A walk down the Dunk for a change

1. This is from this morning on the way to work.
2. Heron flying off.
3. Flowers in the river.
4. If you really really really really really really really look carefully, you can just see a bit of kingfisher blue vanishing behind the grass, it was on the branch but i think the noise from the autofocus scared it off (i`ll get you next time http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/angry/smiley.gif)
5. A cluster of conkers.
6. Someone told me a while ago that cows wont cross the river.
7. A canal panoramic

Re: Today in pictures

Farmer Barnes, who's farm is behind the Walton Arms, often had to come over to our side of the Calder at Dunkirk Farm, Read when the river was low to get his cows back.
Often a dozen or so would decide the grass was greener the other side and splash their way over.

the kelpies are now open ... so instead of getting chased off by security blokes we had a wander down and round and along the extension to the forth canal back into grangemouth at the other side ... and ended up in a taxi back home... I couldn't walk no further ...

1. the long walk to the helix
2. along the back of falkirk football clubs stadium .. you can just see it through the grass
3. which way to the kelpies
4. the new playground that had just opened a couple of weeks ago
5. the swans on the canal bank with the kelpies behind
6. some wet stuff for dave .. no way were I wading into that ....
7. the kelpies wi the canal to the basin
8. the kelpies with the basin and the lock in the middle
9. the long long long walk back along the extension to the canal .. spugs says he now understands why its cost that much ...

Inside the Grangemouth refineries, middle photo is BP, others ICI. The memory of the smell still lingers, I carted a lot of Sodium Hydrogen Sulphide there and any school boy/girl will tell you how bad that smells.

Many thanks to my good mate "atkiman" for taking the photos for me.
We can blame him if the Refinery security men come looking for me.

Re: Today in pictures

I was told by the spugster to put my camera away when we were walking down the side of the refinery .. as it was safer otherwise we'd have had the security guards after us ... and he didn't fancy having to explain to the police that I never go anywhere without the camera ... we walked right down the side near enough to the docks down past the old railway line into the refinery .. and yes I got plenty of the falkirk wheel .. I went up for a wander round when the spugster went back to work .. and I got it in action both from the top and the bottom ... patience ... im only allowed 10 a day .. :D

I will be looking forwards to seeing your shots of the wheel Gen, I hope it was photos of the wheel you got in action from top and bottom.:rolleyes:

Just while we are discussing refineries and chemicals here are a few more photos of tankers.
No. 1 Me coming out of Blythes, it was a posed photo for the Companies Brochure. I didn't get any royalties for it.
No. 2 Another photo for a safety lecture, showing me in all the protective clothing taking a sample of NaHs, the operator must be imune from any splashes when I hand the bottle down to him.

No. 3. You would never know this place existed when you go up Dunmail raise from Grasmere to Keswick. It is a little water treatment plant down a little bank just below road level. They treat the clear pure water from Thirlmere reservoir before it free wheels to Manchester. It's seems a shame to add Caustic soda liquor or Sodium Hypochlorite to it. When there are no tankers there the big doors are closed and it blends into the scenery looking like a barn.

No more, I am tired out already with all the memories of work.

Not when you are queuing at Huskisson Dock waiting to unload oil onto a ship.
Maybe the dockers thought it funny to keep us there all day but it didn't amuse me.

KG5 in Glasgow was a pleasure to go to.
If the dockers didn't let us have a brew in their hut the first mate would take us on board for something a bit stronger.

Photos to follow when I find them.

I was happy enough to sit there all week, Shell were paying waiting time and it was probably a lot more than the dockers were earning plus I had my expenses.
They could sit under their umbrella all day for me, listening to the trams rumbling overhead.

Today in Pictures, not very far today, just around Bell Lane and a bit more.

1. Bell Lane is just through the gate.
2. Its also part of the Ladybird Trail, plus this is a bit of shade.
3. Looking back toward Bell Lane, you can see the water pipeline insertion has finished and the top soil has been put back and grass seed applied.
4. The wooded area that attaches to Wilson's Playing Field.
5. The steps are one of the things that last the longest.
6. A section of conifers, not how it would be planted today.
7. A still walked section of the "Priests Walk".
8. I think this picture says a lot.
9. Broadside to the pipeline.
10. And finally where the "Priests Walk"ended up.

