I've read the same thing, however (according to the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust) mink farms were first established in the 1920's, by 1956 they were reported as breeding in the wild and by 1967 were to be found in over half the counties in England and Wales.

I'm sure you're right, but down 'ere in 'Ampshire, they had a little help to wipe out other river bank wildlife.

It's amazing isn't it? They drone on & on about animal rights, how meat is murder and other such drivel but in the end cock up the world just like the rest of us, (I think it's all to do with too much roughage, the more veggie you are the larger the amount of crap you dump on the rest of us).

Re: Today in pictures

Whilst I can understand their reasoning, as they were being farmed purely for their fur, releasing 6000 top level predators into the wild with no other natural predator was just irresponsible and criminal. Apparently, from what I've read, a police undercover agent was present when they (the activists) released them from Crow Hill Farm in 1998, though I've yet to read about any prosecutions....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-43133682

Reading this who is more to blame, the police for allowing this to happen or the ALF....???

The Ghost Garden

I spotted a news article in the local paper about a ghost garden appearing during very dry weather... So went out to have a look... Gawthorpe Hall, Padiham, Lancashire.

The outlines you can see are from the original Victorian Garden designed by Sir Charles Barry in the 1850's and was lost during WWII, it's due to the soil drying out at different rates. This is probably a once in a lifetime event - bit like England winning the world cup - (I was 4 when they did win in 1966) - only this was closer and could be seen and photographed....

I was lucky with my shot of the heron.
It landed on the bungalow roof opposite while I was charging a little point and shoot Camera. I just took the photo through the kitchen window seconds before it flew away.
Over the course of a week it had cleared all the fish out of my neighbours pond.

Heron on Platts lodge just around the corner from my house. It's a regular visitor so is used to people, so I didn't even need my big Sigma (which was lucky as I didn't have it with me) and were taken from about 8-9ft away using my Canon 24-105mm f4.

I haven't posted any pictures for quite a while...but today I have some pics of a day trip from Tuesday.
I have not been to Chester for 60 years.
Moving People(the coach company) were running a trip so I booked for Spindles and me.
Here are some pics of our day.
i hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them.
1) looking down on Eastgate from the eastgate clock
2) Sculpture in the Cathedral gardens
3)squirrel eating the crumbs from someone's lunch...it was very tame and I got very close.
4)The Eastgate clock. Strange that i do not remember this landmark from my visit all those years ago.
5) looking down Eastgate through the gate arch.
6) Coat of arms on the HSBC building.
7) beautiful stained glass window in the Cathedral.
8) colourful boats on the river Dee.
9) A bigger boat.
10) one of the beautiful buildings

There wasn’t any scaffolding around last year or earlier in the year Margaret.
This time there was about 6 foot in the middle with scaffolding in front.
I always get a lift up and down in the golf buggy now my old bones are starting to creak. They are over 80 years old now if you count the last few months in the womb.

It makes sense though to use the golf buggies...it conserves your energies for walking round the interesting places.

We had a trip along the Manchester ship canal last weekend. It was interesting to see the the chemical plants from the 'backside' rather than the 'frontside' which I used see when I was in an out of Shell. ICI. Eastham storage, LTD. and other chemical plants on the side of the canal where I used to go with my road tanker.
It's 30 years since I last went on the trip up the canal and there is a big difference. New plants built. old ones knocked down and some totally obscured by trees and vegetation. The canal is so much cleaner now with plenty of wild life and we saw a lot of Herons and even swans.
The coach took us to Liverpool and was waiting for us at Salford Quays when the ship got there 6 hours after setting sail.

For those of you who missed seeing the Terraccota Warriors at the World Museum Liverpool (Margaret Pilkington) here are a few photographs I took yesterday. There were only 7, I was expecting a lot more.
The event is fully booked right up to the date it is removed.
No flash or tripods were allowed and the crowds made it difficult to get any better shots.

Margaret Pilkington 19-10-2018 12:48

Re: Today in pictures

Russell, crowds or not...you have taken some great shots.
I knew that there were only a few of the terracotta warriors on show....after all you would be reluctant to let such historical artefacts out of your country.
I wonder how much the insurance on them is.
Thank you for letting me see them second hand.
I did toy with the idea of trying to get on the trip....especially as the timed slot was early enough to see them and see more of Liverpool. ( Matthew Street and the Cavern would have been on my agenda).
It looks like you had a great day.

Gremlin 19-10-2018 13:11

Re: Today in pictures

It was a great day Margaret.
We never left the museum because there was so much else to see on other floors, the Egyptian display for example.
Other people took advantage of half price Liverpool City tour on the open top bus after they’d seen the Warriors.
The weather was ideal for that.

Margaret Pilkington 19-10-2018 17:16

Re: Today in pictures

We spent a long time in the museum....and we did the open top bus too....visited Paddy's Wigwam(left me unimpressed...a bit like a set from countdown)....visited the Anglican cathedral too....and that was as much as we managed.
Which is why I would like to return for another visit.
Will watch out for another coach trip with Moving People.

Gremlin 19-10-2018 17:26

Re: Today in pictures

I went into Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on a trip from the British Legion Hotel in Southport.
As I was walking round taking photos I came across an elderly couple holding hands seated in an alcove. They were all dressed up in their finery and I discovered they had just renewed their wedding vows after 50 years of marriage.
They were all alone and I offered to take a few photos of them.
They were delighted and luckily they had an email address so I could send them the photos.
I must confess they weren’t the only ones with a tear in their eye.

I have been on "the mound" but not often, where I park depends on the direction the planes are taking off.

I was looking at some paintings of steam trains on the ELR today in a gallery in Ramsbottom, so I wanted to try and achieve a similar 'painted effect' using a photograph I took this evening, this won't be to everyone's taste, but I got somewhere close to what I envisioned with this image done using Nik HDR Efex Pro.... The original image was taken around 3pm, so the sun was close to setting, though I did reduce the colour temp to make it slightly more bluer....

Had a bit of a drive today, not many picture opportunites until I was on my way back around Blubberhouses.

1. RAF Menwith Hill.
2,3 & 4. If my ID is correct, my first photos of a wild Barn Owl.
