Re: Today in pictures

I hate having my picture taken........I'm not quite sure why.
I didn't use to mind. I guess it stemmed from having my photo in a cabinet on the Ward......I fought not to have it taken and I was the very last on my ward to have my mugshot done. It somehow made me feel like a criminal - it was the 'forced' element I guess....since then, if I see a camera lens pointing at me I run away. So you won't see much of me on here.
Your pics are lovely Dianne....and I am sure they hold happy memories for you.

They do hold nice memories like you say -as a rule though I'm taking the pictures.:D

Me too... it's just not me - as I think I am - or want to be. Got lots of videos of am dram productions with me in - have never watched them for that reason. But the other half always comes out well in pics - my Dad did too - perhaps we girls are just too self conscious?

Love the dress in that last pic Dianne!

I am usually behind the lens too...just where I like to be.
Here are some of my efforts of today.
I think I have overcome my insectophobia(as long as I can use Zoom that is).
1) Just because it went 'Buzzzzz' doesn't mean it's a bee.
2) but this one is........on privet flowers...lovely to look at but I don't like the smell.
3) A sad looking hound.......on the canal bank.
4) Some very large leaves......they were almost as tall as(or short) as me.....haven't a clue what they are.
Maybe Sue knows...I hope so.

Yep Sue knows - or thinks she does - it's horseradish - grown it myself from time to time...

Wild Food Guide: Horseradish, (Armoracia rusticana), Including Recipes

I think pic 1 is a hoverfly. And I hate the smell of privet flowers too - so sickly!

Love that dog - with its tail hanging straight down! very sad - or maybe that's just its face...:(

I thought it might be horseradish(once saw it on a TV program dedicated to eating from the hedgerows)...might take something to dig up the roots next time I go.
I thought the insect in number 1 was a hoverfly...but only from Dave's pictures. I have never before, in my life, got so close to flying buzzing things.

You'll need a big fork I think- the roots are quite tenacious.

I garden organically and hoverflies are the gardener's friend - clearing up aphids and stuff like that.

I really went out looking for butterflies - part of Marnies summer project is to note down the numbers and types of butterflies we see...didn't see a single one.
Plenty of bees on the privet bush, but no butterflies.

Indulge me a little wishful thinking (this is where I want to be right now!) - a number of images of unphotogenic me -taken mostly by my friend Andrea and husband Dave while on our escapades in the Lakes.

It's 29°C inside -sweltering and I've promised to roast a chicken later for my son when he brings his girlfriend round for dinner -I must be mad!:D

Me dressed for wet weather, drinking Tea at Howtown (note silver service even for walkers!), I actually did come down that scramble (Dave in front to cut out the view as I have terrible vertigo!), stuffing my face in the lakes with a cream scone and eating ice-cream in Edinburgh, with god-daughter Ana by Long Meg, Girls on top of Gowbarrow Fell, on Howtown jetty and by the Ribble with my aunt this April (note gorgeous day in Lancs!) Was too ashamed to put me eating fish'n'chips in Fleetwood (I do nothing but eat it would seem) so have substituted it with me and friends Pia and Mariangela in Cremona for a lit. festival in June!

Thanks for exposing yourself like that, if I may be a bit in

Was at the hosp in Lancaster all morning... then a short walk along the canal and down the hill into town for some shopping.

Although Richard works most of the time at the power station in Heysham the firm he works for has an office in a building right opposite the hospital so we can park there for free which saves on hospital car park fees and it's literally right opposite where I have to go.

There were some fantastic clouds today so quite a few shots of roofscapes and sky - just like when I'm at home really! Also in Lancaster it's difficult to get any shots without traffic in unless you're in the pedestrian area.

I took 95 pics today - should keep me going on here until the end of the week...

1 The building complex where Richard works sometimes - once a cotton mill then Storey's oilcloth works, historically one of Lancaster's main industries. This front bit was a Crimean War barracks later absorbed into the mill. Now marketed as "a dynamic urban village within a thriving, cultural city".

