I returned from my evening refreshments at about 9PM and the 400mm lens I used for the Lancaster photos was still on the Nikon so I popped it through the window and snapped the moon, I didn't bother with a tripod but if it is as clear tonight I will use a 800mm lens and tripod. Maybe see the flag the Yanks are supposed to have left there.

A few snaps from this weekend. The weather had changed from 30 degree heat and nasty humidity on Friday to a nice sunny crisp day on Saturday - after some pretty dramatic storms. The farmers market was in full swing in my little town. I also passed a field full of flowers - I must go back there for a proper look soon. Not so sure about the fries, though

I often wondered what the green light was below the Accrington wind turbines so I went up with the camera, still with the long lens, and popped a few shots off through the car window.
A quick shot through the other window and there was Great Harwood, no sign of Oswaldtwistle in the valley.
Just so you won't think I had given up on the infra red camera I took it with me and shot a couple of frames, I am still learning but I think they look a bit spooky.

I suppose you more agile people will have been closer to the building with the numbers on, if so what do they refer to?

looks like you got a young Belgian (Malinois) in pic 5 Dotti & Gremlin your IR pics I like, can't say why but I just do. As to those green numbers I think they're stats, e.g. how much power generated & suchlike. :)

Gremlin 08-09-2014 17:48

Re: Today in pictures

You are probably right DiG, the top number was changing every few seconds so I guess that's the power being drawn from the station.
The IR is just a bit of a novelty and a way to further my knowledge of photography.
There are some photos people post that are so weird through manipulation that I thought my IR would be accepted.

Wrong Eric, they were only checking to make sure the bomb doors opened.
They filled the bay with our unwanted unwashed relatives of taxi drivers intending to drop them off over the icy waters around the N.Pole.

Where ever they were built it's a marvellous achievement for two old crates to still fly after 70 years, especially crossing the Atlantic as yours did.
I wonder what route they took.
Due west is Newfoundland, probably shortest distance over water. Not the best mode of transport for the passengers and driver but I bet they enjoyed every minute.

Not my work ... there are a whole bunch of videos on You Tube ... all about Saskatchewan ghost towns. It's hard to get used to Saskatchewan ... it's different. And I can't post pics 'cause I don't live there any more. Also, it's about 3 days west of here (reminder: this is a big mother of a country); so, I can't just pop over. Wish I could. As the First Nations say, it's "the land of the living skies." Folks who are interested in photographing endless horizons and amazing sunsets would love it.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Lancaster will depart from Hamilton, Ontario on August 4th and plan to arrive in England on August 8th. The North Atlantic crossing will include en-route stops at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, possibly Narsarsuaq, Greenland, and Keflavik, Iceland, prior to arriving at the BBMF, RAF Coningsby. Shortly after arriving, the Lancaster will undergo a scheduled maintenance inspection and then the Canadian crews will complete a short training program with the BBMF in preparation to participate in several air displays and fly pasts with the BBMF Lancaster and fighters starting on August 14th.

Indeed it is ... The Lanc was on display in Kingston a few years back. I took a tour of it ... amazing. Of course, being me, I didn't take a camera;) I'm more into squirrels and snow:D There's also a restored Halifax in Trenton, a few klicks west of me. A mixed bag today.
Firstly, Turtle mentioned graveyards as a subject for IR photography so I managed to snatch a few minutes in the old Altham Church yard.
Earlier I had been to my mates and his neighbour has a very large house, I didn't realise that half of it was an old barn dating from the start of the 16th century. Inside it is not allowed to be altered in any way and all the roof and beams are original. From the outside you wouldn't know what was within. I been going for twenty years and never guessed what it was.
At her request, no outside photos.

Finally, this creature was knocking at my door looking for food.

Thank you Turtle.
It was a bright sunshiny evening about 6.45PM, I was on my way to sample a few jars of lemonade and thought of what you had said as I passed the old Church.
I thought the sun shining through the tree and casting shadows would make a good photo.

The other is Clayton Hall taken about 4PM after dropping my mate off.
I pulled the gate to for effect.

I agree! Great selection of photos and the barn looks really impressive. My favourite is number 1 though - I love the mellowness of the old stone. It's a favourite church of mine. Number 3 is quite eery!
Nice one of Clayton Hall too on the later post.

