is far superior....and now I know what one looks like. |
Re: Today in pictures
Thanks Margaret, there were loads of Peacock Butterflies that day and I spent 40 minutes trying to get close to one until I found one that was too busy eating to fly away.

Re: Today in pictures
Nope...but I like the colour. It looks a bit 'boy racer-ish'....and I don't mean that nastily...I mean it looks like the kind of car a young man would lust after...but no clue as to what it is.
Is it yours? |
Re: Today in pictures
It's a Lancia then? I must admit I did check up for rally cars beginning with the letter L, I know despicable of me but hey? :D

so it IS a boy racer car then?

A road version of a rally car so very much a boy racer, if legit this one is also very rare.
From Wikipedia only 220 made, Lancia Delta Integrale evo2 Giallo Ginestra. Probably worth a bob or two and not mine unfortunately. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Today in pictures
I have heard of Lancia but not this particular model.....but then, that is no surprise.
All I require in a car is that I can get in and out, that it runs and gets me from A to B.....my needs are humble...no need for speed anymore. |
Re: Today in pictures
I like cars from this era, I still have an early 90’s car although not roadworthy at the moment, it’s neither fast nor expensive (cost £325) but I couldn’t get rid, I hope to get it back running one day.

Discovered this solitary flower hiding in the middle of a beech hedge yesterday. I don’t know why but I think it may be some kind of orchid, although it doesn’t look like any pictures in my gardening/plant books.
Does anyone have any ideas? Btw, I’m currently living in the warmer climes of Hampshire and spring is definitely started to ‘sprung’ down here. |

Good shout, Stevie R, but looking at Early Gentians, I don’t think it’s that. (Btw, amazed that it’s claimed UK is only place in the world to find early gentian).
My photo is not that clear but I wonder if it’s a Bee Orchid. This is a photo of a Bee Orchid from the web. Maybe the one in our garden isn’t fully developed yet? |
Re: Today in pictures
Could the flower be a cyclamen, the leaves at the side look a bit like the sliver leaf variety.
|
Re: Today in pictures
Nah, it's just a fancy weed! As you can judge by my response, I don't do the garden/plant thing. :D

From a trip to Haworth and the KWVR on Saturday for a Railway Children Special
Loco 957 was built 1887 by Beyer Peacock & Co Ltd in Manchester for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1923 it became part of the LMS Fleet as 12044, under British Railways it was numbered 52044. It was withdrawn from service in August 1959, it was bought by Tony Cox for £900. It was brought to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in 1965. Loco 957 is probably best known for its appearance in the 1970 feature film 'The Railway Children' when, in green livery, gained the unofficial name of the 'Green Dragon'. |

I've also got two days worth of images and videos (taken over around 20 hours on Sunday and Monday) of the Flying Scotsman and Union of South Africa. |

You'd be surprised, there are almost as many women as men watching the steam trains. The Station Master at Ramsbottom is a woman and there are several women working as train drivers on the ELR. Maybe the girls got dragged along as kids because their fathers were into the trains, all trains are called 'she'.... |

Today I had to go into Blackburn.
I spotted quite a gathering near the Cathedral....where the bus station used to be...many moons ago. I thought I would go and see what they were all looking at. It was the statue of The Knife Angel. I thought it was worth a picture..or two. here they are. I am hoping to visit again with a better camera to get some more pictures of this creation...it is really impressive and listening to one of the volunteers telling the story of how it came to be made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. |
Re: Today in pictures
The pics aren’t that good as they were taken on a borrowed phone.
When I go again I will take a good camera. |
Re: Today in pictures
I remember seeing this, I think it was Gateshead definitely on the Tyne. Amazing piece of work. I don't know the exact history (go look on google). I'm sure all the knives are a part of some form of criminality. Thank God they are off the streets. It's an impressive sculpture.
|
Re: Today in pictures
Just for you Odders.
The Work is by a young man called Alfie Bradley. It took 4years to make….and was made at The British Ironworks Centre in Coventry(I think) There are 100,000 knives in the work. These were collected at 200 collection points all over the country…..some of them may have been used in criminal acts….but they were all surrendered knives. Families who were affected by knife crime were given an opportunity to put an inscription on blades in the wings. 80 families took advantage of this and had messages engraved on the blades. All of the blades were blunted before they went into the sculpture. This figure is on Display near the Cathedral until November 30th when it will move on to the next venue. The aim of the work is to raise awareness of knife crime. In Lancashire this is rare with only 1% of reported crimes involving a knife. All of the above information was told to the people who visited the statue, by a LCC volunteer. She must have been good because I remembered it all. |