2 Hebe in a hospital flowerbed. There's a bee on there - there were a lot of them about but they wouldn't stay still for me

3 Gable on the hospital

4 The same building as 1 with lots of clouds. The road is the A6

5 Detail of building 1, nice bit of pseudo-Scottish baronial architecture

6 Leafy twigs growing from the trunk of a tree at the hospital, the door on the left is one I have been through many times in the last few months

7 Five ducks going nowhere in a hurry - on the canal at the side of the old mill complex

8 On the canal heading towards the A6 bridge

9 Meadowsweet and foliage by the canal

10 Cobbles on the path leading up to the A6 bridge

More tomorrow

Yes - all just straightforward point and shoot on auto settings, some with zoom. No time for anything else today. The zoom is great - much easier to use than on my old camera - and much more powerful!

Getting on OK with the camera now, I needed a day like today just to take it out and get confident with it.

Thanks Frank.

I just had a go using the fence as a tripod, all I got was a white ball with no definition, wouldnt even appear when I darkened the picture.

Re: Today in pictures

Those pics I have posted are from the fuji600exr....I did take some with the lumix G1...but have reached my upload limit...they do not look any better than those taken with the little fuji....and because I have taken it through glass I have a ghost of the moon too.
I haven't used the tripod for so long....I had quite forgotten how the thing works.......I struggled to angle the top bit with the spirit levels on........I am going to have to use it a bit more to get fluent with it.

I was typing sphagnum, missed the "p" out it became a rude word, ran the spell checker, it didn't point it out, so it must be a word.

I'm not subtle enough for that type of reference

That photo was taken just before setting out on a 2 hour hike in the pouring rain -I convinced friend Andrea to go as I love walking in the rain -it was absolutely tonking down though. Husband Dave had a better idea - watched some TV and then came to the pub in Howtown and sat in the snug having a few pints while he waited for us to arrive!:drink:

Was out early this morning -finished in the office then had a wander to take some shots of how they're up-dating the farm by installing solar panels on the old 1960's buildings which now house all the young livestock -quite a hive of activity. The old asbestos roofs have to be removed first (by law!) and then they are prepared with a new roofing which will finally be covered with the panels -it's a very extensive area. Generators will be installed in the area which housed the old milking parlour and in my old office they are having an operating theatre built and a sanitorium for sick animals. Note how Italian workmen follow health and safety -hard hats, harnesses, protective clothing -not a thing in sight!
1 Removal of asbestos roof (all dressed in specail clothing and masks!)
2 New delivery of solar panels
3 Area already re-roofed
4 Safety a priority when working on a roof.
5 Removal of old parlour -note workman inside bottom right.
6 Shadows cast by un-roofed structure
7 Unloading
8 Hard at work?!
9 Curious heifers
10 Long view back

Operating theatre, is that normal for a farm ?

Not at all -most just operate cows in a stall - hard to keep things sterile though. You'd be surprised how many operations we have during the year - not too many Caesarians luckily but a lot of umbilical hernias in calves, suturing after difficult calvings, dislocations of the abomasum are the most common problem and in the seven years we've been on this farm I've seen two amputations of part of a cows foot. We have also had some torsions of the intestine but generally if the cows get this they go to be butchered - very sad. Occasionally the vet does an autopsy if a cow dies unexpectedly.

It is a very big farm now -milking 400 cows a day -altogether there are about 1100 animals. It's rather like looking after a village full of people but about 40% of them are pregnant all time so it's a lot of work keeping on top them all! In the office I'm in charge of registering births, deaths and marriages;):D

Well, that sounds a complex farm operation in more than the sense of the word, and with all those animals perhaps a lot of photo oportunities at feeding time, perhaps I will lend you my hover boots for an aeriel shot of the whole farm.

After looking at the pictures of the moon I thought I would try to get some shots of it.