Re: Today in pictures

I'm trying to decide what it is I like about this technique. It certainly brings an ethereal spookiness to the churchyard scenes. The angel sculpture shot is really lovely. My favourite in the previous set (if I have to pick one) is #4. The sepia tones work nicely, I think. You picked a wonderful old churchyard - great atmosphere to begin with! This technique exaggerates that. Of the second set, I like the first one best, although the composition in the other one is great.

Today's weather is unseasonably cool, but it makes for pleasant walking. During a couple of laps around the fair ground track, I came upon a couple of tractors left over from last weekend's Fall Fair. They appealed to me, so here are a few shots. I have to agree with everyone else, number 4 has all the elements for a good composition, plus its a cracking subject water.

Today in Pictures becomes Yesterday in Pictures due to an overwhelming curriculum, the last time I was here it was covered with groups carrying carrier bags full of tinnies and disposable barbecues, nut jobs on motorbikes, and groups just forming a queue to hurtle over the weir. Today it was just me and nature, the rustle of the leaves turning brown and the music of the water as it flows toward the Calder.

1. When I first came here the river flowed off to the left.
2. Devils Bridge.
3. The river flows under the motorway, unnoticed by most drivers.
4. The Dunkenhalgh is just off to the right.
5. The browns of Autumn start to take over.
6. The land I am stood on was once part of the opposite bank, now the River Hyndburn has moved it over.
7. Same spot, but looking up stream.
8. Very little fungi are evident around here, but I found one collection.
9. I stumbled across this pond, never having seen it before.
10. Hold my coat.......I'm going in.

Thanks, it a pond I will return to at a later date to have a proper mooch around as I have never seen this before, there is one that you can see from the road, this must be behind it. You can make out a sluice gate on the right hand bank, so it must have supplied a factory at some point in its history.

Is the one you can see from the road rishton paper mill lodge? Or am I in the wrong area? :D

There's some lovely water shots being posted of late.

Pretty sure that`s the same one you can see from the road Dave, it`s quite a big private fishing lake.

I thought that initially, but I couldn't see the road from where I was and there is a line of trees on the right hand side, and from the road there is a gate so not sure if it is or not.

I came at it from the back side so not absolutely sure what it fed but you are in the right area.

Re: Today in pictures

I think the gate is being hidden because of the angle of the trees, it will be after that sluice gate (water from sluice gate comes out near the waterfall), Park View Garden Centre behind the trees opposite. Did you come up through the woods and have to walk around a fallen tree?
It`s a nice walk around the lake and worth a second look.

Just checked Google Earth and it is, as suggested the only water in the area, I came at it from the side of the factory and the river, it looks like the trees hid the road from my view. I have to say it looked more photogenic from the angle I viewed it from, and the view from the road I think hides the beauty of the area.

I haven't heard of another lodge in that area other than the "paper mill lodge" (I'd be interested to know if it is different) the paper mill lodge use to be good fishing and was managed by hyndburn and Blackburn fishing club before it got polluted (think its free now).

Anyways, great shots as usual....Nice one :)

There is only one large pond just to the left of Hermitage street as you climb the hill to Rishton It few the Rishton paper Mill many years ago.
The river flows to the Clayton side of it and both parts of the old mill.
Does the river run underground in places between ASDA and the M65.
I don't venture off track much but seem to have lost it somewhere around the card factory.

It`s a nice walk around the lake and worth a second look.

I followed the river until I got to the Mill Wood and entered the wood just where the concrete mine shaft cap is located, I ambled through the woods until I came out just where the woods butts up to the reservoir. Never having been through that bit before was not totally sure of my location, I then headed back down to the disused factory.

It's catch up from Sunday, more spottering for the ancient mariner along the weser but this time at Bremen. So as not to OD on shippy things, a touristy amble about the city was instigated. :)

The Bremer Rathaus with the Bremer Roland out front - St.Petri Dom - Another landmark of Bremen "Der Stadtmusikanten" (the town musicians) based on a Brothers Grimm fairytale - A closer look at the Rathaus masonry work - Ahh ..... the elixir of life & a damned good reason for being in Germingland :D - The "Molentorn" light/navigation tower sitting on a spit of land separating the Weser from one of the Harbours - Bremen from the river - The "Schlachte" (promenade area full of cafes, bars & restaurants) St.Martini Kirche & the landing stage viewed from Wilhelm Kaisen bridge - The "Hanseat" our steed for the day - finally a couple of feathered urchins. :)

The river has a fork around the M65 (green arrow), and there are tunnels where I have put red and yellow circles. I think the other end of the tunnel with the yellow circle ends up at Hyndburn Brook (orange circle)
