Re: Today in pictures
Bluebells have a 'green' smell to them.
We were never allowed to bring them in the house. If we picked them they had to stay on the window ledge outside...usually in a milk bottle(milk bottles of that era had wide necks and cardboard tops). Ma said they were bad luck in the house. |

Everything is very green hereabouts - 10 days makes a big difference. Just had a stroll up the lane and shot some of the flowers that are out. The first one must be related to the bean family I think. The rowan are flowering and elder is in full bloom. You can see why the poppy was chosen as a WW1 symbol -fallen petals just like spots of blood in the grass. Some winter wheat has grown up spontaneously in a clump between two maize fields and finally my spruced up garden area. New bright cushions and 2 new miniature roses, yellow and pink, central by the white geranium. My son has done a good job of keeping things watered while I was away. Just about to sit out for my afternoon tea. :)

Today in Pictures........today I wet my knickers.
1.Here I am, hands and knees in a graveyard, sniffing flowers. 2. All my brothers and sisters have gone now. 3. Hello daisy. 4. Still sniffing, have to say not much scent with the closed ones, however the open bells have a slight smell, but only slight of Apples, but if I snap a leaf off the sap does have an earthy smell as Mrs P. reported. So if picked I think this is the dominant smell, but if you lie on the floor sniffing them, people stare at you. 5. Mayflower with wickthings. 6. Heading into the Millennium Woods, a view of Pendle. 7. A lush area now, but it has started spitting. 8. That is the area I am going, but it is now raining, and heavily. 9. A bug on a mountain Ash, the flowers look identical to Hawthorn, and early cherry blossom. 10. The last shot before getting in the car, everything is now wet as I didn't expect it to rain so am not in waterproofs. |

A mixed bag of shots here, mostly from my trip to the Ripley's Aquarium in downtown Toronto. I went there dreading it, having heard horror stories of the crowds. But I was proved wrong, and enjoyed myself immensely! There are also a couple of shots to prove that Spring has arrived, and the work that started today on my patio. Lots of digging, not me doing it happily!
1. Foggy - outside the aquarium. 2. Anemones - flowers with no scent that I could discern. 3. A turtle! And a shark. I was so excited my camera hand was shaking. 4. Sawfish. 5. Beauty and the Beast. 6. Diver and a hungry stingray. 7. Jelly (not colour enhances - the background lights changed colour so we could see them better) 8. Dragon Fish. 9. Spring morning - yes that is a hyacinth in bloom! 10. Patio excavation in preparation for new pavers. |

Today in Pictures, a wet walk in the Woodlands.
1. A Green Veined Butterfly on a Spanish Bluebell, bigger and not as arched as the native variety, they cross pollinate and the pink ones are the result. 2. Its very green now. 3. There were no leaves on the trees on my last visit. 4. Is someone watching me ! 5. The channelled stream runs through the centre of the site. 6. The native Bluebell. 7. Red Campion. 8. A drift of London Pride, they can only be here after someone dug them up from their garden and dumped the spoil here, a common way cultivated plants escape into the wild. 9. Ramsons, (wild garlic) they smell of kebabs with garlic sauce on. 10. Not a common site, Spanish Bluebells, with the cross bred pink variety, and the not so common white variety, plus the Green Veined Butterfly is in the picture. |

that might be an idea .... do you think bob would mind me walking at the side of him dave? :D
Margaret the blossom trees are in my neighbours garden ... and theyre lovely she has 2 of them though the blossom is starting to fall off them now ... |
Re: Today in pictures
Jen...Bob is the most amicable dog you could ever meet...I am sure he wouldn't mind.
Yes, the trees look lovely when full of blossom but they make a heck of a mess when the blossom falls....but it is a clean mess. |

Today in Pictures. another of those moist moments.
1. Growing vertically, Fairy Foxglove(summer starwort) and Maidenhair Spleenwort (fern) on the wall that used to be the perimeter of the colliery. 2. As its wet and warm the smell is heady, its a sweet earthy perfumy smell. (hawthorn) 3. The invasion into the wild continues, one day these (Spanish Bluebells) will swamp out the native variety by cross pollinating with them and creating a new variety that will overgrow and drive them into small pockets. 4. I call this Fern on a rock.......because its a fern.........on a rock......actually its one of those random remains of the coal mine that was worked here. 5. Both slopes down to the stream are bathed in the blue with dashes of white from the Ramsons. 6. The other slope down to the stream. 7. Ramsons on the waters edge. 8. Looking back down the length of the site. 9. Here we have a shrub doing an impression of a motorbike........Broom...broom broom broom. 10. Here we are at that point where its hard to find a bit that is still dry, and keep my tackle dry. |

Had a rather busy few days leading to a sad moment with a poor little orphaned kitten I tried to save - unfortunately he didn't make it. To cheer me up husband took me out into town yesterday evening where an International market was on through the streets -very colourful -lots of pics taken but they'll be for later as they'll take some sorting.
This aft I went for a short walk after a barbecue with friends and took a few pics which are more variations on the theme of Green! Lots of lovely grasses around at the moment and the winter wheat is ripening -the rapeseed field has passed flowering and there are lots of fluffy poplar seeds in the air -drifts of them make it look like it's been snowing! |
Re: Today in pictures
Great pics , looks like you left our rain with us.

Re: Today in pictures

The first set of 10 photos showing the International market which was on through the streets of Cremona at the weekend. Lots of people around and some great stalls and eating places were available from many different countries - there was a nice buzz to the event. (Tomorrow more of the individual stalls).
|
Re: Today in pictures
Ooh, I would be running around taking pictures. What a lovely place.
I am very envious of these beautiful places that are close to you. |
Re: Today in pictures
I did take quite a lot of photos but it's hard in the middle of crowds as you get people walking across etc, so some of the pictures were spoilt, but as a whole I think that, with the ones I'll post tomorrow, you can get a good feel for the event. Cremona is a lovely backdrop too with the mix of architecture and colours you get.

especially markets. It gives the 'feel' of the place.....the busyness. I know when I went to Halifax market hall, the picture that showed it to be busy was better received than the one where I waited for an empty aisle so that the Victorian features could be seen more clearly. Cremona.....I would give my right arm to be let loose there with a good camera! You lucky Josser. |

I have not posted for a while, I have been too busy machining and fitting the metal parts to the model twin cylinder mill engine I am building, so I thought I had better catch up with a few quick snaps.
First five taken from my car on the way to pick up a mate at Clayton Hall. The others were taken in my garden,, many thanks to my wonderful gardener, Kate Brownlow. I have no idea what the flowers are but they look pretty. |

Today in Pictures, Lurking in the hidden corners of Memorial Park.......my case comes up next week. It had rained before I got here, well hailstones if I am being honest, and they were mowing the grass on the playing field opposite. So I started my ramblings with the smell of just cut grass, and moist earth which gave off a smell of things growing rapidly, its funny how these smells lift the spirit.
1. War memorial to the right, shelter at the top, copper beech on the sides. 2. It looks very formal from this angle. 3. Boundary fence looking toward Pendle. 4. There is a strong smell of kebabs, with garlic sauce. 5. From here you could be in the middle of the woods. 6. Martholme Viaduct, with Read in the distance, and some baasheep under foot. 7. The showers are never far away. 8. This was the only pink one I could find, although I did find a mucky knee. 9. A moist Rhododendron. 10. An Azalea giving its all, and out of the way from people in the park |
