What time of year best if I wanted to collect a few? I'm thinking of making a infusion with some and I've been told they can be pretty difficult to find.

Once established they are there all year, but they have more colour in Autumn

Strictly speaking, this is yesterday in pictures.
Southport...again if you want to know why then you will have to read my blog...which is coming soon.
1) last week it was all sea...this week it is all sand.
2) Flying a kite...well it was breezy enough.
3) these next pics are especially for Dianne....The Wayfarer's Arcade.
4) The dome in the Wayfarer's Arcade...reminds me of a spiders web
5) Looking towards Lord St from inside the Wayfarer's Arcade.
6) Speaking of Lord St......this is it basking in Solstice sunshine.
7) Water and children on a sunny day - they go together like donkey rides and ice cream with seaside
8) another one of Lord St.
9) Hold on - help is coming......an ambulance heading off to an accident.
10) More Water fun.

That was my day. I hope you enjoyed the flavour of it. It left me licking my lips and asking for more.

Perfect photos for the Summer Solstice!
Where I live now we can blame fallen trees on beavers. Happily the ones that lived in the ponds near me have departed, but not before felling many trees.

For this morning's toot, I chose to go to a nearby spot popular with tourists, but quiet at this time of day. At least I thought it would be!
Firstly, a few flower shots from mine and my neighbour's garden.
1. Campfire Rose, named after painter Tom Thompson. It's developed to survive our Canadian climate. We'll see!
2.and 3. Peonies
4. Out on the road: speed bump ahead!
5. and 6. Badlands from the side of the road. They're clay deposits layered with shale, I believe.
7. Fun to scamper about
8. What's going on here?
9. Oh dear.
10. A lot of wildlife about at this time of day. I saw a deer on the road (thankfully before we had an altercation with it) and this is a wild turkey.

I have been very busy building the model mill steam engine lately, now it steams up and runs I have more time on my hands.
I thought I had better get the camera out again before it goes rusty.
The American Road show was on at Leyland so I decided to have a look there.
The axes, knives and sword blades were all real and sharp enough, a few of us tested them. The spikes on the board were also pointed.

Good day out.

There was plenty of American muscle cars, lorries and pickups there, Country music and line dancing.

Today, a couple of short walks around the usual haunts plus a walk through a very nice farmers field down to hyndburn brook.

1. Some purple flowers.
2 & 3. Hyndburn Brook
4. A horny cow, there is however a bull over there that doesn`t like dogs, I have been warned.
5 Flying high
6. Seeing these all over now.
7. A Magpie.
8. I was trying to get a pic of the flies, but the auto focus went for the bird.
9. I think it`s following me.

Thanks, the farmer said he had a six foot tall foxglove at the back of the farm house but I didn`t know what it was. He was a very nice chap, said I can walk around down by the brook so long as I stay away from the bull that doesn`t like dogs and don`t damage any fencing.

Today in Pictures, this is probably the last time I will visit this once peaceful walk until the weather drives the nutters away. Kids jumping in the water by the weir, lighting fires (2), cans and disposable barbecues, all left behind later, a motorbike shared between another group tearing around the fields by the Devils Bridge.

1. Common Spotted Orchid in a large drift.
2. British fighting cows wander across the grasslands.
3. Himalayan Balsam, just starting to come into flower, wont be long before they are a dominant flower.
4. River Hyndburn off to the right, and the trees in the direction of Rishton.
5. Some areas still have meadow flowers.
6. To my back is the bridge over the M65.
7. Same area, just a bit further up.
8. Same area, a lot further up.
9. Heading back.
10. The fighting Cows, trying to escape the noise of the motorbike.

The people who stood there were all volunteers from the crowd and I don't think they had any contact with the show previously.
They did take a little bit of persuasion apart from the young girl in the white.
The "Indian" also had a bull whip and used it to cut paper in his partners hands.
She held the strip of paper and it slowly got smaller until her fingers were only two inches apart. he was a bout 8 feet away. I did notice she closed her eyes for the last crack of the whip.

