Curiosity sated, thanks for that. :) There are overall on here some very good pictures from various folk, but I find photo's to be in the eye of the beholder, some are, well ..... nah, they're okay but not outstanding, same ol', same ol', then there's those that are absolutely brilliant & really do appeal & you want to see more in that style.

Subjectivity in all things I suppose.

I must remember that in future Susie.
That last post of the one duck was supposed to have another five photos in it, they were rejected and I thought it was because I hadn't resized them.

He sent me to my room once Susie for posting large photos through Photobucket.
Little did he know I have a small fridge there with some bottles of wine in it so I didn't mind.

The ones that were rejected were probably too big Gremlin....you need to get them down to 1024x911...or 800x800 is even better.
Sometimes a percentage reduction will still leave then just a tad too big.
Lovely pics by the way...the park looks a great place to visit.

I'm resizing mine to 400 as the highest dimension, they still come out at around 100Kb off the new camera.

You are calling it petulance, I would say I was pointing out the situation to a new poster, with, I would like to think is a bit of brevity, as I have already adhered to the recommendations of the moderator, this is an indication that I have accepted the imposed rules, and moved on. Although they were imposed after two months on this thread.

I am entitled to my say and my opinion, and to express it on this forum, should Mick the moderator not agree, he can take this up with me, and does not require any imput from yourself.

Some more from my day in Lancaster with the new camera, hope I'm not boring you.

1 An alley off the main street. The dome just visible over the far roof is the top of the Ashton Memorial, high on the edge of town
2 The Town Hall clock, with grey sky
3 The church with the bright yellow doors. Looks even more startling when the middle one is closed too
4 Edward the Seventh post box in the churchyard wall - for you, Dianne
5 The churchyard wall has some lovely stone textures and lots of things growing on it
6 It also has modern additions
7 The church from street level
8 Ferns growing on the churchyard wall - Dave you posted a similar pic yesterday but I beat you to it - took mine Monday!
9 I love the stonework of this building...
10 And its lonely chimney!

Lovely pics.

Thank-you! Having a temp. when it's scorching hot is the pits! (Moan,moan...)

Forgot to mention my attempts at taking photos of the moon - obviously just not my thing, all out of focus and un-impressive. Only result was that I opened the mosquito nets at the window to take them and the house filled with the little blighters -husband was cursing me all evening as they feast on him.
Having blue-blood myself i am never attacked by them (it's either that or they don't like the taste of me):D

Nothing exciting...just same old, same old.
1) Do ducks have cats naps? Don't be silly - they have Duck naps
2) A very dozy BIG bee - at least I hope it was just dozy, and not dying.
3) A Water boatman - looked like it was skating on the surface of the water
4) A duckling.
5) In the Red Corner - well it IS a flyweight contest.(help, I think the olympics are getting to me)
6) Swan - playing hide and seek in the overhanging branches of a tree.

Yes, I like buildings, they're my favourite subject. My dad was an architect and surveyor so it's in the blood, and Lancaster is quite well supplied with good examples.

Think it was bin day in that alley. I've another pic with binman as well.

Actually looking at the pic again, the double yellow lines rather date it!

You'll note there are some bold highlighted sentences I picked out in your text, comments that I'd say are superfluous & not exactly correct in their inference, so I'd deem them petulant. I've no intention of getting into a disputation over the matter with you on this as I do try to get along with the folk on here.

Now then, as far as I'm concerned the matter is at an end, we're entitled to our "opinions" & in this case we're vastly divergent. I won't take up any more valuable space debating the semantics on here & bringing tedium to other folk, so if you'd like to present your case further, (personally I'd prefer to let it lie) we can head on over to the PM system. :)

Yes, the shot really makes your eyes move up towards the light, and the bin gives it some focus. If you look on the RHS I think there were lines there till they crudely covered them up with tarmac. At least you can now park a car on one side!!

Love that totem pole -you're really getting stuck in to your fungi! If you find a puffball in a field, let me have some - really nice eating if they're fresh.

I think they are seeking me out. I can't really say I go looking for them.......they are just there.
Well, Miss BD wanted a picture of a pond skater(to go in 'What I saw on my Holidays' file, for school) I hope the water boatman and the pondskater are either the same or very similar(so that one can be interchanged with the other, without anyone noticing).
We still have butterflies to find.......I have a range of bees...both in size and colours...fat ones and thin ones, furry ones and ones that aren't so furry.....snails too.
These pics will be printed out for her when she goes back to school and she will present them at an achievement assembly - she has to find out about them and write them up....so she will be doing some work.

