Today in Pictures, an appointment for "She who must be obeyed" at the Pals centre meant a walk around Platts Lodge for todays expedition.
1. It was raining at this point. 2. Woodnook Water as it passes the lodge. 3. And then whizzes past the Pals Centre. 4. The last time I was here there was buckets full of the caterpillar of the Cinnabar Moth. This was the only one I could find. 5.The factory behind used to be the toffee factory I think. 6. Giant Reed growing in the run off pond. 7. Run off pond from the other end. 8. Looking across the lodge from the Ormerod Street end. 9. It took me ages to buff up this greenbottle so you could see your face, actually if you look closely you can see my camera. 10. Still at the Ormerod Street end, then it was back to the car. |

Today in Pictures, started on the canal, headed for the vets, and ended in Padiham.
1. There was a lot of these fluttering about today, the Speckled Wood Butterfly. 2. There was a bit of a drop in temperature today, the leaves are turning, and the buttercups that Bob bobbed about in have long gone. 3. Heading home past the colliery memorial. Then the vets for a booster jab, I took Bob for company. 4. On the way back, saw a park in Padiham ( Memorial ), it was a bit like the tardis, it opened up behind the wall to a park, a wooded walk, a river, and a greenway that took us to Simonstone. 5. At this point I was not sure where we were going, but using the "I wonder where that goes " principal we headed that way, or was it the other way. 6. Ended up on the Greenway, it looks like it used to be a railway. 7. After a long walk we approached Simonstone, I never knew there was a bridge here, and I have driven over it scores of times. 8. Even walking on tarmac he gets wet feet. 9. After heading back, we veered left into the park, don't know what this is about, but its different. 10. Back up through the park, and off to find the car. |

some more from my wanderings.
1) The Mosaic in the Square at Lytham. 2) A little boat at anchor in Lytham. 3) Street art along the prom at Cleveleys........birds roosting on the sculpture. Not a fan of street art, but I liked this 4) Looking down the main drive to the War Memorial in Ashton Park. 5) The Pavilion in Ashton Park......the food in there was delicious. 6) Dancing in the Park - youngsters dancing to the music from the open air Art/ Music festival. 7) One of the dancers from the festival........I always thought that Morris dancing was a man's domain, but the ladies did a damn fine Morris dance. |

As to the chess players they never noticed me taking their pics -far too engrossed in the game. Their choice, to sit on the stones steps -note traditional benches in the background with wooden seats! I love the life in Italian squares - behind the players was a little fish stall in the corner and everyone is just going about their business... |

Today to counteract Di's sunny scenes and Margaret's lovely holiday pics, some churches from northern latitudes.
1 Mosfellskirkja church near Reykjavik, Iceland. Nobel Prize winning author Halldór Laxness lived in the Mosfellsdalur valley. The farm on which he was raised now is the site of this church built in 1965 2 The church at Longyearbyen on the Norwegian island of Spitzbergen in the Svalbard archipelago 3 The Russian orthodox chapel in the Russian mining settlement of Barentsburg on Spitzbergen 4 Methodist church in Tromso, Norway 5 Tromsdalen Church (Tromsdalen Kirke), in Tromso, also known as the Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965. The church is actually a parish church and not, in fact, a cathedral 6 Close up of the church above from across the water 7 Borge church, Lofoten Islands, Norway. The church was built to echo the slope of the nearby mountain 8 Closeup of the church 9 Wooden Stave church ´Busknes Kirke´, Gravdal, Lofoten Islands, taken from the cruise ship as we were leaving the island. Looks like a pagoda! |

A day out in Bardolino - some lovely features in the buildings but it was heaving with folk, really hot and a bit to touristy for my liking. Enjoyed the boat trip getting there though it was too windy to take any pics out on the lake...

Ooh, just lovely. I would be running around with my camera, not knowing quite what to snap first. I don't mind touristy...especially when there are such lovely buildings and sights to capture.

