Today in Pictures, a bit of a disappointment, I walked the section of canal from Rishton High Street, to Cut Lane. The most un-photogenic section of canal I have walked, and also the most antisocial, the number of people with Staffy type dogs that snarled, barked and looked dangerous, made the walk a bit nervy. Any way this is all I have for today.

1. I don't know what this was or did, but its right on the waters edge.
2. Seagulls on a stick.
3. Heading toward Cut Lane.
4. Bet that lot would make a bit of money weighed in.
5. Turn right at the bridge, Cut Lane, and back down the old railway line.

Yet you still managed to find something to snap!

Think the trouble with Staffies is more the owners than the dogs:

Definately agree with you Sue. Staffies can be great little dogs but they seem to be used by thr wrong people who can get them a bad name

Couldn't agree more, I have met on my travels some lovely Staffy type dogs, but when they are snarling and barking you get a cold sweat coming over you.

I was just coming off the canal, on my way back home, when this couple, he was holding a lead that had two Staffordshire dogs on the end, she was walking in front telling people to put there dogs on a lead as her dogs didn't like other dogs. With the right training this wouldnt happen.

More photos from Cape Verde.

  1. A building in fairly typical state of repair
  2. A building that has been tarted up - I came across a photo of this in 2006 on the www and it looked worse than the first pic!
  3. A square in town
  4. Catholic church with typical Portuguese architecture - Dianne, Man in Panama is second from left in photo!
  5. Another typically run down building
  6. And another that has been tarted up
  7. View over the harbour as we went up into the mountains. Our cruise ship dominates
  8. View over the town from above
  9. The road up the mountain - you can imagine how much my rear end enjoyed the ride on a bus with hard plastic seats!
  10. Typical moonscape in the mountains

PS Just noticed 3000+ plus posts up. Wow!!

to be fair whenever i am out with deco, he is off the lead, but as soon as i spot another dog/people i put him on the lead, then when out of sight, back off again, and i do find it a little annoying those that dont repay the compliment.

Sue -it looks an interesting place. I did spot the man in the Panama hat!
In Tenerife things are similar - Santa Cruz is a fantastic city - very chaotic and higgledy- piggledy in the suburbs with gorgeous colonial style architecture, lovely squares and gardens in the center -much bigger than the town you show in Cape Verde. I have noticed that the locals in Tenerife don't care much about the outside of their houses so you get a real contrast between the ex-pats/tourist/public buildings which are well kept and then some places which have exposed breeze-block and peeling paint!

That road going up into the mountain looks a bit like it is cobbled - volcanic cobbles presumably!

Yes - sounds similar - but Tenerife is still part of Spain while Cape Verde is independent - so I reckon it will be a long time before things improve there. I reckon in places like that the climate is just too debilitating for folks to take an interest in houses etc - it would be for me anyway.

Yes volcanic cobbles I think - better than nothing I suppose!

The last of Cape Verde.
  1. Unspoilt beach with a brand new road - probably means they are going to develop it
  2. Traditional musicians and dancing which looked more like wrestling
  3. The Cape Verdeans are proud of their carnival and put on a show for us. There were several of these dancers, bare chested but wearing glittery high heels. I assume they were male
  4. Costume with very precarious head dress
  5. Butterfly costume
  6. Another carnival outfit
  7. Metal sculptures in the museum
  8. Finial on the museum building
  9. Chapel/cemetery in the mountains
  10. Catfish Bay - a new development but there didn't appear to be much there apart from some posh houses on the road to the coast

Dakar (Senegal) today. This is a large port city, which has seen better days and declined since the colonial power (France in this case) left. In the morning we went on a trip to Goree Island about three miles offshore, with slave trade associations and something of a contrast to downtown Dakar.

  1. Cars and trucks on the harbour - imports, presumably
  2. Harbour cranes
  3. The city comes right down to the harbour
  4. Ships in harbour - the one on the left is in a floating dry dock
  5. First view of the island
  6. Top deck of the ferry
  7. Buildings on the shore as we approached the island
  8. Old fort on the island
  9. Women disembarking the ferry
  10. Men disembarking the ferry - we saw them later chanting in a street procession - think they were on their way to the mosque

How the same sunset changes even though you're in the same area Jen and Dave! Looks like there were some heavy skies and I love Dave's pylons -quite menacing.

Hiya all,

Wow I have been so busy since the weekend and only just found some time to do a quick catch up before I have to shoot out again. I thought I would pop in and share a few pictures I took Sun, Mon, Tue but didn't get chance to upload.

