2. Looking over to Pendleton Hill the visibility appears to be getting worse.
3. Approaching Whalley Banks, snow is coming down.
4. Whalley Banks.
5. Heading out the other side of Whalley Banks.
6. That is the road out of Whalley up to Spring Wood, we are going in that direction eventually.
7. What you can't see in the picture is the fine snow now falling.
8. A web filling up with snow, if a spiders knees knock through the cold it must sound like castanets.
9. Were you wondering were Whalley weir was, well wonderful !
10. Looking back at the weir before joining the road (where the red car is in picture 5.)

Is that going over Whalley Nab,Dave?

Yes, starting at Memorial park, Gt Harwood down to the river, left over the nab, then drop down into Whalley just past the weir, near Judge Walmsley pub, back along the river until the path takes you back up to the road then to Spring Wood car park.

Visibility was pants due to snow falling, yet it was very busy over the nab, I think there was a group of Geo Cash hunters.

Not far Restless.
Go through Colne, take the Keighley road to Laneshawbridge and turn right for Howarth, it's about two miles up the road. You see the sign and turn right into the car park.

Today in Pictures, today I set off looking for a certain picture, I never found it, still next time. Anyway here is what I found.

1. More ice than snow, but a thaw was setting in.
2. Pineing for the fiord's.
3. The sky was looking heavy.
4. And the ground was a little soft.
5. A long view of the lodges.
6. Another one.
7. The water is very still.
8. Off we go again.
9. Well.....there had to be one.
10. Funny shapes over Pendle Hill.

I have seen buses in Accrington with "Keighley via Burnley" on the destination board.
Catch one to Laneshawbridge and have a nice walk from there.

Otherwise you will have to make do with the photos I have posted.

Today in Pictures......I didn't know where I was going.......I didn't know where I was when I was there.......I didn't find out until I left....See if you know before I tell you.

1. The worlds biggest cigar cutter.
2. Am I in Canada ?
3. I can hear a wheezing noise........I think it's me.
4. A man at altitude with an attitude.
5. I can see my house from here.
6. Walls from the past and something from the present that goes very fast.
7. It's making my nose bleed looking down.
8. I have peaked, its Musbury Heights.
9. On the way down, a look across to Haslingden.
10. Almost down, can you spot Bob.

So there it is Musbury heights and Calf Hey reservoir...plus a little fat chap with wet, snow covered trousers, and wet socks.........This has been Dave Mac for News at Ten handing you back to the studio.

Yes I was, I often go out and look at that building early on - I wondered what all the police and fire engines where doing rushing by - then put on the TV and they were talking about it - but by then all the streets were blocked off by Police. Even when it was full daylight you couldn't see the top of that tower it was shrouded in fog.

Today in Pictures, theres no business like snow business.

1. Its fine snow, with impaired visibility.
2. Passing Jackhouse Reservoir I took this footpath, not the most sensible idea, I wont be going back that way.
3. Its not a bridge to far, as I'm only half way around.
4. Hands up if you have seen an icicle that goes around corners.
5. You can never have to many icicles.
6. You cant see it, but the snow is horizontal with a bitting wind.
7. Oy !........... stop eating snow.
8. This used to be the top reservoir.
9. The lane that goes up the side of the reservoir.
10. Its a left turn here and back to the car.

Yes, I do...and believe me I was tempted....that is the kind of picture I would put on a Christmas card.......I would print out the picture(on silk paper), stick it with sticky pads onto a pine green card(so that the pic was slightly raised away from the card) and use stick on sparkly greetings....with my own verse inside.......I keep telling myself I missed my way.(I am deluded, I know)

Just wanted to thank everyone for their pics of Accy in the snow. We haven't had any at all here, and even across the bay I don't think there's much on the hills. Looking at the Met Office maps we seem to be at the eye of the storm, with all the snow circling around us and nothing directly over us. So it's nice to see somewhere where it has fallen - and still looks pretty!

Today in Pictures,.........with a smile on my face, and a song in my heart, I headed out to play in the snow.

1.Right......who ordered the snow cone, mines a bowl of chilly.
2. The stream between Childers Green and Castle Clough.
3. It's the ford.
4. Top edge of the clough.......chase me.
5. Someone left their xylophone out in the rain, and I don't think that I can play it.
6. I came all this way for a moist moment.
7. So then we head back along the Clough bottom, sounds like a case for Germolene.
8. When I took this there was a bloke tucked into a crevice taking photos of icicles, is that strange or what.
9. If you are looking for the footpath.........its the wet bits.
10. So there it is, full circle, all that remains is the walk back to Huncoat Stocks, to the car.