I looked every where for it but couldn't see it. I know it was about because Davemac had just posted a photo of it, I also knew where it should be.

After while I took a few snaps of things in the sky and just as I was about to get back to my beer the moon came rolling down the roof of a house a hundred yards away. It must have been hiding behind the chimney stack.

Gremlin, those photos are brilliant, especially the first and last.

Don't think we have a moon in Morecambe any more. Haven't seen it for days. Or should that be nights?

Nice collection, those canal shots look like a cared for stretch of water, with a bit of cash spent on some seats. The seats around here are either at ground level and your legs go out horizontally, or they are overgrown and you get your nuptials nettled.

Today in Pictures, I'm easily distracted.

1. Went for some walking boots, noticed this on the hillside, lost 45 minutes somewhere.
2. When you said, my house would be heated by the sun......I sort of thought........ solar panels,........... not roof tile reduction.
3. Berries on a Berberis.
4. Olympic seat scandal stretches to a friendly at Mercer Park.
5. Common Knapweed, a subject for colour isolation I think.
6. Grass seed head with a wickthing. thats the scientific name for a creepy crawly.
7. wers me dog.
8. Oh there he is.
9. Grass seed head this time bearing pollen......wers me anky.
10. This is the famous frog hopper, it resides in cuckoo spit earlier on in the year.

I came home from Ma's the other day with one of those frog hopper things on my jacket. You know how I said I had cured my insectophobia?
I lied......I nearly set myself on fire trying to get my jacket off......I was that fast...chucked the jacket into the yard...frog hopper bug too.....beat the said jacket with a fly swat.....then got himself to check if the bug had gone. Not so brave when they are on my person.

Well it is in town, and well used and with lots of posh flats close by. And on the LH bank just round the corner at the end of the footbridge is a fantastic pub with lots of seats outside.

Like your shots today esp the grass and knapweed - and Bob of course! Haven't tried any closeup shots yet - have to go looking for some long grass in the cemetery at the back.

I got that it was poisonous off some Site that google threw up...then I checked on Wiki and it gave different info...also another site was talking about using the berries for wine...said it would be good because the berries are acidic.

The pic was taken on the 18th of July(through the back bedroom window)...this information is on the top RH corner of the page with the picture on it....and if you wanted to know more you could check the Exif data......top LH corner where it says actions - there is a drop down box and it gives you a whole barrow load of options....Check Exif Data is one of them.

Just shows you how misleading the internet can be... I typed in "Berberis darwinii poisonous" on Google and this came up as one in the list of answers:

Evergreen Shrubs by Size

davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2466/
*All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested. Medium (less than 10 feet). Darwin Barberry (Berberis darwinii) grows to 6 to 8 feet and needs 4 to 6 feet to spread.

When I went to the site I found that the sentence about being poisonous was the last sentence in the listing for the plant before the berberis.

However I do sometimes wonder if some people take the same attitude to berries that you take to insects - thinking that are all poisonous like you believe all buzzy things bite or sting... Possibly not a bad thing where children are concerned.

Could have been deadly nightshade??

Deadly Nightshade Irrational Geographic

Or early sloes if they were on a tree. These would have bloom like the berberis berries whereas the belladonna ones are very shiny.

I know the berries weren't Deadly Nightshade........they are smaller, rounder and shiny, as you say....my dad used to take us on nature walks when we were children and he showed us belladonna and told us we should never eat it as it is poison.....he also told us that the Pendle witches used it in potions....he told us it was related to potatoes too(a mine of information - it is strange that I still remember al this stuff)

The berries that the children looked at, were olive shaped and about the same size....they had a bloom on them and were quite hard. I will take a little knife next time and cut one open and see what the inside looks like.

I wanted to let the children know that it was never a good idea to eat berries off trees if you don't know what they are........and told them they could get very sick if they ate something that was just for the birds....they wanted to know why the birds don't get sick. I told them...different digestion....and that the birds relied on berries for food through the winter months and that the bushes relid on the birds to transport their seed to other places(in their poo)...the all said eeeeewwwww....in unison.