I have resorted to creating a folder on my desktop where I can store my daily photos :D

Here are a few Sun, Mon, Tue:

1-5: Sunday stoll along the canal (Clayton to Burnley stretch)
6 & 7: Sunrise on Monday
8-10: Sunset Tuesday

Cheers

Dawn :)

  6. Heading toward the Slave House - one of the problems with this trip was that the sheer number of tourists rather overwhelmed the place so it was difficult to get a shot without large numbers of bodies in it
  7. Sign over the door of the Slave House
  8. Man in (or rather with) Panama, frowning cos he's concentrating on a rather erudite lecture on slavery being delivered in both French and English by a university professor

Great pics Darren, you obviously made it back safe and sound.

When I was doing amateur dramatics I was the witch twice in our annual pantomimes so I don't mind owning up to 9 - but she looks a bit too young and attractive to be me!

no its to the nne of the trig point on pendle, dont want to tell people where it is exactly, and spoil the fun of finding it. but its a climb up the hill if you want to find it lol

got the res in cos i set off from newchurch. through fell wood, then followed the pendle circular, then took a detour, straight up the side of the clough, (have to get off the grid sometime!) up to the trig point, then well then back down into Barley the 3/4 mile on the road back to Newchurch.

Hi Dave, I always look forward to seeing your photos for the day. These are great and give me more ideas of where to go to take photos, especially of the sun and sunsets. I know the advice is not to shoot into the sun, but I often do, although I try to use a filter .... if I remember lol.

This is my favourite thread on AW .... love popping by to see the new pics being posted.

Thanks guys and gals for the great pics.

Lovely pics again from all. Are the colours of your skies tweaked or natural Dawn?

Sue I especially liked number two for the perspective and feel of the place and the woman's head-dress in 3 is great. Nice pics of the man with the panama! Does he not take any of you?

Darren -glad your quest to find the well was a success -looks like there was a lot of water down -hope your boots held out!

Dave lovely reflections again - nice swans and some great colours.

Haven't been inspired to take pics recently -I am too busy faffing about! A month till I'm in Tenerife -should take some then! Keep up the good work all...

You and I seem to have an eye for the "feel" of the same pictures - I liked 2 as well! It's a pity there were so many tourists on the island - I would have liked to see it with just the locals - and me. But as they get most of their living from tourism that is not likely to happen.

Richard is expressly forbidden from taking photos of me though he does sneak the odd one in and they are usually awful - last time he managed to cut my head off! In return I don't feel I can take more than the odd shot of him. And most of the time we were away this time he was wearing his floppy hiking hat - which is not as elegant as the panama though I do have a few shots with him wearing it. (He didn't wear the panama on the ship as he was afraid of it getting blown into the sea!)

on a thursday night down at the Eatery 1853 (globe centre) the across college restaurant, its beat the clock, you get 2 courses for the price of the time you order (between 5pm-7pm) choice of 3 starter/3 mains/3 dessert

so for example chicken breast with carrot & parsnip puree on a potato/celeriac rosti, with profiteroles to follow ordered at 5pm is £5 Bargain!!!!, ordered at 7pm (last time to order) its £7

i went to get pics of mrs church menu, but it didnt happen so i got these pics of some of their food to share with you all whilst i was there

(and i eat em after mmmmmmmm)

best to ring and book in advance but can usually get in no problem, you can even buy some wine while your there to wash it all down!!!

Wow great set of shots Dave, especially considering the rain was dreadful today. I love the fungi pics and I am envious that I have not had chance this fungi season to do much foraging photography. Also like the processing on the last shot, good work.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hiya Dianne,

Thanks .... I have adjusted the levels on some of the photos to bring out the rich colours in the sky and enhance the cloud detail.

I am sure you will have a great time in Tenerife and take loads of pictures. It helps to take a break from photography at times, especially before a good old jolly, so that you can recharge your photography mojo (as I like to call it :D) .... nothing wrong with that, enjoy the rest.

Sue -the last set of ten to me really are great -wouldn't let me give you more K. You managed to captures the locals and though I spotted the man with the panama hat twice and only one other tourist, they are both shots with a lovely feel to them. Looks like an interesting place.

Dave more great fungi especially the first one, lovely close-up and super colours - and some nice arty shots to.

Darren -your post took me back in time. Used to go to the old catering college on Blackburn road when my sister was training there at the start of the 80's had some great meals. It sounds and looks like it's even better now! Bon apetit...:)

I think one of the reasons it was so nice was that there are no cars on the island - you will see the contrast when I post my shots of downtown Dakar.

BTW if you want to see the only shot of me from the holiday I posted it in the alcohol/canal thread - you will see why!

After our excursion to the island we took ourselves off to downtown Dakar for the afternoon as the city centre was very close to the port. It was sad to see a modern city falling apart at the seams. The traffic was horrendous and there were cars parked everywhere - the only place to walk was in the road as the pavements were also cluttered with stalls etc -all business appeared to be done in the open.

It was also the worst place we encountered for hassling - and very difficult to get the hasslers to take no for an answer. Not a pleasant experience.

The first three pictures were taken in the main square.