5. Across the road and in the direction of Clayton Fields.
6. After a few barbed wire fences, a bit of the Brook I have never walked.
7. A Private fishing lodge, or so the sign says.
8. Past the weir, and heading for the park.
9. It is getting dark, perhaps its time for home.
10. There it is, almost at the start point, and it has gone dark.

5. Cotoneaster berries.
6. The last time I took this photo the sun was shining and the birds were singing, now its snowing and my teeth are chattering.
7. Bell Lane.
8. Bell Lane looking back to the canal.
9. Heading through the woods towards Wilson's Playing Field.

I must have gone a bit giddy today, when I got home I had taken over 350 pictures, that will take some sorting through. I might get through them over the next couple of days as I have appointments tomorrow and shopping on Wednesday so wont have much to post.

I did at one point check the camera to see it I had put the setting to monochrome as they looked more B&W on the camera screen.

I've looked for those sculpters before and never found any, there are supposed to be quite a few on that walk from top to bottom.

Some more photos. One of the building scorched by burning fuel from the crashed helicopter - that building is Rentokill offices and the only other person killed by it was going to work there...

Thanks for the pics Kes.

Yep, Susie - the tower is pretty ugly for a residential building. It was on the local news last night that the pilot of the chopper was texting on his mobile 4 mins before he crashed and also at the time of crash was tuning in his radio.

Today in Pictures.......I now have number three, one more to go.........then I can collect my Nectar points.

1. Clapper Bridge. we used this as base camp.
2. Pack Horse Bridge.
3. Wycoller Hall thought to be the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in the novel Jane Eyre.
4. Built by the Hartley family at the end of the 16th century.
5. The Heritage Centre in the grounds of the Hall.
6. That is the destination point.
7. After a bit of puffing and panting, Eureka.
8. With the Atom to my back, the view down the valley.
9. Heading back down, the snow is very deep where it has drifted.
10. This type of fencing is all around the area, it has a name but I am unable to find it ( it sounds like vaccury, but the jury is out on that )

Just a final comment, someone has nicked the silver ball that was in the centre of the sculpture.

Superb shots today Dave, it was a lovely day for a walk here, sadly didn't get out but glad you made it. Lovely monochrome pic at 6. Wycoller is a strange place, bit spooky in places.

It was a lovely walk, although the snow came over my gaiters several times, which was a disaster as they were in my rucksack.( the last bits a joke,........ they were under my hat ).

I was not sure of the spelling of that wall, so my googles came up short.......insert your own joke here.............I did come up with Vaccary Farms which I thought might be a link, vacca, Latin for cow, cow fences !
I did discover that there were Vaccary farms on Hameldon hill, and in the area of spire farm. Although interesting it did distract me from my quest.

The vaccaries were originally farmed by the monks of the Kirkstall Abbey manorial grange commonly known as Black Abbey. Retlaw has posted about them quite a bit, just put vaccaries in the search box at the top of the page if you want to find the threads.

I did as you suggested, and the facts that it produced show me I know very little about the areas past.

The Vaccaries in the possesion of th Monks of Kirkstall, were the Grange (Black Abbey Fold) Friar (Hll) Riley, and Lower and Higher Antley. There were two others but their names elude me at the moments, will have to check some old files.

It was the vaccary walls around the fields in Wycoller that started this particular query. Attempting to find the name of the walls I discovered that there were Vaccaries in this area, something I knew nothing about. Thanks for the information.

Today in Pictures, Wiswell to Pendleton Moor, and back again.

1. Upwards on a farm track.
2. Its steeper than it looks.
3. Longridge Fell in the distance.
4. Whalley and beyond, you can see the viaduct in the centre of the snap.
5. Looking over the other side, the Coppice and Oswaldtwistle Moor in the distance.
6. In the direction of Whalley Nab.
7. The highest point, and the site of an old quarry.
8. This is the start of the descent.
9. The Nab in the distance, over this wall, it used to be thick with Pine trees, all cut down a few years ago and re- planted with saplings.
10. Slightly lower viewpoint, this time looking in the direction of Gt. Harwood.

There is no bravery involved, stupidity, gormless, idiotic are more like the words to use, however after tramping through at least 6 inch of snow, sometimes with knee deep drifts it was a good walk.

So there I was in my one man tent, just light the primus and sorted a brew out, zipped up the flap to get out of the cold and sat back to drink it. There was a tap on the flap, and the zip was undone, this bloke poked his head through the space and said Look if your not going to buy it, can you leave Winfield's site....................just being silly again.

It could all be gone by tomorrow if the weather stays like it is, that means back to tramping through mud.
