Thanks, I doubt I will be posting images everyday, 2 years of going out and trying to find something to photograph has been a tough challenge and to be honest I could do with the break from it.

20th Jan 2018 - Steam Train in the Snow

Black Five 45212 at Townsend Fold near Rawtenstall

I had hoped to catch the steam train arriving here from the opposite direction, but as you can see from the second image, it arrived tender first...

Gremlin 20-01-2018 17:52

Re: Today in pictures

I’ve been to the East Lancs plenty of times and remember a train with a loco at either end.
Both locos with front end to the train.
How hard would it have been to switch them so they whichever way they travelled it would be boiler first.

Ryewolf90 20-01-2018 18:54

Re: Today in pictures

The Black Five, in the photo's I took, is currently on loan from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (I think). I'd guess it's pretty difficult these days as very few places have turntables to change the direction of the engine. Normally steam trains from Bury to Rawtenstall come Engine first and tender first from Rawtenstall.

As most of these heritage railways have limited track and no loops, I'd say very hard to have the engine always facing front. Plus a whole lot of regulations to have steam trains running on mainlines....

I'm still glad they do have them running, I was 6 years old when the last regular steam trains ran in 1968...

Gremlin 20-01-2018 20:07

Re: Today in pictures

But one at each end boiler to train seemed crazy. There are pleanty of places on the line to swop them end for end and have them tender to train at each end. It made it a bad day for photographs.

The photography forum I visit has a Weekly Challenge, this weeks was Cutlery, so these were just a few ideas I had... Just some cheap brightly coloured kids knives, forks and spoons from Tesco photographed on a white napkin on a black background. (Cost £1.50)

For the last two I ran the images through Topaz Studio (a free download) and used a preset called Urban Street II, I then found an online graffiti tag maker to complete the image. The final image is the one I used for the challenge.

Great set of photos gpick.
I used to stay at the Glencoe hotel on my way to pick up a 44 foot twin screw motor cruiser me and my wife chartered from Banavie near Fort William.
We sailed all around the area for a couple of weeks, just the two of us. There was a boating club at Ballachuish near Glencoe where we moored one night.
It’s a fantastic place to visit.

Common Lizard

Just a few from a late evening drive up today around Pendle Hill - I've seen Common Lizards up here before, in fact on this same stretch of drystone wall. I only had to wait about 20 minutes before I spotted one. These were were taken using my Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens, either on it's own or in conjunction with the Canon EP12 or EP25 extension tubes.

I used aperture priority and single point focus, f9 to f11, iso 400

The lizard is about 15cm max from nose to tip of tail.