From what I can see, it looks like the small flowered willow herb, not as "blousy" as the large willow herd that looks you in the face, this one is often overlooked as it is small and not covered in flowers like its cousin

I got pics of the bridge over the river stink...the one Dave told me about...and then made my way to the field to see the donkeys........but the donkeys were right over the very far side of the field.....could see their legs but not much else.
Had to make do with shetland ponies...and shetland pony foals....aaaaahhhhh!

A mixed selection taken around the farm this evening -hot off my memory card. Lots of swallows busy raising their young -these are low down in the pump room of the milking parlour. The new building extension which will house 150 extra cows is going up quickly - like a giant mechano set. A couple of shots of hay around the farm (they're busy doing the second cut of the year today), some of the farm cats and new kittens and finally I caught 91 yr-old Remo passing the gate on his way home after his daily constitutional - he is now in his summer gear! :hothothot

A couple of shots of hay around the farm (they're busy doing the second cut of the year today), some of the farm cats and new kittens and finally I caught 91 yr-old Remo passing the gate on his way home after his daily constitutional - he is now in his summer gear! :hothothot

Lovely barn kitties :)

Yesterdays Pics...the ones I taunted you with yesterday :D
And if some of these don't melt your heart...then it is because you haven't got one!
pictures 1-6 are the foals in the field near Hyndburn Bridge. OK, so they aren't donkeys, but lovely just the same.
(I will get donkeys some time soon)
7) Purple barge on the canal
8) Hyndburn Bridge.....it was nice to get in the shade for a few minutes. I was sweating cobs after my walk down there.
9) another view of the bridge - from the other side.
10) yellow vetch with a carefully concealed bee(you can see the tip of its wing at the right of the flower).

That was my Yesterday walk.

Hi Nicola! Nice to see you here :)

Just one photo for today: took a little drive and picked some more strawberries from Andrews Scenic acres. There was a school bus with 40 kids there about to go out into the fields and pick some berries. Now that would have given some good photo ops! But sadly, no time today to linger. I also got some freshly picked asparagus and a strawberry rhubarb pie, still warm from the oven, already sampled as you can see.

Today in Pictures, a short safari behind the pals centre.

1. The area to the rear is flora and fauna rich.
2. Brambles turning pink with age from white.
3. The Nettles are covered in the caterpillar of the Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly.
4. Himalayan Balsam starting to dominate with its coverage and height.
5. Clover covering areas close to the ground.
6. Six Spot Burnet Moth on thistles, the area is alive with them.
7. Almost a clover meadow.
8. What I think is a hoverfly on Bramble flower.
9. I think this has just emerged, the Ruby Tiger Moth.
10. Himalayan Balsam again, this time looking to take over Platts Lodge.

I saw one of those Burnet moths the other day when I was out and about, I thought it was a butterfly though...and it was away before I could get a pic of it....I could have followed, but I would have ended up in the canal:D

Search out the thistles, they infest then at this time of year, in a month they will all be gone.

Margaret Pilkington 24-06-2014 21:44

Re: Today in pictures

There don't seem to be as many thistles this year......well not on the path side of the canal.
Maybe that is why the one I saw flew off.....nothing to tempt it on the dry side.

I`ve been trying a new (to me) technique recently, rather than the panoramic mode on the camera, I take individual pics, making sure to overlap, then stitch together in photoshop. A lot more messing than the cameras automatic mode, but you get a lot more detail in the full size pics.

Margaret Pilkington 25-06-2014 07:03

Re: Today in pictures

That sounds like a lot of work, but the effects are stunning.
I did once have a go at the stitching thing, but I was hopeless and it put me off a bit.
Might try the automatic stuff first and see how it goes.

Wimbledon has started - a favourite time of year for me - makes me nostalgic so I thought I'd share this here!