No Dianne.......I don't drive him mad with taking pictures.......I leave him at home.
I get giddy with delight when I visit somewhere new........I sometimes forget to eat, so wrapped up am I in the pursuit of a 'good frame'....a different angle. What does drive him mad is when I secrete myself in the back bedroom looking through the pics...playing with them, editing them, posting them. This activity costs practically nothing, and gives me hours of pleasure.......I don't know how he would react if I took up Bingo, or carousing in the local ale houses. :D:D |

Some more churches from above the Arctic Circle
1 Ilulissat, Greenland, with our cruise ship out at sea 2 Sisimiut, Greenland, town established in 1764. The new church, 1926, with people gathering outside the church on the right, for a funeral 3 Steps up to the church 4 The people gathering. Some are in national dress, which is a white cotton anorak for the men and gaily coloured top and white leggings and boots for the women 5 Little girl and woman in national dress. There were lots of brightly coloured flowers, all of them artificial 6 The funeral procession wended its way through town and ended up at the cemetery 7 The old church at Sisimiut, built 1775, with entrance arch made from the jawbone of a whale. New church is above on the right 8 Reconstructed Viking church, Brattahlid, Greenland 9 Entrance and bell cote of the Viking church with reconstructed Viking guide 10 The new church at Brattahlid, with remains of a Viking house in the foreground |

What I do find is that sometimes I wish I didn't have the camera as it can get in the way of actually enjoying a place - but I keep taking pictures! But they are always secondary to my exploration, usually just snapshots, not considered pictures. Another thing I've found is, especially when we went to Italy in 2009, is that sometimes you can do too much research on the internet. We went to several places and I felt as though I'd been there already as I'd read so much about them. So now I try not to delve too deeply before I go so there is some aspect of discovery when I get there. |

I think I do consider my pictures more now that I used to....and certainly if the visit is a return one. I frequently look at my pictures.....especially in winter when the days are a bit grey and dismal. It allows me to re-live the visits I have made. As for internet research....I just look at places that I might like to visit. Just to get a 'flavour' of the place...and I look at maps of how to get where I want to go. Strangely, once I have looked at a map I rarely need to refer to it again......I can picture it in my head(this only refers to street maps). |

And I have to have a street map if I'm in a new place - then I don't have to worry about getting lost. And like you, I can usually carry it in my head. |

Today in Pictures, another wet day, but we still managed to yomp from Mill Lane to Martholm Lane along the woodland project.
1. Here we go. 2. through to 7. I have never found as many different fungi in one outing before, the last one reminds me of Mick Jagger. 8. Our destination, its fenced off, so not able to walk along the top. 9. From t'other side. 10. And at this point we set off back, it is still raining. |

I helped fence the Read side off when I worked on the farm at the other end. The old track bed was bought by the farmer many years ago and is private land. It helps to stop the robbers coming onto the caravan park when it is closed and stealing. I will have a look through my collection of old photos and see if I can find any taken on the viaduct. I know they are a few years old and not "today in pictured" which your thread is about but you may find them interesting. |

Last lot of churches today, from warmer climes - plus some prickly plants.
1 Siena cathedral at dusk 2 Church of St Honore, the patron saint of bakers, Amiens, France. Taken from the camper van window - we were looking for the cathedral but found this instead 3 Modern church bell tower, somewhere near Calais 4 St Colman's RC cathedral, Cobh, Ireland. On a hill, dominating the town 5 Cobh again, with palm trees - giving a theme for the next few pictures - palms and prickly things in pots... the rest are in Italy 6 Entrance to the University botanical gardens (1806), Urbino 7 Main square, Macerata 8 Osimo cathedral 9 Osimo, a road around the hilltop town, with great views 10 On the coast road, somewhere north of Pisa |
Re: Today in pictures
Am a bit behind on this thread -just saw Dave's shots from yesterday's walk -you could compile a guide for funghi! They all have a really autumny flavour -my favourite season of the year -look forward to seeing some beautifully coloured trees, then fallen leaves and conkers soon!
Compliments to Kestrel for the wildlife shots especially the owls and the mandarin drake in number 3. I am rotten at taking live things -they move too quickly for me! I know your bent is architecture Sue - all these churches - did you go inside any of them? I am not religious but love going inside churches for the art, history, the windows and general feeling of quiet. They are nice and cool in the summer too when it's burning hot outside here! |

