Beautiful shots there....doesn't everything look green and spring like?
It seems the tres have come into leaf all of a sudden. Number two is a very atmospheric shot. |
Re: Today in pictures
Thanks Margaret, I wasn't sure on image two as that cloud really dominates the shot and almost didn't post it.

Some from today, it was fairly grim today in Accrington, but around 16:30pm decided I would go out to the seaside at Morecambe and Heysham as the skies looked a lot brighter out that way.
The first two are of Morecambe Bay taken at Morecambe, the third is at Heysham... |

Yesterday...the lad and me took off for the day.
Moving people were running a trip to Liverpool...so I booked for both of us. We had an absolutely BRILLIANT day...there was only one thing wrong with it...it came to an end far too soon(though that wasn't the opinion of my feet. I am going to blog about our day...but in the meantime here are a few pics of the day. 1) Love locks...these are place by couples, they lock them onto the barrier and throw the key into the Mersey...aah, sweet! 2) A statue of a workhorse. 3) the Clown - SuperLambanana...a japanese take on GM foods(though this was designed by a liverpool schoolchild, 4) Well four has to be the Fab four.....my era, my teen dream and so lifelike you expect them to sing(though a bit larger than life...but then THAT fits too) 5) the fab four(I know you can onl see three) with the Liver building as a backdrop. 6,7,8) the heads of the fab four. 9) Cilla...outside the Cavern clb in Matthew St 10)George Harrison. |
Re: Today in pictures
Nice one Margaret.. I'm glad you enjoyed your day out and thanks for the photos. We have been with moving people a few times and always enjoy their choice of venue. That was one we missed out on.

Re: Today in pictures
Russell, it was a great day out...can't wait to go again. I could have spent another two or three hours there....we wanted to do a river cruise and see the music exhibition in the Cunard building..but there just wasn't time.
I have Beverley and Durham on my agenda. I like places that might have some good things to capture with my camera. I am going to do a blog later and put more pictures on there. |

You’ve some nice pictures in Flickr Margaret.
I don’t seem to be able to get to grips with Flickr otherwise I’d put my photos in the site. |
Re: Today in pictures
Russell, it is easy..otherwise I would not be able to do it.
I have a paid subscription which allows me to load as many photo's as I want.....I don't mind paying for the things I get pleasure from...thank you for your lovely comment Russell. |
Re: Today in pictures
I opened a free Flickr account and posed one photo in 2009.
I never tried again until today and I was going to put the OBan and Mull photos on but something went wrong. I’ll try again later. |

There has just been a major update over the last couple of days and there have been a few glitches in the system since....they did say there might be as it was a very big upgrade.
So, yes....do try again. |

How do I tag them Margaret.
Although I joined Flickr in 2009 I only started to use it yesterday. I’m batting blindfolded. |
Re: Today in pictures
down on the right hand side of the page there is a little box that says 'add tags'
It helps to tag the pictures with locatiion and descriptive terms....if you go to one of my pics you will see it tagged with things like(in relation to my latest uploads) Liverpool, Radio city, Three graces. Divide each tag with a comma. People may stumble on your pictures...but tags will lead them to the pictures. They deserve to be seen...not just stumbled upon. |

Re: Today in pictures
I borrowed a big Motability type scooter from the Park so I could get around easier and I’d just handed it back when there was a heavy down pour.

The last 3 weeks I've been watching a pair of Oystercatchers on the River Calder who have been nesting near the weir at Whalley.
Last week was the first chance I got to see how many eggs they were sitting on. I went down on Saturday evening, and alas the oystercatcher nest had got flooded after 12 hours of heavy rain, both the birds were still hanging around, either flying about the nest site or landing on what bit of the island remained above the water... 1. Oystercatcher 2. Settling down on the eggs 3. Flooded nest |

