Unfortunately I don't have a Mac pC -my aunt does as she's an artist and I know it can be better for anything art/graphic orientated.

The result of your photo with the cyclists at sunset shows it's a great tool...:)

Today I went to the hosp but they wouldn't let me have my next chemo session as my blood count wasn't right. So we went for a drive to Grange over Sands instead (Richard was supposed to be at work but it was a lovely bright and breezy day so I persuaded him...)

These first ten pics don't even get us to Grange, courtesy of a mid morning fuel stop near Carnforth...

1 Leaving home on a bright day with blue sky
2 Fuel stop for tea and bacon butties in a layby near Carnforth
3 Willow herb on the layby verge
4 The canal at the layby
5 Moorhen family wth three chicks
6 Unfortunately the chicks resemble nothing more than black blobs
7 Canal bridge - there was a heron on the towpath the other side of the bridge but it flew away before I could get a shot
8 Flowers on the bridge
9 View from the bridge - the A6 on the right, layby with butty wagon under the trees, then the canal
10 Morecambe Bay from the bridge - the cables going across the pic and the white pole on far right are on the West Coast main line which is just below the wire fence in the foreground

1 Is known as Woodnook Water, it meets up with Warmden Water
at the corner of Cross St & becomes the Hyndburn.
3 Is the head gear for the sluice gate known as a worm and screw.
Bullough's used it to control the flow from the lodge.

Thanks for that, I often come across streams and bits of water that I dont know the name of, and that info filled in a blank. I have walked most of Hyndburn Brook where it is above ground.

Great insect photos again Dave.

Some days you go out, and don't see a thing, then other days I'm on my knees for most of my walk. Ragwort around here is full of Cinnabar caterpillars at the moment. Will keep an eye out for the Cinnabar Moth as it is very colourful.

We parked near the station when we arrived at Grange over Sands yesterday so here are some photos of that very attractive building.

Featuring ornate cast iron and glass awnings, the buildings date back to 1864 and were designed by Lancaster architect Edward Paley for the Furness Railway Company. The station was extensively restored in the late 1990s, receiving a Heritage Trust Award in 1998.

Can't help you there Kes - didn't get close enough to investigate! I think there may have been other species around but we didn't see any in our brief visit. Have seen mandarins around in other places.

BTW those geese were not in Hyndburn - they're in Grange over Sands on the edge of the Lake District. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about them...

The Bar-headed Goose is often kept in captivity, as it is considered beautiful and breeds readily. Records in Great Britain are frequent, and almost certainly relate to escapes. However, the species has bred on several occasions in recent years and around five pairs were recorded in 2002, the most recent available report of the Rare Birds Breeding Panel. It is possible the species is becoming gradually more established in Great Britain. The bird is sociable and causes no problems for other birds. The "wild" population is believed to be declining in Great Britain due to over-hunting.

Yes I know Grange over Sands we used to go to that lake there with all the ornamental ducks there, that where you took the photos?

I've seen the TV programs about the Himalayas the Bar-headed Goose is the highest flying goose and migrates over the mountains there. There are many in the London parks I've seen some flying.

Also there is a Pelican that can fly in the park but it stays in the park.

2. A view across to Longridge Fell and beyond.
3. I think it might be a Puff ball fungi (will look it up later) but what do you think it looks like!
4. Its nice to sit and take in the view.
5. You might well look a bit sheepish.
6. Thats one rock hard bracket fungi (Ganoderma).
7. Not sure what this is, they are small and the size of a match head.
8. Don't know why, but there are a lot of coins hammered in to the top of this and other felled trees.
9. Dappled shade, and time to stand still for a while.
10. Spore heads of sphagnum moss.

And there it is, a pleasant walk, but a bit muddy underfoot.

The coin tree is a kind of superstition - I've seen the one at Aira Force waterfall near Ullswater.

I've seen the TV programs about the Himalayas the Bar-headed Goose is the highest flying goose and migrates over the mountains there. There are many in the London parks I've seen some flying.

