Night and day,
Many years ago I got the job of taking all the gas oil from Barrow power station when it closed down to Padiham and took the chimney photo.

Last night I looked out and saw the moon just about to hide behind a cloud, I just had time to catch a quick photo.

I can never get anything that resembles a moon, I have had a couple of light streaks, and a couple that look like a dim light bulb, but nothing that resembles the moon.

Today in Pictures, on a day you wouldn't put a dog out, I took a dog out.

1. After a tramp around for a few "signs of life" I ended up down Lower Barnes Street.
2. Dancing around in the woods I came across the small fungi ( I think ) it was dark due to the day, so its not the best shot.
3. These could do with a wash.
4. Last one before heading up the hill.
5. Rain on a slate roof on a wet Sunday afternoon.
6. A quick look up a back passage.
7. I went back through the park, so checked these out to see how they mature.
8. I went all giddy with this one in All Saints Church, its a giant polypore.
9. There were three huge ones, and a small one. You get a few droplets for the same price.
10. Along the canal and back home for a dog biscuit, and Bob will have one as well.

Did anyone explain why the deletion occurred, I think it is very unfair on ghosts, it could even be described as racist, even ghostaphobic, or perhaps the Mod was just scared of ghosts. I suppose we should watch this post to see if it gets the chop, or spirited away

Today in Pictures, sort of a ricochet walk.

1. After looking for the last two "signs of life" plaques and finding them missing, I found myself at the bottom of Lower Barnes Street, so I shot in the woods to take a couple of photos that failed me yesterday. A set of Variable Oysterling Fungi.
2. Followed by a Candlesnuff Fungus.
3. Setting off to Gt Harwood over the footpath I found a Jelly Ear Fungi.
4.Looking across the fields I wondered if I should retreat, but didn't.
5.Finding myself in Tottleworth, this is looking over to Hapton Quarry.
6. Looking toward Rishton.
7. Then looking at the turbines.
8. Before leaving Tottleworth, this is looking over the Rishton Dip toward Hameldon.
9.Looking toward the trees that follow Hyndburn Brook in the dip.
10. Looking over the gate into Dunkenhalgh Land.

No buzzards, but plenty of what I think are kestrels, they hover before dropping on prey.

Yes they are kestrels - I have seen a buzzard in that valley below Windy Harbour - the farmer there used to be a nut and would come out in his jeep if he saw you tresspass and chase you off his land. I think the farm may now be residential flats?

Today in Pictures, a busy day, but managed a yomp in the middle.

1. final burst of flowers before the frost arrives, just over the swing bridge at Church.
2. These Candlesnuff Fungi are everywhere at the moment, small and easily missed.
3. Fungi, but with a slug creeping up.
4. I know, they are bricks, but I think old bricks?
5. This looks like a slime mould just bursting from under the bark of a dead tree.
6. Moo Cows, close to Hyndburn Brook on the path that heads to Rishton Dip.
7. Hyndburn Brook looking towards the motorway.
8. I wondered were the weir was, well you would wouldn't you.
9. Looking back on the path travelled before emerging at Rishton Dip.
10. Taken from the main road looking into the Dunkenhalgh land.

These are not very good photos but they do contain a buzzard and a few red kites, so I was told when I took them. We rented a nice lodge on a farm at Rhyader in Welshland and the farmer fed the birds every day.

Russell, you're too modest, those photos are fine! The birds must have been quite a sight. W used to have a pair of buzzards around when we lived in the Wiltshire countryside, but they were always so high in the sky so didn't get any photos of them.

Half past three every day the birds start arrive and hover about until the farmer arrives with his tractor, then he throws the meat about and the skies fill with Red Kites.

The crows and buzzards manage to get good belly full.

The farmer has built a few hides just below the place where he throws the meat and charges four quids entrance to the farm area. We got a free look in because we had rented his lodge for the week.

We went in April and I was very surprised how nice the weather was, you can see by the photos how sunny it was.
The pub down the lane was not bad for a meal or a pint but there wasn't a lot else to do in the area for people like me who is not into walking or hill climbing, it's the age thing.
We had a look around the reservoirs and the visitors centre there, the little red brick building in the farmers field was an access point for the underground tunnel which takes water to Birmingham, we got a chance to see in it when the inspector came.

I never knew what they looked like, now I do, the farmer has to be commended for his attitude to predator birds. Nice shots as well, I don't think there are any of those birds around here, but I could be wrong.

Today in Pictures. A quick walk, but just as dirty as a long walk.