I was asked to take some photographs of the Anderton Boat lift by an old chap who is housebound and knew I was going there.
I cleaned the sensor on my Nikon and fitted my favourite 50mm prime lens. Put a clean SD card in the camera and a freshly charged battery, plus a spare in the bag. Clipped my Black rapid cross body strap to the camera and put it all in the camera bag. Drove round to Matalan where the coach was picking us up and as the coach arrived I took my coat out of the back seat of the car but where was the camera. On the sideboard in my hallway. What a plonker. Anyway I recently bought a new Iphone X so I did my best with that. No 1, The lift. No 2, Looking across the Weaver Navigation at ICI Winnington where I spent many hours years ago loading my tanker with sodium silicate. No 3, Looking down from the viewing area at the river, ICI and a car show. No 4, Taken from the boat coming up in the lift after a short river cruise. No 5, Another view of the lift. No 6, Entrance to the lift tanks for the barges. No 7, Another view of ICI. No 8, A Mini convertible at the show. No 9, An amphibian. Although the plant I refer to as ICI it is now Tata Chemicals Europe. |
Re: Today in pictures
Oh Russell...all that preparation!
That said your pics are...as always.....very acceptable. Saturday was a rotten day in this neck of the woods. Looks like it was a bit inclement there as well. I am always reluctant to take my cameras out in the wet. The phone did a good job. Love the mini! |

I painted these myself. Not much of an artist...and I can't compete with Russell's good lady. Her pictures are just spectacular....I am so envious of her skill. |
Re: Today in pictures
Thank you Margaret, I wil pass your comments on to her.
She is busy looking after me at present.. I've just spent a couple of days in Blackburn Hospital and I was a bit apprehensive after the negative comments about the place but I have nothing but praise for ALL the staff who made my stay comfortble. Even the surgeon came to show me the photos they took inside me when they removed my gall bladder. I even enjoyed the rice pudding they gave me. |
Re: Today in pictures
Russell, you take care and get well at your own pace....or as my good friend and gynaecologist used to say 'hasten slowly'.
Glad your experience in the big house up the hill was positive. I know that they looked after my dear old Ma like she was the queen(which to me, she was) Glad you liked my efforts at painting. |
Re: Today in pictures
As a footnote, not sure what will become of my painting....it might get framed and gifted as a present, or it might find itself on the front of a card.
Where ever it goes, it was done with love in every brush stroke. |
Re: Today in pictures
I’m sure my good lady will appreciate your efforts Margaret.
It’s a very intricate detailed painting. I’ll report back when she’s seen it later. |
Re: Today in pictures
I should tell you Russell, that the image is stamped (using a clear acrylic panel stamp)and heat embossed using gold powder.....my painting is the colouring in.
I used iridescent water colours and was unsure if the technique would work....it was one of those ideas that come to you in the wee small hours when everything is still. I am my sternest critic.....and I like it....so that says something. |

I was quite pleased to see the Kingfisher so close, alas it was 20:30pm so the light was poor so I had to use iso1600 for these two shots. I see them quite regularly, usually just a blue and orange flash as they are flying along rivers and canals.
|
Re: Today in pictures
Ooh, I love those little birds.
I have never seen a live one. I once found a dead one on Union Street in Accrington. One summer I sat down by Rishton bottoms for hours trying to catch sight of them....all I got was a damp behind.....and some funny looks from dog walkers and ramblers |
Re: Today in pictures
It's surprising how many people haven't seen them. I've seen them on the river that runs near Dunkenhalgh Way to Rishton and also on the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
|
Re: Today in pictures
That is because you are a lucky josser.
I used to walk down by the river in Rishton a lot.....and more so when someone said they were down there. And I live close to the canal and walk down to Barnes Swuare that way.....but not a glimpse of them. |
Re: Today in pictures
Yes, there is an element of luck. The one I photographed was on the River Calder at Whalley, I've been going most evenings since May for a couple of hours and only seen one twice.

Re: Today in pictures

So I got lucky again today...
Little Egret. It's interesting seeing how different it's hunting method is from the Grey Heron, were the heron stands still these move about a lot, they also shuffle their feet to disturb fish and other prey. Kingfisher, whilst it was much further away the light was infinitely better. This is a 100% crop from the original. Only had to wait 2 hours between 5-7pm for it to appear... |
Re: Today in pictures
Ryewolf, I think I should stalk you....you seem to get some very nice shots.
Again the little kingfisher is my favourite......they are so beautiful with their vibrant colours. The almost look exotic. |
Re: Today in pictures
They do look exotic.... On Monday when I was here there were two young Asian ladies that asked me what I was photographing and they hadn't heard of a kingfisher...
Quote:
You're more than welcome to come along the next time I go - I can't promise you'll see a Kingfisher though, bird watching is a lot about luck, knowing where the birds are, their habits and a lot of patience. I was there this evening from 5pm until 7:30pm. It's really interesting because I go here quite often, I see a lot of people regularly and because I've got a camera and a big lens they usually ask what I've seen or looking for... In fact I've probably spoken to more people in Whalley this week than I have in Accrington all month. |
Re: Today in pictures
Aww, Ryewolf...what a kind offer that is.
But you do not want to be hampered by a batty old bird.(me) I know that when I go out with the intention of taking pictures, it is best as a solitary pursuit. I am going on a day trip to Beverley next month....I don't quite know what is there, but I know I will come back with my own perspective(and pictures) of my day. I will also be looking at other days out....just to take pictures. |