Also there is a Pelican that can fly in the park but it stays in the park.

Yep I took the pics by the park lake. There didn't appear to be much apart from the geese. At first I thought they were grebes, from a distance, you don't often see geese in the water.

Think I've seen the pelican in London, a long time ago!

The first of our end of summer storms has finally arrived. Pretty heavy rain and spectacular thunder and lightening -still threatening now and rumbling in the distance.

A series of shots to show the rain and the aftermath around the farm. Also managed to capture some droplets alla Dave!:Banane30:

Bet you're relieved to have some rain at last - nothing better than a good storm to clear the air. We had a few little rumbles on Wed here but nothing to get excited about.

Last good storm I can remember experiencing was Italy September 2009 on a campsite near La Spezia - will try and post a couple of pics of the aftermath tomorrow, used up today's allocation!

We do get some spectacular storms end of summer and in spring -it's with being near the Alps -sometimes we get massive hailstones too and the temperature will drop 10°C in a few minutes. Great thunder and lightening at the minute -feels sooooo good to be cool again after a few months of just hothothot! :hothothot:

There used to be loads of differnet species of duck at Grange over Sands - we used to go there in the summer, are there still nest boxes in the water on stands for the ducks?

In St James Park there is a flock of those Bar-headed Geese they are always in the water - as are all the other geese. Perhaps you are used to farm geese which don't go in the water, but geese do as a rule take to the water.

There were 4 Pelicans in St James Park - 1 died recently leaving 3. One was found injured down on the coast and was rescued and released in the park.

Yes they've still got the little duck houses in the lake - took a couple of pics but they're not worth posting. Didn't see any ducks but they may have been hiding in a different part of the lake - we didn't go all the way round.

Guess you're right about the geese - on farms there isn't usually any water for them but don't even remember seeing many Canadas in the water - they are the ones normally seen about in parks etc.

It does seem to me to be a bit strange, as the tree stumps were a bit of a hike into the woods, there are about 30 coins so far in the most hammered one, there is another with a handful of coins hammered in ( do they take a hammer with them )

From the Wikipedia site quoted yesterday:

In the glen of the Aira Beck near Aira Force is a wish tree formed from a large fallen tree trunk into which the many visitors hammer coins using stones from nearby.

I've seen this tree, it is so full of coins you can't see the wood.

It doesn't say how many banged their thumbs, or hit the people standing behind. Also why are they small denominations and not pound coins. Why are there no sightings of people doing this, it should be further investigated.

A recent sighting near Bolton Abbey Dave!;)

It's tuppence for luck - pound coins would be hard to get in and you have to bend them once in so they don't come out again.

Apparently I'll now live to be 100!:D

A walk from Newlands to Ard Crag with a stop off in Keswick to see Derwent Water on the way back. A place close to my heart as it's where I was conceived during the freezing winter of '62/'63 on my parents honeymoon -apparently you could skate on the Lake! Hard to imagine...

Finished my daily quota with two nice pics of the dry stone wall just outside the mobile home at Park Foot where I stay on Ullswater.

1 Ard Crag
2 Ascent to Ard Crag from Newlands
3 View across to Hellvellyn from the top
4 View to Derwent Water from the top
5-6 Views of Derwent Water
7-8 Dry stone wall

(As an aside, the story of Mrs Tiggywinkle by Beatrix Potter is set in Newlands and the paintings in the book were all done in the valley.) :thankya:

Last few pics from Grange on Tuesday...

1 My house is over there somewhere - view towards Morecambe in the haze. The two large blocks are the nuclear power stations at Heysham. The grass in the foreground was a beach before the River Kent shifted its course away from the shore
2 View from the promenade looking north
3 Holm Island
4 The promenade looking south. The building on the right is the back of the railway station
5 Bench outside the station. I have seen similar benches in Ulverston
6 Cardoon in the station garden. A relative of thistles and globe artichokes, very decorative
7 Grange hotel stables, now a housing development
8 The Grange hotel, built to cater for tourism after the advent of the railway