Quite right Margaret - it's a shame that these days more and more children are losing out on this kind of education as their entertainment needs require video games or expensive visits to theme parks. Then accidents happen. I remember spending an afternoon in Accy Vic when I came off my spacehopper and broke my ankle!:D We had to wait for ages till I was seen because of an emergency, a group of childen had eaten laburnam seeds and were having to have their stomachs pumped!

I'm postponing the rest of my trip around Lancaster today to visit warmer climes, prompted by two of Dianne's posts about her farm and village. In September 2009 we visited Italy in our motorhome, driving down through France, Germany and Switzerland then across the north of Italy and down the Adriatic coast from Ravenna to the Ancona area where we made our base for a few days.

One Sunday afternoon we visited the town of Macerata and they were having a harvest festival parade, with decorated carts and people dressed in rural costumes. We noticed a lot of Indians about but hadn't a clue what they were doing in a small town in Italy. Dianne explained in one of her posts that there is an Indian immigrant population in Italy and many of them are farm workers. I had no idea there was an Asian presence in Italy but the ones we saw in Macerata seemed thoroughly at home there.

The other point she made was about the workmen putting the new roof on her farm buildings appeared to have no regard for health and safety. I happened to pass a building site in Macerata and just for fun took a shot of the regulations notice posted on the fence. As it was Sunday I couldn't tell if any of the rules were being obeyed or flouted!

Anyway this is a record of that Today in pictures - we passed many more in similar small hilltop towns on that trip to Italy and I have hundreds of photos I could bore you with!

1 Our van parked outside the town walls - as it was in many places we visited
2 Decorated cart, one of many
3 They don't just make fast cars!
4 Indian men in the procession
5 Indian women in the procession
6 The band
7 Children on a decorated cart
8 Fine monument, think it's about Italian reunification (Risorgimento)
9 The beginning of the open air service, more Indians in the crowd
10 The building site notice

Macerata is a in a lovely area great to explore in a camer van -off the beaten track for most Brits who stick to Tuscany/Umbria. Lovely little hilltop villages and the area is famous for it's leather goods. Was there for a holiday about 8 years ago. The food is good down there too -especially the Olive all'Ascolano which are large green olives stuffed with meat, breadcrumbed and deep fried -one to try -delicious!:p

The coast isn't as nice though as it's on the Adriatic, apart from a particular area know as the Riviera del Conero which is a Marine national park and very pretty.

Love the building site ntice -if it had been a weekday Sue, I'm sure you'd have seen them all abiding by the rules;):D

ha ha Dianne we stayed on two campsites on the Riviera del Conera, have lots of pics from there! Our goal in that area was a little town called Castelfidardo whose main industry is making accordions and has a squeezebox museum so Richard as keen to see that and visit some makers as his retirement dream is to make squeezeboxes himself. Well every trip has to have a goal doesn't it?

We also visited Loreto and happened to land there on the birthday of the Virgin so there was a lot happening in the town - services, a great market etc - all very interesting. And had some good food in the area - fish on the coast of course.

We travelled down the coast from Ravenna as I'd been wanting to see the mosaics in the churches there for 40 years - and they certainly didn't disappoint (got pics of them too!). We also visited San Marino. And our way home was via Umbria and Tuscany stopping off in Siena and Florence. We wanted to go to San Gimignano to see the towers but couldn't park our camper van closer than about two miles so only saw the skyline from a distance. Same in Assisi so we didn't bother. We have bikes on the back now though - but not sure about those hills!

We did visit a lovely unspoilt Renaissace town whse name escapes me for the minute, will look it up, but everything in miniature, church and palace built by one of the Popes. We managed to park our van really close - and there were some friendly cats too! Stayed in Fiesole not Florence and got the bus there which was better than trying to park! and had a wonderful day including going right up to the top of the Duomo dome. Siena we saw in the evening and it was magical being in the Campo central square (not square but shell shaped!) as the light changed from day to dusk to dark., and seeing the stripy cathedral all lit up. Oh and went to Pisa of course.