A few snaps taken yesterday in Hamilton, a city to the west of Toronto. Also known as 'Steel City' (due to the steelworks) or 'The Hammer' for obvious reasons. Hubby and I had a great lunch in one of our favourite haunts, the Black Forest Inn: Rahm Schnitzel for me, and Schnitzel a la Holstein for him, all washed down with a nice pilsner, of course. Needless to say, they had to roll us out the door afterwards!
On the way back, we nearly hit this mounted police horse!!! He came into our lane from behind a bus with no warning. Great screeching of brakes and pounding hearts later, I have expected him (the cop, not the horse) to say something through my open car window, but he evidently had other business to attend to.

Lovely to see Bell Lane. John Broadley born 1816 who started the printing firm is buried in the graveyard. An earlier John Broadley had a shop on Bell Lane. He was the one who murdered his first wife, Ellen Strange but he lived to his late eighties so no guilty conscience it seems.

I will have a look for his grave the next time I am mooching the area, I know nothing of the history of Bell Lane, Altham, and it comes as some surprise when you say there was a shop located on it. It is at the moment a short lane with a dilapidated house at the bottom, and some remnant of a building at the top. It must have been busier in the past as there was a Church located at the top of the lane, and they located churches where the people were.

Thank you very much Gen, it's a place I have not had the good fortune to visit. Give your self a big hug and a pat on the back from me.:alright:
When I was tramping around those parts last they hadn't started building it and there was no way of crossing Scotland by water unless you went to the Caledonian Canal.
Me and my late wife used to hire a big motor cruiser and we used the Calley Cut a few times from Fort William to Inverness.
Have you ever visited the Anderton Boat lift near Northwich, I had loads of photos of that and used to load the tanker directly across from it before they reconstructed it and have been to see it in action. Sadly, the file with those photos on, including the Severn Valley Railway and the funicular lift at Bridgnorth has been deleted.
If anybody has photos of the Anderton lift I would really appreciate a look at them
All I have is one taken from ICI Winnington across the canal from it. It was still in a state of dereliction then.

Yes Russell, I do like Southport. It is like me...very refined(ok you lot...you can stop laughing)
I love the walk along the pier.....people watching.....shooting pics from a distance so that they are natural.
Today I thought I would give the panoramic setting a try.

We use our bus passes......we set off at ten past eight, we arrived back home at twenty past four.
Had lunch in a Wetherspoons in Southport.....mainly because himself said he could murder a pint(then proceeded to murder two - maybe it was because I was paying).

I left him at the top end of the pier and I walked to the end - he said I was a long time.
I lose track of time when I am taking pics.

Margaret, if I decide to have a ride out one weekday I would willingly take you both for company. I would leave you two to go your own way if you wanted and the draw would be the cost of a pair of smiles.
As long as you don't want me to go in Weatherspoons.
I was going to go in one day about noon time when we stayed at Byng House.
I opened the door, nearly tripped over two prams and there were two babies crawling on the floor, mothers at bar swearing like Scouse dockers, probably learnt it at their mothers knee
June turned round and walked straight out.
I enjoy watching the entertainment from the pier, just as you start to cross the lake down on the left.
Always good turns who have the confidence to get up and sing.

Margaret, I hope you don't think I was being snobbish about your choice of hostelries in Southport. It was probably a one off when I went and it stuck I my mind.
I have only ever been in one Weatherspoons and that was the White Hart at Todmorden.
That was OK after I had picked the peas off my bread they had plonked on top of my egg, chips and peas, probably run out if side plates.

Russell, when I go during the week I tend to go on my own. I like to be able to do my own thing.......but on a Saturday we do a little of what each of us likes......for him that is window shopping. For me it is striding out on the pier and taking pictures. We only went into Wetherspoons today because he had a wild thirst on him......fancied a lager.
It was before the lunchtime rush so the hordes hadn't arrived.
We spent about 20 minutes listening to songs from our romantic past....at the start of the pier.

4) The bride.
5) two young wedding guests...done up in their finery.
6) Happy day.
7) Strange alien guest at the wedding...well perhaps not alien
8) this is how it all starts...a walk on the beach, sunshine, sweet words....all my imaginings of course.
9) end of the pier....'Say cheese'.......a family picture being shot.
10) a family down at the waters edge(which was a long, long way from the end of the pier......not as far as Blackpool tower.

