Today in Pictures, a place that draws me back, striding through the valley of stone.

1. Heading past the reservoirs we start the climb uphill.
2. An abandoned farmhouse on the way up.
3. At the top of the climb, a complex of buildings to process the stone quarried from the hill, you can make out the stone base that houses a steam engine to process the stone, its to the right of the buildings below the hole in the wall.
4. Another steam engine foundation, this is next to the pond so could be to pump water to the cutting machines.
5. This is the hub of the operation, I am standing on the "Tramway" this was used to get the stone moved around the area and off the hill.
6. Looking down on Calf Hey and Ogden reservoirs, with Helmshore in the distance.
7. Part of the Tramway, looking at the spoil piles, these piles cover the top of the hill, and are now covered in part with grass, moss and heather.
8. A drop in altitude, almost back at water level, many streams feed the top end of Calf Hey Reservoir.
9. Spotted this in passing, not sure what it's about, but you have to walk a long way to get here.
10. Heading back to the car,the climb we did on the right, we then walked the ridge to the far right and down at the other end of the reservoir.

Spring is here:eek: Not much of a topic for us, eh; unless a few pics of garbage in the slowly shrinking snowbanks will do. We should gang up and get our own back. If one of us wins we could go for topics like, "cutest baby skunk", or "a bear I met in the park", "coons on my lawn", "a coyote I bumped into on my way to the bar", .... and let's not forget "SNOW.":D

Today in Pictures, a walk in a very brown world.

1. A once proud boundary wall and enclosure now just provides a boundary marker. Pendle Hill is peppered with these stones, often walked passed and never noticed.
2. This was once a cart track that headed up to the Craggs.
3. All trees require is a niche to get a foothold.
4. Churn Clough to the left and Sabden just beyond, further on the hills that surround Hyndburn.
5. Some crumbling structures, possibly for penning sheep, or shepherds refuge. The Craggs can be seen off to the right at the top.
6. A hidden boundary stone for Padiham and Hapton Local Board 1892.
7. In Summer this is green as far as the eye can see.
8. With hills on either side it is very quiet, no obtrusive car noise, all that can be heard is the stream as it bounces off the stones that line its base, in the distance the occasional sheep can be heard, but most noise is coming from the grouse as they sit among the heather on the next hill.
9. The stillness is very seductive, but time is getting on, and so must I.
10. You looking at me.

Today in Pictures, more than a moist moment.

1. Just on the border with Hapton, this bit is still in the borough, and part of the Hyndburn Clog (a walk I have done twice)
2. Leaving Hyndburn, and dropping down to the Hapton border.
3. This is where the stream we are about to follow dives down a Victorian culvert to go under the railway line, and then the Motorway(M65)
4. Castle Clough, it wasn't really a castle just a fortified manor house that used to sit on the high ground to the right of the picture.
5. The Wild Garlic is poised to flower.
6. The high points used to join up, until the stone was quarried out, then at some point the stream was put to use, the stone pillar was one half of a sluice gate. The base of the gate is still visible under the water.
7. These stones from time to time are dislodged off the rock face and tumble down to the low point.
8.Sometimes the water level is such that tree roots tumble along the stream bed.
9. There used to be a footpath along the waters edge but that vanished a few years ago when we were all subjected to flood conditions.
10. That concludes a walk that went on longer than expected, but I was mooching with the camera, just round the corner is back lane, and the way home.

The Credit River near where I live has developed quite an ice dam. It does this most years when the ice breaks up and can't escape over the dam. I've been meaning to go onto the bridge to see it for a few days now, and today was the day! On one side you can see the ice backed up, and the damage to the willow trees left over from last winter's ice storm. On the other side is the old bridge and dam, and what's left of the Barber Paper Mill after a developer started 'restoring' it. As the weather warms a bit more (Oh please!) the ice will start to flow - it's quite a site when it does.

Too many places to be this last week so everything out of sync, so here is yesterdays, today, a walk around the area of the Dunkenhalgh estate close to Rishton dip (paper mill). I haven't walk this way for months and noticed the banks had eroded more than expected, plus the amount of rubbish washed down from Town is excessive, plastic hanging from tree branches and for some reason a lot of plastic footballs.

Another Yesterday in Pictures, under blue skies and a moderately warm sun we ventured around Dean Clough Reservoir, it must be because it was the second day of Spring that brought out all the people, it was the busiest I had seen it.

1. Heading down through the Pines to the wet bits.
2. Although it is still early in the season the buds on the trees are just starting to burst.
3. The lower wet bit.
4. I can only guess what this jetty was for, perhaps people used to have small boats on here?
5. The walls that used to be boundaries to the fields are slowly succumbing to gravity.
6. At the top edge of the top reservoir.
7. A view down the length of the two wet bits.
8. A similar view but just a few steps to the left as you look down.
9. Mid point, the overflow between the top and bottom reservoirs.
10. Now at the bottom of the wet bits with them behind me and looking over to Pendle Hill.

Lovely shots, and well done for dodging all the gawpers. You'd never guess there were crowds about. Number 6 has great lighting :)

If you look very carefully, you can see the snowdrops ... -15 (without the wind chill) when I took this pic. But these are Canadian snowdrops ... tougher than boiled owl.:D

There was only one destination today "Kloster Scheyern" just outside of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, settled by Benedictine Monks to salve the immortal souls of their flock & supply the local populace with a pretty damn fine set of Beers,(triv alert - third oldest brewery in Germany) just the thing for religious salvation. :D

Hop Farm at Niederthann - Preparing the Hop nets - Scheyern Brauhaus - Inside the Kloster Braustüberl - Why are my ears crinkling? - Ah, holy water ;) - Kloster Scheyer x2 - Chapel roof & wall paintings.

As you are being poetic:

Sometimes, when I'm out walking my munchkin on bitterly cold early spring nights, I think of the last line of Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind." I know; I'm weird sometimes;) That's one sonofabitch who hasn't stood on the corner of Portage and Main on a cold night.

"If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?" Yes it can, this year for us in Southern Ontario. But still it must be worse, for the poor souls on Canada's East coast. :eek

In the town of Wolnzach in the region of Oberbayern - Brother bear - Weihenstephan Friesing.

You could put your back out if you zoom to maximum without bracing yourself, nice perspective foreshortening on the zoomed bits.

Which is not all that bad ... with all the snow we had, a slow melt cuts down on the chance of flooding ... And there are things to look forward to and enjoy. It's Maple Madness at the Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area: real maple syrup and pancakes:D And the hockey playoffs ... looks as if it might be the year for les Habitants:alright:

Turtle 27-03-2015 15:28

Re: Today in pictures

Good point about the flooding, Eric. That plus we'll get to enjoy Spring all the more when it finally gets here. I never really rely on it until late May early June anyway - anything else is just bonus :)

After a bit of googling, I found out the Apaches from last week had been seen at RAF Leeming (there were four of them apparently), so I took a drive past today to see if anything interesting was happening.