1. Sun on my face, but mud on my flip flops.
2. Its a Split Porecrust fungi, but I think it sounds like a pie, I would eat one.
3. The leaves are starting to fall.
4. Came across two Pine tree stumps and these were feeding off the dead roots, Sulphur Tuft fungi.
5. Stood back for a better look.
6. Looking from inside the wood to the outside, this area was pine and Larch trees.
7. This is one of those fungi that are bursting out all over the place at the moment, Jelly Ear. Or it could be the arm of an Octopus, perhaps not.
8. This one is so small its almost microscopic, its a good job I had my Fungi Detector switched on.
9. I think this is a slime mould, it appears to be oozing out from under the bark.
10. Last shot before heading back to the car, and then shopping , whoopee.

Must put on my shopping list, some batteries for my fungal detector, it has gone off that many times this week the batteries are flat.

The places I go are so muddy, steep, wet, remote, smelly, that I am usually a man outstanding in his field, or river or mud or manure. plus there is not mushroom for visitors.

Trying to work out where that is exactly? St Mary's is the church by the river. Are the woods you refer to running down partly by a valley with stream in it? I think it's all changed since I was up there - I know lot of the area that was farm land and fields around Altham Lane is now an industrial estate and residential, from the look of the map.

Best way to tell you where it is, is first find the Woodlands Home for the elderly in Clayton le Moors, which is situated at the crossroads of Whalley Road and Sparth Road/Warwick Ave. To the rear of the home is a wooded area that goes through to Bell Lane, going up Bell Lane brings you out on Burnley Road and here is where you will find the burial ground.

If you have Google Earth, put in postcode BB5 5RW, you will fly to the start point.

hi all,
after not getting out much recently, i decided i wanted some nikwax, ready for the coming winter, £3 for a wash in one at winfields, thought about driving up there, but then i would have bought something else just to justify the drive, so decided to have a walk, wasnt a proper outing, so thought i would take my compact out, and leave the dslr at home.

walk route, church, tesco in town, factory bottoms, and the hyndburn greenway, upto rising bridge, when i got there decided to walk via great hambledon, then the coppice, then back home.

whilst i was out thought i would try out the panoramic on iPhone, and also a HDR app for iPhone

decided i dont like the compact, and the dslr will have to come everywhere, not enough setting for me to play with and the pics seem.....flat, but here are some piccies i took, critique at will
thanks

Today in Pictures, The walks at present are mucked up with fungi, so many I couldn't post them all. So adjusting the shoulder straps on my fungi detector, and putting the aerial to its full 2 meters, with a full set of batteries, away we went.

1. You wouldn't want this ramming up your hooter.
2. As we emerged from the Pine forest we spied Pendle Hill.
3. And around the bottom of Dean Clough Reservoir.
4. Going up the far side of the res the sound of rushing water provoked a mooch about, this is usually a little stream.
5. From this point the detectors klaxon kept going off. slime mould.
6. Never seen this before, they were all a pastel purple colour, and a large carpet of them.
7. Growing on the horizontal body of a dead tree.
8. Another horizontal tree.
9. There are a lot of horizontal trees in this area.
10. Back in the pine forest now, and heading to the car, you get a free wickthing with this snap.

Don't rule out the fungi detector, with new batteries. The ones posted were only a small selection of the ones I found due to posting restrictions, some I've never come across before, but will have to post those on flickr, eventually. I am about 5 days behind with those postings, so the word eventually is a bit elastic.

To say its a good year for fungapuses does not do it justice, I have not come across the vast number of carpets of the stuff before. I never set of to be fungiman, but it appears to have taken over, I am starting to notice the almost microscopic stuff now.

Today in Pictures, slightly different posting today, didn't expect to see anything today, as it was persistently precipitating, and it was a short walk as town beckoned. However on the short walk between the Ash Pad and Blackburn Road, through the Petre Industrial estate, these were all over the place, so without numbers, the fungarama.

Dave I reckon they wait for you coming, then spring up! And I see from pic 4 you've got Bob trained to sit and wait for you to get your shot!

The area I was walking through has a regular mowing regime, so was surprised at the different types springing up.
Yes, when I stop to have a mooch, he assumes the position without prompting, it must be the persistent regularity that it happens, plus its the embarrassment that he gets when I am on my hands and knees.

You can tell em by the nipple on the top - if you'll pardon the expression.

Ok I just wonder out of interest if you come across any, they like garden lawns and sports fields, open fields often with sheep or horses. Don't pick any it's illegal. They do have a nipple on the top, they are very distinctive once you know what your looking for.

I sort of, have seen them, when I worked in Haworth Park, the pitch and Put course was covered in these mushrooms that a lot of students used to come and pick them, now I know why.

I think you should plant it at the bottom of the garden, feed it, water it, and in 50 years you might have some conkers on it.