I hope you enjoy my whimsical wanderings.

Is that you with the Combined Stabilisation top on?

I cant just make out the name on the motorcycle petrol tank, is it a GUzzi? it's a cracking little pickup truck, do me to run about in.

Looks like my sins are forgiven then, cheers Gremlin.

Aye it is, it's an old "Stanley" away kit.

Good eyes mate! It most serpently is a "Guzzi" when I get the chance I'll put a couple of others on you can browse. :)

Cheers mucker, don't know a lot about Stanley or any other football kicking serfs so I didn't know about the Shirt.
Apart from watching half a match when I had the misfortune to drive the coach for Burnley I have never seen a football match. Only half a match, yes I was booted out at half time for walking into the dressing room at half time and asking for a brew. Big Jimmy Adamson was giving the lads a team talk, four nil down and he wasn't pleased with me interrupting his swearing.
I was relegated to the supporters coach but never got to drive it, my garage keys and fuel card were handed in and I finished with the firm, not enough danger money for me to risk my life carting those morons about.

A photo Margaret P posted of a V.W. camper van reminded me it was the V.W. show at Leyland today so off I went about noon and had a reasonable afternoon.

No. 1 Herbie.
No. 2 Karmann Ghia, rare breed, I knew a lady who owned one, she had a cafe somewhere opposite what was the AEU club on Blackburn road.. I didn't live in Accrington but she used to call to see a friend near where I did live and lent me the car a few times for an hour or two, (probably to keep hush about the meeting).
No. 3 Proper VW camper van.
No. 4 Modern VW Camper van.
No. 5 A Beatle
No. 6 That's the thing which makes the Beetle go.
No. 7 Moggie.
No. 8 A VW Beetle conversion.
No. 9 I came back down New Lane and stopped for a few seconds, this photo was taken through the car window (open) at exactly the right time. Lucky shot, taken with a Panasonic Lumix with Leica, very handy little pocket camera.
No. 10 Finally got chance to take it easy with a few cans and my feet up at home, hopefully Kate Brownlow will arrive at 9AM Monday to do the lawn and anything else in the garden that needs sorting out which makes hands dirty.

Another batch tomorrow.

The only way Dave, last night when it was so very hot I put the sprinklers on and pranced about under it in a pair of black boxer shorts, no socks either. What a lovely way to cool down and water the lawn as well. It poured down later but who cares I was nice and cool in bed.

Sorry, no body about to take the photo, thankfully.

I had a water cannon sat across my knees, like the old wild west cowboys with the shot gun. There is a big black cat that insists on trying to destroy all Kate's good work and I can just about reach it when it gets over the fence and that is 55 feet away. If I caught it I would enter it for the Grand National, it clears the 6 foot fence in one. No harm done to the cat.

Russell, some lovely pics there. Although not a fan of cricket, that shot is a purler.....well caught that man. I would be well proud of that.
Your garden looks a wonderful place to put your feet up with a good book and a glass of something cold.

Today in Pictures, the colour is returning.

1. Apart from the occasional protruding stones, there are no signs of previous use of the land.
2. The grasses that were so dominant on my last visit have now seeded and are returning to a lower level.
3. Whites and purple are becoming the dominant colour.
4. Despite dark clouds in all directions, and a wind that blows these flowers in all directions they still manage to stay tall.
5. Ox Eye Daisy and Willowherb belt out their colour.
6. There are dark clouds in all directions, yet the sun shines on this area.
7. Hymalayan Balsam and Teasels try to become the tallest.
8. If it wasnt for the motorway off to the left you would think you were in the heart of the countryside, although mentally, you can be.
9. Soldier Beetles appear to be in a feeding frenzy, for reasons I know not.
10. A Teasel as the flowers pulse up the head getting fertilised along the way, when the flowers reach the top the whole head has been fertilised

I was lucky with that shot Margaret. I could have waited ages for the man to be bowled.
I just set the camera on mutli shot, about 10 per second with one click, I focus on the batsman and keep one eye on the bowler and as his arm comes over to bowl press the shutter and hold it down. I usually manage to get at least one good action shot.
The two below were taken as I passed Todmorden Cricket ground. I just looked through the open gate and clicked away.