My Nanna Chaffer's recipe for Lemon Barley water:
3/4 of a cup of pearl barley
Finely grated zest and juice of two lemons
1/2 a cup of honey (more or less)
6 cups of water

1. Rinse the barley in a sieve
2. Place barley in a saucepan with the lemon zest and water
3. Boil over a medium heat for 10 minutes then strain off the liquid into a large jug
4. Stir in the honey and lemon juice - adjust sweetness to taste
5. chill in the fridge once cool
6. Keeps in the fridge for about a week.

The only problem I can see is leaving it for a week in the fridge, I bet not many jugs go untouched for a week.

Today in Pictures, a tootle through Tottleworth.

1. Looking over Rishton dip, in the distance Moleside.
2. In the midst of the hamlet.
3. This house has a date stone for 1758.
4. Two streams arrive at this point, the names of which I haven't a clue.
5. This is the direction the stream then takes.
6. This is the underpass as the trains rattled overhead.
7. Just around the bend is Great Harwood, but time to turn around.
8. Ivy....you've got post.
9. An Egg Plant is for life, not just for Christmas.
10. They are putting the top soil back on the massive undertaking by United Utilities to put a water pipe around the world........well it felt like it.

Lovely place Dave and some great photos - it reminded me of these which are a few I took when I visited Tottleworth at the end of April - don't think I posted them back then as I forgot the USB lead to my camera and hadn't put my memory card in that day -typical! Only a few as I didn't have much space left...
Same house as in your photo in number one. In the second one you can just make out the spire of Rishton church and in the last one you can see the scar left when they had already put in some of those water pipes. Friend Andrea and Patch in number 3.

Its an interesting walk, its on my occasional meandering list. The house we both took, you have to get close so the large Road Closed signs and Sat Nav error don't spoil the shot, or get a horse to stand in front of them.

Re: Today in pictures

The girl with the pony was a fortunate coincidence -I waited till the right moment to cover up the sign when she came up the road as you said! I always think it's a shame when old places are spoiled by modern road-signs, cars, electric wires etc. Downham is nice for that as there are none of the modern electrical things on show to spoil the village.

Todays offerings are what I took this afternoon.
Nothing spectacular, unless you are into the mating habits of damsel flies.
1) Ouch...prickly!
2) damsel flies......doing what comes naturally. I averted my gaze(well, once I had taken their picture that is)
3) Two little ducks.
4) Oy...baldy bum. It looks like the duck on the left has pulled all the feathers off its bum...maybe it wants to get a good tan.
5) One little duck.

Today in Pictures, Altham Lane to the hanging shoe tree,or to use its Latin name Addidasito Plimpsolia.

1. That first barge has a heck of a chimney.
2. Its the White House, well not the White House, but a White house.
3. The beggars are trying to swim across the canal to get me.
4. These Orchids are springin up everywhere.
5. The area is pitted with once occupied dwellings.
6. A tranquil "S" bend on the canal.
7. Were gona need a bigger boat.
8. When we get to the bridge, its the turn around point.
9. The tree in question.
10. In the field next to the tree are a set of derelict buildings. It looks like a small community with a wall all the way around, and a road up to the canal. My best guess is that this was not set out as a farm but more a weavers community, unless someone knows what it was ?

Not from learning Latin, all plants have Latin names, my favourite one is Rubus Cockburnianus, a genuine plant name by the way. I like to drop that in conversation when I can, its a firm family favourite.

Lol ...and yes I did check it was a real name - thought you might be teasing again! :D Lovely plant - Goldenvale sounds much nicer.

The one that's stuck with me - a pet hate was 'Agrostis stolonifera' it's impossible to get rid of if it infests your garden.

I wouldnt dare make up a name like that, I would be moderated into submission if I did. Yours (grass) the clue is in the name, stolonifera would indicate that reproduction would take place in the form of underground stolons, as well as the established way of setting seeds................you learn stuff on this thread, we should apply for lottery funding.

Some got into the little planting areas where my bulbs were in our last place - it was murder. The more you try to pull it up the more it digs it's heels in. The stolons radiate out in all directions and put down new roots everywhere even in the stoniest ground. You think you've pulled up every last bit and it rears it's ugly head all over again -a lost battle!