Holidays...with work attached, but work that sounds like fun.....that is how to dress up learning.

I know where the puff balls grow, and I am waiting for them to come out the ground, I think its a bit early yet for this specific one. Its in the park, and its who gets to it first, me or kids who give them a kick.

I'm not specifically going out to find fungi, I think when you cant look to landscapes you look to the ground, well I do anyway, and the fungi are all over the dead stuff at the moment.

Some days I go out and have waterfalls and vistas up to the armpits, other days I'm overrun with wickthings, and then its all fungi. I think its not what I am looking for, it what finds me.

Is it that you have to see them, or just have photos of them. If you only have to have photos and describe them, please feel free to rummage through my creepy crawly folder on Flickr, and download any that are of use, all of them if you want.
If the rule is that you have to have taken the photo yourself, then can't help on that one, looks like you are going to have to go "Off Road"

Miss BD is supposed to see then herself...well if I take the picture, she has 'seen' them...OK, not in the flesh.....but she has to find out about the things she has seen and write about them.
I think the teachers have given the children this sort of stuff to do to give then some sort of focus....and to get them out of the house and into the fresh air...both admirable intentions. How many of the children will actually do it, is anyone's guess.
She is quite keen and has drawn up a list for herself.
I may use some of your pics from Flickr if we don't see many things...thank you for the very generous offer.
It gets the tinlids interested in nature and the environment around them...no bad thing.

Some more from Lancaster earlier this week:

1 Into the shopping area, with a fine cartouche on the corner
2 Another nice dated gable
3 Pedestrian area
4 A bit further down the street, busy for a Monday afternoon. We didn't go any further than M&S, only headed for their Dine in for £10 offer - very nice - we got two lots!
5 Back up the hill - you can't normally see this junction for cars but they're stopped at the lights to let people go across. On the left, the hospital, with chimney. Middle, the canal. Right, start of the shopping street with big pub on the corner
6 The gatehouse into the old mill comlex where we parked the car
7 Cobbles - with bits in! Newly laid, on a parking area
8 Closeup of the gatehouse, with a fine dated rainwater head
9 My garden gnome carrying the spoils back to the car - he's forgotten his pointy hat

Lovely pics Sue......I love the dated gable and the gate house...full of character......sunshine and blues skies do make them much more attractive too.

Jen your flower pics are beautiful. I spotted the sunset last night but the battery was charging....so I didn't get a pic of that.
I have been out along the canal bank...down through Mercer park and then mhrough the fields to Rishton bottoms.
Himself thought I had fallen down a hole somewhwere. I was out for two and a half hours.

The family of swans which were in residence on the far bank further up the canal, have moved house....they are now quite close to the bridge near the Con club.
Dog walkers are taking no chances. I saw one poor chap lift a big dog up(almost gave himself a hernia) to save having to walk past the male swan(cob) who was taking an aggressive stance to protect the cygnets - even though they are well grown.

1) Swans Head....good name for a pub.
2) Cygnet having a siesta.
3) cygnet stretching its wings.
4) swan family on the canal bank - see the man in the background with the dog...that was one big dog.
5) More of the swans
6) A wildflower....don't know what it is....a ground hugger.
7) Common Burdock (I think).
8) One of yesterdays pics that I have 'fiddled' with.

Thank you Margaret - I do like my buildings... and I was very pleased with my shots with the new camera, mostly taken on the fly with no fiddling.

I love that swan in hiding - and I loved the sleepy duck the other day - I think Gremlin had a pic of the same duck waking up! (yes I know that one was in Nelson...)

Those swans do look a bit scary - when I was out by the canal the other day without my camera a whole family of them with five cygnets came gliding along line astern - looked so serene and beautiful.

Was on to flower no6 straight away - it's self heal, Prunella vulgaris...

Elf Light Essence - SELF HEAL FLOWER ESSENCE

And yes it's a burdock at No7.

Love it Sue....similar yet different.
It is about seeing things with a new eye.....you can have two pictures which are essentially the same...and yet their impact is changed.......by adding colour then removing some of it.