This is really for Margaret Pilkington.
My good lady's daughter makes bespoke cards and this is the one she gave me on my 80th anniversary of my birth. Unknown to me she had looked up my website and found photos of the first tanker I drove at Gilbraith's and put a photo of it on the card and the actual registration number. The clock turns and its all hand cut. To say I was overjoyed with the card is an understatement. Hope it is to your liking Margaret. Oooops, it turned sideways for some reason. |
Re: Today in pictures
Quote:
I think cards such as these with such personal details are a joy to receive. The folk who live near me know I make cards...and I frequently get a knock on my door with a request for something special. I also write my own verses too and try to personalise those. Most times any money that comes to me for my cards goes to Macmillan...but until July 2020 I am raising funds to send a boy on a volunteering trip to Borneo(it is my daughters boy). He will be doing rainforest conservation work during the school holidays of that year. An adventure for him...and pleasure for me making cards to help his funds. |
Re: Today in pictures
Quote:
Thanks Margaret, I did photograph them in colour, but they lacked the punch that the monochrome conversion did, it was a fairly dull evening. Had the threat of thunderstorms and rain not been there then I would have probably tried to get some sunset shots. |
Re: Today in pictures
I thought that there might have been some sunset shots....with the colours vibrant in the sky.
That said, nature does not always treat you to the pictures you would like to take.....so the conversion works very well, but then monochrome(in my opinion) always lends an edginess to pictures that might otherwise be a bit 'bland'. I don't know about you, but I sort of have in my minds eye, the pictures I want to capture. Sometime this works, but sometimes it doesn't. |
Re: Today in pictures
Quote:
I know exactly what you mean, by the time I was taking the Broughton Hall shots yesterday (Sunday) it was already starting to rain a little bit. A different day, with better light I probably would have gone for colour. I pretty much know as I'm composing a shot just how I will process it.... When I first learned how to use a SLR camera, back in my art school days, it was almost always done using B/W film because that was the easiest to develop and process, plus Blackburn College didn't have the facilities to do colour film. |

It's no problem Margaret, bird watching is 90-95% waiting and 5-10% action. This is for you, seen tonight... I've sorta figured out it's habits/territory over the last few weeks, I've seen it on 3 days this week and 5 days last week, at all about the same time frame (between 6-8pm). Re: Today in pictures
Wonderful detail in those shots Ryewolf....and although the subject matter is not to my personal taste. I DO recognise(and admire) your skills.
I went over to Beverley today and in the Library there they have an exhibition of natural history photographs....it is a world wide competition and there were some stunning pictures.....but believe me, yours would sit happily among them. |
Re: Today in pictures
Thanks Margaret, I must admit I like photographing bugs and butterflies and that microcosm that's all around us that few people very rarely notice.... Plus there's the challenge of actually getting close enough to get the detail show in these, the front of the camera lens was less than 6inches away from the subject because they have flippin good eyesight....
So you can imagine there's a lot of frustration (and mumbled curses) going on as your subject walks, moves or flies away just as you are about to take the shot.... |
Re: Today in pictures
Yes....it must be frustrating to have in your frame a lovely butterfly...or interesting beetle....to then have it buzz off.
I think my dislike of creepy crawlies stems back to my childhood. Having five younger brothers, they thought it hilarious to torment me with all manner of creeping and flying things. I once came home from school to find they had collected every creeping creature they could catch....lovingly placed on my bed(and even some IN my bed). So I do appreciate your pictures because they let me see what I would never see if left to my own devices. But forgive me if I stick to Churches, views and things that are unlikely to lift off at any second....I feel safer with these. Oh yes, there will be some of those static subjects later on today.....from my trip to Beautiful Beverley. |

Re: Today in pictures
And just to confirm the Greek.... I found this....
MU and RHO (MP) to the left of the Virgin, which are an abbreviation for “Mater” (“Mother”), and the letters THETA and UPSILON to her right, which are an abbreviation for “Theou” (“of God”); thus Mary is the “Mother of God” |