So all in all a pretty comprehensive holiday - just got to do the bottom half of the boot now!

Re: Today in pictures

The placename that escaped me earlier is Pienza, beautiful small town, interesting history, stunning location and views. Well worth a visit - but not too many tourists or they'll stop people taking camper vans close to the town! like in Assisi (see previous post). :(

I discovered Nelson park this week, it didn't realize how big and nice it was. There are two halves joined with a tunnel so you don't have to cross the road.
I got my wife's little scooter out of the car boot and she had a run around while I took a few photos.

There are lots of ducks and swimming things to feed and the car park is right along side, it was where we used to park for the Stock cars.

I discovered Nelson park this week,

There are lots of ducks and swimming things to feed and the car park is right along side, it was where we used to park for the Stock cars.

Wonderful photo of the duck -amazing reflections in the water. Karma sent!

Gremlin, first the moon, now some great ducks. Thanks!

Dianne, forgot to say earlier how much I enjoyed your lakes photos, esp Buttermere, remember walking all the way round that a few years ago and we saw a red squirrel!

ha ha Dianne we stayed on two campsites on the Riviera del Conera, have lots of pics from there! Our goal in that area was a little town called Castelfidardo whose main industry is making accordions and has a squeezebox museum so Richard as keen to see that and visit some makers as his retirement dream is to make squeezeboxes himself. Well every trip has to have a goal doesn't it?

Well done for finding a hidden gem! (Won't let me give you Kama!:o)

Hope Richard realises his retirement dream -we know a Frenchman (Bernard) who lives up in a tiny Ialian valley making bagpipes -the Breton type not Scottish...:)

It is a favourite walk -especially for the well-placed ice-cream van half-way round:D

My first love is Ullswater though...

Have just taken some pics of the moon here for Margaret -will have to see how they are -my camera is not that good (excuse of a bad photographer!:o)

I did appreciate your cobbles the other day -don't have enough K to go round...Give, give, give;)

Got to agree on that one, I really liked it. I assume you zoomed in but even then the quality is very good.

Oh I know the Breton bagpipes well... we have two friends who play them - Luciole is French living in Coventry with her English fella who's a morris man and she plays them very well. Trevor is English, lived in France with a succession of French women, then married a German woman half his age and they now have three young girls and live in Sussex - and Trevor is Richard's age! He's more of a squeezeboxer than a bagpiper though he plays them for fun.

Also very good, you can even pick out the droplets on her head in that second one where she's preening, like it. (I'll take quality over quantity every time :))

What's the Camera you're using ?

Well I see this thread has made it to our 100th page, well done to all the posters for making it so enjoyable, and a big thank you to Davemac for starting it and helping to keep it going. We've seen a lot of pictures, had some good conversations and learnt a lot. What more could one ask?

Once again I came on to post my pictures, and once again have been distracted looking at pictures from far and wide, and thanks Susie for those kind words.

To sort of emphasise the type of thread we now have, someone in Morecambe posting pictures about Italy, someone in Italy posting about the Lake District, a visit to Nelson from Accrington, and me later "up the cut", we have been on trains, buses, cars, weve also been shopping in far away places, all this is what keeps us all coming back for more.

When I started this thread in May I wasn't sure if it would last, as the interest has to come from a variety of pictures posted.
I have to say it has passed my expectations to infinity and beyond, and along the way I like to think that I have made some friends, and in a small way we have all had a smile put on our faces and a song in our hearts. Also I hope after posting this there wont be a dry seat in the house.

I must get my pics sorted now as I cant post after 10 o'clock its a condition of my tag.

Thanks again to everyone for "getting stuck in " and keep it up.

Dave, It's a Nikon 5000. The photos are straight off the camera, no manipulation apart from reducing the size by 2O%.