What a great description - I'll have to remember that!

Think it was Davemac's comment a while back that said the horse reminded him of Jimmy Savile that put me off...

Thank you Margaret - I'm amazed I managed to colour it in so accurately - my hands are very shaky today from the steroids - couldn't hold the camera still earlier. Should be OK tomorrow - finished the course now for this fortnight.

The secret is to use the different size brushes....and zoom in for the fiddly bits........better still colourise first and then take it back to Gray Scale with the brushes....still I suppose that is what you did anyway.
It is very effective.
My daughter is in the Isle of Man for a wedding........I have asked her to get me pictures of the Bride and Groom....and the cushion with the wedding rings on...and the Bride and Grooms' hands with the new rings....I am going to employ this technique on those pics and then e-mail them back....for their album....I know that not many couples have an album these days, but this couple are having one.
I'm just sorry I'm not their to be taking pics as well......Miss BD is a bridesmaid.

Yes - you taught me that technique a couple of weeks ago... a good teacher and I learn fast!

Shame you can't be at the wedding to take some nice pics - bet Marnie makes a lovely bridesmaid.

I bet she makes a better Madam.......I can see her being Queen bee tomorrow...telling her Mum how she wants things...what she will wear and what she won't.(for the evening reception that is - she is quite taken with her satin bridesmaid dress.......spaghetti straps and a shrug in case it gets a bit chilly in church.
Spindles has a proper grown up suit, long trousers, a waistcoat and a silver grey tie.......and lovely shiny black shoes.
I wish I could be a fly on the wall.

Not much happened today apart from my sister getting married at Saltaire mill.
Most guest arrived by vintage bus as that was the theme of the wedding.

I got fed up of taking photos of people in clothes from the 40's and 50's, there were about 60 there. I decided to try to be a bit artistic so took some chandeliers from underneath. Then one of the big room where my sister and her husbands band were going to play when we had the champagne toast.
Finally my sister and hew new husband. They teach the old time jive dance as well as having the band.

Lovely Gremlin and a nice change of scene. Looks they had a good time.

I like Saltaire but never been there with my camera.

If that's not much...then I wish 'not much' would happen to me too.
I love your slant on the chandeliers, I like the round lamp in the second from last picture.
Good wishes to the Bride and Groom...they look like a pair of toffs...or 'bobby dazzlers' as my gran used to say.

A few shots along the canal on Hebden Bridge (note sunflowers in shot 4!).

The church in Heptonstall is really eerie - bright blue sky above but still looks spooky, dark and menacing.

Then some views back to Hebden Bridge from Heptonstall and other views which I have chosen for the skies.

Last few pictures from my Lancaster visit on Monday. These are all taken inside the old mill complex opposite the hospital.

1 This reminds me of a French chateau
2 Tree, shadows and bright blue bicycle - for Mrs P.
3 No we don't have a new Pope, nor is the building on fire - it's just a cloud...
4 And another one, over the old warehouses along the canal
5 Can't get away from parked cars
6 Ventilator on top of old building
7 The top of the Town Hall clock peeking cheekily above the warehouses

Yes, Sue...number two pic does it for me......it reminds me of a French Chateau too.
I would have to fiddle with that...not in the colour sense....but to maximise the bike.......I would crop it so that only the tree trunk and the bike were in the picture....you would still have the shadows of the tree so it would be there in essence.
It would be the same photo, but totally different.

I used my quota yesterday so may I show you a few more from my sisters wedding.
The second one is Emma, the fantastic lead singer in their band.

The other photos were taken at Downham today, My wife was feeling up to a ride out so we took a load of bread for the ducks but some inconsiderate dog owner let the doag of the lead and it chased all the ducks away.
The last one was taken from near Downham bridge and is a person on the top of Pendle hill, I only had a 300mm lens on the camera so it's a bit of a long way off and I had no tripod.

I have to agree, all contributers are upping the standard, and locations. Also they are trying different shots.

The Gt Harwood Trail is one I have only found recently, although I have done parts of it from other directions. One being parking on the Gamecock car park, and walking over the Nab into Whalley(this is a two car walk) via Cock Bridge, and Bowley Scout camp.

