What size card do you use, Margaret. I have an 8GB in both my cameras and as soon as I have downloaded them onto my 2TB external hard drive, I format mt SD card.

It's been a soggy week over here, except for a few drier moments. Dodging the rain clouds, hubby and I drove over to Esquesing Conservation area for the first time in many a year. I was struck by the noise of the gravel pit next door, and all the dust from the gravel hauling trucks. But once inside the woods itself, it was blessedly peaceful. The damage from last winter's ice storm was everywhere to be seen along with a few mushies. I had planned to get down a la davemac, but decided against it once a saw the snake! Just a wee fellow (a garter snake, quite harmless) but still a snake!

Thanks Frank! I'm so glad we decided to go - it really was a case of "watch those clouds". It was a bit mucky underfoot, but not bad. All the leaves are in their best colour right now, but not much of that in the woods! More to come tomorrow.

64gb...it was what was recommended......but I have never filled it yet.
I think that the 64gb is recommended in case you shoot in RAW.....but I haven't tried that format yet.

I transfer to my computer after each session of photography(and to the 1TB external hard drive and a 128GB stick) after all you can't be too careful(after the loss of my last external drive I am super cautious)

The guy with the bucket reminds me of when I tried digging for clams on a beach in Prince Edward Island. I got squirted in the face by the mucky devils - put me off, I can tell you!

Re: Today in pictures

Yes...I can remember a day out to St Annes as a child we spent all day on the beach collecting cockles. Took them home in a large galvanised bucket.
When I saw what they looked like once cooked and out of the shells I couldn't bear to try them.....but Dad and the boys loved them drenched in vinegar).......the excess were swapped for a dozen eggs and a boiling fowl.
So the day was very productive.....cost very little(half a crown for the jug of tea to go with our sandwiches. Two bob back on the jug)
Those were really happy days.

First rule in the things at ground level: if its not wet you are not doing it right.

On a general note there are some very interesting subjects being photographed at the moment on here, slightly envious my large curriculum does not permit such expeditions at the moment, have taken note of the large number of wet bits......outstanding.

Just had a catch up of the week - what great photos from everyone, some real gems. Have really enjoyed perusing them all :)

I have been away on a short break to Lucca in Tuscany this week where I met up with my aunt and uncle. Left my "boys" behind and took way too many photos but it is an amazing town with complete bastions and walls surrounding it which are 500 years old and are a fantastic recreational area with spectacular trees and views. There are traces of the roman town in Piazza del Amfiteatro which is the only oval piazza in the world, lots of mediaeval buildings and churches and some more recent as well as amazing shops, many with the original art nouveau fronts intact . I also visited Palazzo Pfanner with it's lovely Italianate garden, the botanical gardens and the house where composer Puccini was born.
I immediately noticed that it is a bike friendly place so here's a first look at Lucca with pedal power in mind. Spot the tandem and monocycle!

Wherever you looked there were bikes - I struggled for an hour to reduce the photos from over 20 to 10 - some will fit in with another theme I have in mind.
I had to put in number one - aftermath of a cloudburst the first evening in Lucca - the light and reflections were special and will always remind me of that moment, we had set out without brolleys and took shelter under shop-fronts!

2 Resting a while
3 Easy way round, take a carriage ride. (4.2km round tour on the walls)
4 Ride in a buggy with the family - this way the kids don't moan!
5 Playing dominoes
6 Meeting old friends - top dog in his usual place, usual time.
7 Discussing politics
8 Contemplating the mountains
9 Snap!
10 Student reading group - all their own words.

Margaret Pilkington 22-10-2014 07:45

Re: Today in pictures

I like your 'more of the same' too.
They are just what I would have liked to have captured.
I like to catch shots of people doing what they do, without knowing that the camera is on them. The shots are more real somehow, and have a different feel to those shots where people know they are being photographed.

I love 5 and 6......they would both lend themselves to selective colour reduction very nicely......take the colour out of the background and just leave the men in colour.....think it would make for an interesting shot.......but that is just me!

Piazza del Anfiteatro in Lucca - unique place as it is a perfect oval. The mediaeval buildings sprang up around the remains of the old Roman amphitheatre. Any stone from that was slowly poached away for other buildings leaving the outline of the amphitheatre and the 4 arched entrances into it are where the gladiators used to enter it originally.

Some very atmospheric shots.
I especially like number five...those earthworks look very interesting.......I like seven as well.
That is a great capture.

The locals seemed to enjoy a very laid-back lifestyle - many getting about on foot or on bikes. Not many cars allowed in the walled town though the local buses thundered through during the day and didn't take any prisoners.
I really liked the feel of the place -there were lots of tourists but it still retained a small-town, intimate feel.

Have tried all fungi season to get a good shot of that fungi, but this year the slugs beat me to it every time.

I love the coluur in them all - number 5 is such a great subject -I've never seen one in the wild - did you notice the little slug crawling up it?

I beg to differ though and say my favourite is number 6 ;):)

I only know of a couple of sites that contain that fungi, but this year slugs have been in abundance, and yes I noticed that one crawling up the stem, they have got to most of the ones I have found this year.

Yes,I noticed the slug too.I thought to myself, they must have a good immune system as that mushroom is well known for its hallucinogenic toxins.
I've had a look myself when I've been out in woodlands etc and still to this day haven't seen one,yet dave seems to find them on a regular basis (I'm not bitter though). :D

It helps if you have a fungi detector set to about 6 mycelium on the sensitivity scale. However once you find some fungi you sort of "get your eye in" and they start to jump out at you from all sorts of places.

Is that your way of saying I need a trip to specsavers d :D.
I can usually find shrooms etc without a problem it's just, that particular one just seems too elusive.

I see that like here, most leaves are down now. There are still some lovely russet brown colours to be seen, and number 10 shows this beautifully :)
Cheeky slugs - they do like their mushies!

Well, the hols are over & we're back in Germingland & I'm still playing catch up.

So from Cov to Chesterfield & its famous twisted spire church & aged buildings x3 - Then back into the Charabanc & across to Gods waiting room (Cleveleys) x2 - Finally down to Blackpool for the lights. All in all an average touristy day! :)

That we have Frank, as we got on the ferry last night in UK I checked the readings from the speedo. From leaving Germany up to getting on the ferry last night it was around 3,370 km, so aye we've done some distance. :)

Still, it was worth it mind!

Following the Touristy trail, on Wednesday (our last full day at home) we wandered our way to Preston & from there to Lytham st.Annes (another contender for Gods waiting room! ;))

Architectural Preston x2
- A rather scary Duck (one of many at sites around the North West) - Some Mad Woman down Preston Docks (She couldn't find any Cats to feed so settled for feathered beasts instead) - Preston Dock (Without the Mad Woman) - Lythams most recognizable features, the Windmill & Old Lifeboat station shown together, then singly - New Lifeboat Station.

From my visit to Crawford Lake a few days ago:
1. Recreated 15th century First Nations village. Archeologists discovered there had been up to 5 longhouses here, and 250 - 350 people.
2. Entrance through the palisades.
3. House of the Turtle Clan!
4 and 5. Inside (complete with modern day exit sign)
6. Cosy sleeping platform - no privacy in this house!
7 and 8. A complete surprise: inside one of the longhouses was this newly built presentation centre.
9. How could I resist?:p

Me too T, photo's (especially vintage ones) are a kind of time machine and the best bit about older ones is there's not a handheld device or chav insight ;).