  1. Government building complete with dead lamppost
  2. These lions don't look very happy!
  3. Another government building with typical car parking facilities
  4. Small mosque in a crowded street
  5. One of the main markets. The building in the background is the market hall, full of fly blown meat and stray cats
  6. Typical street stall
  7. Minaret of the main mosque
  8. Dakar community transport
  9. Get your hub caps here!
  10. Art Deco-ish building in a street near the port

Hiya Shillelagh, not bad for shots taken through a moving car window. Love the colours of the sunset.

I managed to get some photos of the sunset yesterday too, which I will upload here in a bit. It was a beautiful sunset and the sky looked lovely.

Thanks for sharing your photos here.

Number three is the one for me, what process are you using to give that effect.

To end my day in Dakar, a few flowery shots.

  1. Bougainvillea on the Slave House
  2. Close up of the flowers
  3. I didn't realise till I saw this that the small white things are the flowers and the coloured bits are the bracts
  4. Doing a good job of covering up the tatty paint work
  5. I love the colours in this - the soft pink and blue of the building with the vibrant magenta of the flowers
  6. Fruits on a baobab tree
  7. Closer up, with a rather nice balcony behind
  8. White bougainvillea on the church railings
  9. Don't know what this is, looks like a pelargonium growing on a tree
  10. No, not a flowery shot, just didn't have room for it yesterday - guard outside a government building

Hiya Dave,

Thanks ... the process I use is to take 3 bracketed RAW exposures, i.e., 1 x normal exposure, 1 x over exposed by 2 stops and 1 x under exposed by 2 stops. Then in Photomatix Pro 3 I generate an HDR image using the 3 exposures and adjust the tones until I am happy with the result and a bit of a tweak in Picassa 3.

Hope this answers your question.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Yes I like number 3 as well Dave.
I don't think our little camera(we both have the same type of camera Dawn - just in case you were wondering) will do RAW images.

Got it, its the HDR process, I have to say I am not a fan of most of the HDR images, some people use them all the time for all of their images, but just now and again I have to admit that the image used was just right for the process, hence number 3 was one such photo. having said that it is just my opinion and wouldn't want to sway anybody from using the process

I'm with you on that Dave, it does nothing for me at all.

It or something very like it seems to be very popular for photos in the Radio Times at the moment, especially for edgy drama series. It's getting to be a cliche.

Today in Pictures, it was bitterly cold up the Coppice today, my ears felt like ice lollies, and the cold wind went straight through my clothes, and before you ask, nutmegs.

1. Setting off, found this, if you know what it is please write the answer on a £5 note and forward to me.
2. Highest point, its all downhill from here, well I thought it was.
3. The Larch have now dropped all their leaves.
4. The waterfall between the top res. and the second.
5. More gentle run off from the second res. that goes past the third and runs into the fourth.
6. Waterfalls into the fourth res.
7. This is after it has left the fourth res. and starts its journey toward Plantation Street.
8. It was at this point I headed back to the Coppice.
9. The light has started to go.
10. At this point it was home time, before I required a torch, and I hadn't got one.

Some great sets of photos to peruse today and all so different.

Dawn I really like that technique -have never seen it before -for me it's number 1 that does it.

Sue's fleurs are lovely, number 1 and 5 are my favourites - 5 has a nice feel to it. That soldier didn't look too happy at having his pic taken though!

Really nice set of shots from Dave again -number 1 is fabulous -you don't miss a trick out on your walks! Love the shots of the stream -you really can almost "see" the water moving. I am saving the last 2 on my computer for nostalgia -a favourite view! :)

Today in Pictures. Today I went anti clockwise for the first time, it made me dizzy.

1. This is the stream that comes off the hills behind Spring Wood(Whalley).
2. This is a Stump Puffball fungi, that has puffed its last.
3. This must be the smallest fungi I have ever found, the stem is no thicker than a needle.
4. All the leaves that were up there, are now down here.
5. That is Hameldon Hill in the distance.
6. The first high bit is Birdy Brow.
7. Right in the middle are these steps and a bit of a wall.
8. Further down the hill, Birdy Brow again.
9. Feather Moss, looking like a tree.
10. To finish off, Dead Mans Fingers.

Well I've been home from hols two weeks now and still only about half way through my photos, so if you're bored, look away now...

After Dakar we went to Banjul, capital of The Gambia, formerly Bathurst under British colonial rule. The guidebooks made it sound like a bit of a dump so we weren't expecting much but it turned out to be a very interesting day, with a very good guide on our excursion. As with Dakar, it's very run down in the wake of decolonisation but the people seem much more laid back and happy - perhaps because the town is only about the size of Accrington rather than a million population.

The ship was making its maiden call at the port so some entertainment had been laid on for us in the shape of dancers and musicians.