Margaret - I don't think we have been to Iceland yet... I have posted from Greenland and Norway but so far not from there. However - your wish is my command... here is a selection of pics from our trip in 2007... very touristy, we only had one full day so crammed in all the sights on a bus tour - now I want to go again...

1 The island of Surtsey, created by an undersea eruption in the sixties and a site of scientific interest
2 View over Reykjavik
3 Crater lake
4 A geysir... at Geysir
5 Closer up
6 Closer up still - that water's hot!
7 Quite a spectacle
8 General view of a steaming landscape
9 Going towards Gullfoss waterfall
10 The river and Gullfoss waterfall from above - the water is white because the river has come from the ice cap inland

More tomorrow

It's stunning - all being well one day we would like to take our camper over there for an extended tour. The ferry timetable includes a two day stop in Faeroes as well so that's on the agenda too. When we went on the cruise in 2007 we didn't get to go there as there was a force 8 gale and we headed swiftly on but it did give us a night to explore Reykjavik as well as the whole of the following day to go on the tour.

I think that's exactly the right word for Iceland Margaret - spectacular... but possibly not to everyone's taste. Though they do have warm water for soaking in... but I don't like my skin going all crinkly...

Thanks Davemac for starting this thread, there are some fantastic pictures of places I have never visited, walks around Accrington for example.
The ones in Iceland are really something different, a Country I have never been to and being a big old softy who likes to keep warm I doubt I ever will.

DaveinGermany, you asked about my camera. it's a D5000 Nikon DSLR, I have two lenses a 18 -55 mm and a 55-300mm, both are good Nikon lenses with Vibration reduction.
I have tried picture manipulation but they always seem to come out worse so now I just post them as they came from the SD card.

Margaret liked the chimneys so there is one more photo taken yesterday at Downham, it is one of the few places where TV antenna are not allowed so the chimneys are clear of them.

Mobertol you went to Hebden Bridge, if you had gone a little bit further down the Rochdale canal to Sowerby Bridge you would see the deepest canal lock in England.
I was born and bred in Walsden by the Rochdale canal and can just remember the boats coming through with coal, wool or cotton and the bargees letting us ride between the locks.

And finally I stopped at Spring wood today for an ice cream and managed to snap a squirrel or two.

Thanks Gremlin. Some beautiful pics there.
And Walsden....... it was a place I visited every weekend from being about 12 - 16.
My old auntie used to live at 2 Square Road........her back yard butted the Calder.
I used to get sent for a fish six pennyworth of chips and two dabs every Friday teatime after I had got off the bus......Auntie used to warm the plates, butter the bread and brew a good pot of strong tea.
I was there to help her shop and clean her little house...but I enjoyed myself too.
Thank you for wakening those memories.

Today in Pictures, Hyndburn Brook re-visited.

1. After the floods of a few weeks ago Hyndburn Brook has eroded large areas of its banks and deposited them else-ware, these wood posts were hidden until the water washed the bank away.
2. Possibly a Cinnamon Sedge.
3. Red Bistort, flowering away at the moment.
4. The water is that clean that they are catching Brown Trout around here, I saw one landed as I walked past.
5. Further round the Brook more wooden posts have been revealed.
6. Large deposits of gravel, washed out of the bankings, I think the area was once used as a tip or landfill, as large amounts of red brick are seen, often tumbled smooth, but some say Accrington Nori on them.
7. Two wickthings for the price of one, a shield bug and a mayfly.
8. This is the paint-ball area, from the "Dunk"
9. He might look a bit sheepish, but he is mucky again.
10. Almost home, Riley's Swing Bridge.

With that a three hour walk came to a close.

What worries me is the food up that way - any pointers?

Can't really help you with the food as we were on cruise ships and ate our meals on board. But they sometimes served up fabulous fish and shellfish which they got as they went along. And that day in Iceland when I took the pics we had a catered lunch out which was some of the best salmon I've ever had - straight out of one of those local rivers.

Are you losing any weight with all this walking?

Glad you like the pics, especialy after the exotic locations you have been showing us.

With all the walking, from the waist down I look like an Adonis , but from the waist up a doorknob, but as I am a short person I can walk in the tall grass and not be seen, thats why I spot all the wickthings and fungi. Hi Ho, Hi ho.

Honestly Margaret, they're harmless - but I know you will take a lot of convincing.

I like the name of this one...

Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale Hawthorn Shieldbug