Last set of photos from my hols on Garda - all taken around the hotel and the village of Gargnano.
1-5 Hotel and gardens 6 Shrine in Villa di Gargnano 7 Port in Villa di Gargnano 8 Yacht on Garda -taken from terrace of San Tommaso 9 Villa Feltrinelli taken from beach in Gargnano 10 Me -the only photo from this holiday! Villa Feltrinelli is where Mussolini and his family lived from '43-45 during the Republic of Salň. His lover, 30yrs his junior, Claretta Petacchi was installed in Villa Flaminia in Gardone Riviera just down the lake -they were eventually assasinated together while trying to escape the country. Palazzo Feltrinelli in the center of Gargnano was where the "puppet" government met -it now belongs to the Uni. of Milan and is used for conferences. The Hotel where I stayed was also requisitioned and housed some of Mussolini's ministers. |

In this country, yes we do normally go inside and look at it, from an archaelogical point of view if you like as we share that interest and met on an archaeological site. We like to see how a building evolved and developed. Intensely practical and not very spiritual if at all - that's us! We also like churchyards. |
Re: Today in pictures
I'm not religious, but I do like going into churches. I love the architecture, but I can't explain quite why.
I once went into Canterbury Cathedral and there was a service in progress with a choir, it moved me to tears.....it was really beautiful how the voices soared. I love the old wood, and the stones inside churches too. I don't mind the candles. Ma usually gets me to light one for Pa and anyone else she thinks might benefit from being 'thought about'. By the way,Both of you should be commended for your lovely pics. I really enjoyed browsing them |
Re: Today in pictures
Quote:
I also love the acoustics in cathedrals -the sound you get there is unique and they were built deliberately to enhance the feeling of being close to God - the voices soaring upwards and also your eye drawn up towards heaven. My two favourites are York cathedral and Chatres in France which has the best stained glass I've ever seen. Cremona cathedral has some brilliant stone carving from the 1400's -amazingly detailed and delicate -i sometimes wonder if we "modern" humans would ever be capable of building something similar using the materials and equipment they had back then...I somehow doubt it! |

Lovely set of pictures today, a visit to churches on foreign shores shows the care in construction, the Italy shots make me want to paddle around with my knotted hankie on. Rob you are showing a change in your composition, the pebbles and sea shots are very good, the water shape in number 6 makes you hear the sea on pebbles.

Look at me fungi boy, ( well pensioner really ) strikes again. 4. I can't pass a fungi without dropping to my knees and taking a snap, I'm banned from Asda, people kept tripping over me. 5. Now you asked about the tawny owl photo - the bird was quite easy to see as it's young were sitting in the open and it was flying around a bit even though it was broad daylight, if you look at it's beak closely you'll see it has a mouse in it - also there were no leaves on the tree as they breed quite early on before the leaves get growing properly. ;) |

Some towers today...
1 Old Town Hall, Cobh, Ireland. Up for sale when this was taken in 2007, now a Chinese restaurant 2 Concrete tower, Harwich harbour - no idea of its function, if any... 3 Perch Rock lighthouse, New Brighton, during the Tall Ships Race from Liverpool, 2008 4 Arts Tower, Sheffield University, built 1966, listed grade II*. The tallest university building in the country, with one of the few surviving paternoster lifts. When first built the entrance was across a pool with fountains - this had to be filled in because the winds around the base of the tower meant people got soaked going in Paternoster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 5 and 6 Balkerne water tower, Colchester, opened 1883, taken out of use 1987. Over a million bricks were used in its construction. Nicknamed Jumbo after the circus elephant of the time and because it took as long to build as the gestation of an elephant.