No. 3 A man asked for a photo of his dog so I obliged and emailed it to him (picture not dog)
No. 4 A fairground traction engine in the BCVM Leyland.
No. 5 My effort at artistic photography, not my cup o' tea.
No. 6 Big wheel on traction engine.
No. 7 A view I saw a lot in the interior mirror when I drove the coach, a Leyland Tiger Cub.
No. 8 Who remembers when poser lorry drivers had these on the cab roof.
no. 9 More clowning around with the camera this morning.
No. 10 The state of today's N.H.S.

Now they are uploaded I can get on with my breakfast.
I brewed coffee for Kate the gardener and got my basin out ready for my weetabix (other cereals are available in my cupboard). Then I put my teabag in the basin, wasted hot water and tea bag, start again Russell you plonker.
That's when I decided on Ribena instead of tea.

Today, Himself and I did something impulsive.....we went to Manchester.
OK...so not that impulsive then....but for us it was out of the ordinary.
I haven't a lot of variety for you....sorry.
The Manchester Wheel has appeared in Picadilly Gardens. I am not sue if this is a new thing....but today the wheel did not look operational.......so whether it has just been put up I know not(but am happy to be enlightened).
So here are my offerings for today.
1) Lunchtime in Picadilly Gardens.
2) workers soaking up the sun.
3) two cars set against the blue sky....Manchester? Surely not!
4) The Manchester Wheel.
5) Sssshhh! Walls have.......ice lollies :D
6) Pigeons perched on a tin tree> Why would you have a tin tree in the centre of a city? Are Real ones not good enough for city pigeons?
7,8 and 9) More pics of the wheel...different angles.
10) Welcome to Rainbowland.

D.i.G. thanks for those lovely nature photographs, proper country scenes.
I like the Meckem**** and trailer, unusual combination, it must turn over very easily.
Do you know if the Guzzi is a one off or are there more. Get one restored, put a settee on the back and it would make a decent mode of transport for getting the leg less home from the Railway.

They obviously didn't fire real bullets Frank but the noise and flame was real.
I got some photos of the knives and axes in mid air when the Indian was throwing them at boards with people stood in front.
I would love a go at trying to get a photo of a bullet leaving a gun though.
Maybe if I bought an air pistol we could have a go at getting a photo of the the thing with feathers on it leaving the gun.
I recon me and you would eventually manage it if we had a big box of missiles.
I have plenty of outside secure space.

Right, I am going online to source an air gun, the challenge is set.

It's all in the muzzle velocity. The guy in the deer photo ... love it by the way ... is using a lever action ... looks like a 30-30 ... probably a Winchester '94, or maybe a Marlin. They don't have that high of a muzzle velocity; Google will tell you exactly;). You could lower the speed by loading your own ammo and cutting down on the propellant. Maybe there's a local gun club you could check out. I think Retlaw knows a lot more about this shiite than I do. My knowledge is limited to things like knowing not to use a Ruger 204 when hunting in heavy bush.:D There's possibly special cameras that would do the trick, but I don't know much about photography.

When I worked over at BP in Hull I got friendly with gun man who took me to the indoor range a few times, only pistols allowed.
He made his own bullets and I was allowed to have a shoot, I had six with a gun with a revolving chamber which nearly blew me backwards and six with a Magnum. I looked after a caravan for an old gentleman when we ran the park and he started the Burnley Gun club, he was a police man and had medals all over the place. I never got chance to visit with him though. He has since passed away.
Below are a couple of what I call my faffing about photos, taken with the little Panasonic.
You can make out the name Lumix in the reflection along with my fingers.
Fast shutter, wide aperture, no flash, thirty clicks and pick the best. All luck.

I believe they produced various models over a couple of years, from what I've heard, seen & read, but as they weren't the most practical of vehicles finding working examples is limited to such events. :)

I agree Frank, read all the books you want, get the basics and then as I call it "faff about" remembering what setting does what. It was too expensive years ago when we had film cameras and that when you had to be skilled or throw money into the developing shop bank account.

This photo was another multi shot with the Nikon D7100 and you can see bits of balloon flying away after the axe hit it.