  1. Dancers on the quay waiting to perform
  2. More dancers
  3. Military band having a break
  4. A furniture workshop at the market in Banjul
  5. View of the food market
  6. Women selling vegetables
  7. That baby doesn't look very comfy!
  8. The market is right next to the seashore - I bet this is where some of the rubbish goes!
  9. Shop on the main street - I wonder if he supports Coventry City?

They have very basic amenities, perhaps if ships visit more often then the place will improve through tourism.

Not sure that a few cruise passengers will make much difference, they are usually whisked away on bus trips and don't get much chance to put in to the local economy.

To be honest I don't think the climate helps, if I lived in those sort of temperatures and humidity I don't think I'd be inclined to do more than the bare necessity each day, it's very draining.

Anyway, a few more pictures from Banjul.

  1. We saw these plastic kettles everywhere. These were in the grounds of the museum
  2. Sign at the museum. The red dust you see on the ground was an all pervasive feature of town and country
  3. Tribal ritual costumes displayed at the museum
  4. Another sign at the museum - the wording tickled me - that "A patron of the arts" was advertising their contribution to refurbishing the loos!
  5. Man in traditional dress contrasted with tourists getting on bus
  6. Street scene with typical small shops
  7. Another street scene, with a familiar logo!
  8. Arch 22 - from Wikipedia: Arch 22 is a commemorative arch on the road into Banjul in The Gambia. It was built in 1996 to mark the military coup d'etat which overthrew the democratically elected government, and saw the rise to power on 22 July 1994 of President Yahya Jammeh. Due to doubts about the stability of the construction, the arch is currently closed to traffic. [But people are allowed to go up it!]
  9. The elevator to ascend the arch
  10. Goats wandering along the main road, taken from the top of the arch

1. Low shot of the big res at Rishton.
2. Ood a thowt it, a black swan, I'll say that again a black swan, never seen one in the wild before, ever.
3. Just to show you again a low shot and a black swan, it makes you go all giddy.
4. Setting off down to the canal. waiting for the ferry.
5. I think I might be getting obsessed with pylons.
6. In the direction of Blackburn.
7. just a bit further.
8. Time to turn around.
9. On the way up Cut Lane. Its all wood and wires.
10. Last look across the res.

More of my African adventures... after we came down from the arch (see yesterday) we were taken on a drive to show us some more of the surrounding area.

  2. The road out of town, towards the Atlantic beaches
  3. Haircut, Sir?
  4. Craft worker making batik hangings
  5. Small girl snapped from the bus window
  6. And our next stop is - the sacred crocodile pool
  7. Here they are (see also my post in Oo'd a thowt it - yes I did touch one - with guidance!)
  8. This one looked hungry but its mouth stayed in this position all the time we were there

The first two look like a modern city, then you see the others with dirt roads, a place of contrast.

More photos from Banjul - nearly done!

  1. Police cadets working on the road cutting vegetation. The hoarding refers to the president - doesn't seem like a very nice man to me, has some very dodgy ideas... Yahya Jammeh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  2. Crafts for sale on the quayside, possibly made in China? with a ramshackle houseboat in the background
  3. Banjul is on an island and the only way of getting to one side of the river is this rustbucket of a ferry
  4. Or these traditional craft
  5. I wanted a pointy hat like this but there didn't seem to be any on sale
  6. The ferry in midstream, stuffed to capacity
  7. Flock of goats on the ferry
  8. Banjul pilot boat leaving the ship
  9. It was Halloween and we were greeted on board by these weird and wonderful creatures, carved by the crew!

I've got one more pic left and this is actually from today, for a change. I woke up at 6am and looked out of the window. The moon was full, and directly overhead, and the double glazing made two reflections as well. The moonlight was so bright it lit up the cloud below it and the effect was magical.

This is not a brilliant photo but it captures the moment, fortunately the camera was close at hand. The other lights in the photo are the streetlights around the Town Hall opposite.

Some flora and fauna to round off my visit to West Africa. The first five pictures were taken at the crocodile pool.

  1. Vegetation outside the museum
  2. An interesting stem/trunk
  3. The base of the trunk of a silk cotton or kapok tree
  4. Close up of the kapok tree
  5. Bamboo
  6. On the way back to Banjul, don't know what this tree is but it had wonderful coloured leaves
  7. Close up of coloured leaves
  8. Very large spider in enormous web, at the crocodile pool. The web was several feet wide and covered several bushes
  9. On the way back north up the West African coast the ship was followed by lots of birds. I tried to snap them but they kept moving! This is my best shot, looks a bit like a gannet
  10. Some of the birds were very dark in colour, with sharper wings, this is the only photo I have which shows one fairly well

Interesting vegetation, and I bet the locals don't even notice it.

I know they are considered to be rodents and vermin...but I like them, they make me smile with their acrobatics.
Ma puts monkey nuts out for the squirrels and the birds come along and eat them.