Today in Pictures, I fell down a ditch, and slide on my posterior down a muddy slope so you don't have too.

1. I had only just parked the car at the top of Plantation Street, took five paces and found this, and yes, it is Giant Polypore.
2. On the same stump a Candlesnuff Fungi.
3. Then up the yellow brick road, we are not in Kansas now Toto.
4. Never saw this before, a mental note to return and mooch more around here.
5. Passing the Coppice as we ascended.
6. Looking back to the reservoirs.
7. Looking over to the windtwistles, with a Kestrel in hover mode.
8. Kings Highway, a short pause whilst I re-inflate my lungs.
9. Spotted this as we mooched around what used to be "Gamblers Caves" now just a hole in the ground.
10. This is a new one to me, or someone has dropped a surgical glove

I wonder if I was taking my snaps when you went along Grane Road, I think a lot of people never thought they would be so visible when planning permission was granted, they are visible from everywhere.

Re: Today in pictures

I took my wife for a little ride over Grane road yesterday and saw the wind turbines, they certainly are close to the road.
There is a nice little picnic area on the left going towards Haslingden where we stopped for an ice cream and I decided to take a few photos.
That's when I realised I had left my camera bag with camera, lenses and attachments on my drive when I helped my wife into the car.
Luckily we are at the end of a small cul de sac and the gear was still there and dry when we returned.
I am one lucky old codger.
The camera is a week old Nikon D3200 24 mps and it was to be its first outing.
The lenses are worth a few quids as well.

You certainly are! Still, it was a nice day for a ride out.

New camera eh? Look forward to seeing some shots when you remember to take it with you! Wonder if we passed each other on our trips yesterday?

Possibly, we went both ways over Grane road to the picnic area.
We were there about 3PM.
We intended going to the Helmshore textile museum butmy wife didn't want to get out of the car so that's when we decided on ice cream at the picnic area.
They do full breakfasts all day if you want one.
It's our first time there but no doubt we will go again.
I was amazed at the views From the top of Grane road, I can't remember going over before, if I ever did. There should be a car park with viewing area.

I said in an earlier post in reply to Dave we went south at about 12.30 and back about 5pm so you were there in the middle of that. Yes, the view on the way back looking over Blackburn and beyond to the Fylde is quite stunning.

I'd never been over that road till my brother moved to Belthorn about ten years ago. He can see that view from his house.

BTW did you see my reply to your query about my brother in the CB thread a few days ago?

We didn't go out today but I wanted to try out the new camera.
I part exchanged the old camera body and the macro lens for the new camera body.
I had got fed up with the macro lens very soon after I bought it.
Anyway I took a few photos in my garden using a 300mm lens and standing four feet from the subject. I think I have got better results than I did with the macro lens.
The photos are straight off the card, no tweaking. ISO 800 f 5.6 1/4 second, manual focus, steady hand.
I am happy with my first pictures with the camera and a new (to me) way of taking small objects.

As long as it doesn't involve walking Dave I will take pictures of anything.
I will leave that to you.
By using the long lens instead of the macro I don't have to struggle to get up again after the shot.

Most photos are for my own enjoyment but a few of my transport photos have made it into magazines. My first was a drying frame for a cotton mill I helped to make in 1962.

Today in Picture, a more horizontal perambulation today, the canal with a bit of mooching.

1.Looking left as we head for Fosters Swing Bridge.
2. And here it is.
3. Snowberry, or something that requires cream rubbing on it.
4. A quarter of the way around and a bath required already.
5. A beech leaf turning brown for the winter, with woody nightshade berries.
6. Mooching around S. Mary's burial ground, I've got fungi coming out of my ears. Plus a wickthing for the same price.
7. Peak-a-boo.
8. A bunch of brown ones.
9. I went all dizzy when I found these, a giant one and many twee ones.
10. Looking from St Mary's over to Pendle.

With that my allocation has run out, so will not be able to show you the photo I got of a wild unicorn, or the griffin carrying off a sheep, perhaps tomorrow.

1-3 are in the area of Piazza Santo Stefano (my favourite place in Bologna)
4-7 the area of Porta Nova
8-10 Piazza Maggiore - fireworks at night for the town's Festa of San Petronius

I think if you view the thread from the very start, most areas of town have been covered, some you probably didn't know about, well I didn't until I walked them. And to answer the mushroom hunt, I did find one, but it was such a poor specimen I didn't want to use it with posting restrictions, so will put that on the back burner for now.

It's nice to see food on open display like that rather than packaged to death in a supermarket. Went to Bury market on Sat for the first time and I felt the same there - black puddings, cheese, pies, meat and fish all there for you to look at and select and be served by a human...

Is that your aunt in pic 3??
