Anyway I found enough to photograph, so as you would expect when you go down the woods to photograph the Bluebells, there are Bluebells and lots of the woods, with just a moistening of a wet bit.

It's such a joy to see the bluebells out in all their glory - number 9 is my fave :)

I must admit the white garlic flowers look pretty amongst the bluebells, but it's a bit disconcerting to see them taking over. Lovely shots, davemac :)

Beware of booking cottages through Trip Advisor. We read the reviews on this on in Capel Gwyn on Anglesey and booked it. Since we booked it had two bad reviews and the owner laughed it off as being from rival cottage owners. It is very damp and cold. The cottage can be seen on
Holiday Cottage in Rhosneigr, Llanfaelog with beach/lake nearby and balcony/terrace

Nice presentation Frank. Can you post it on Trip advisor?
I had a similar experience once and left the cottage after two nights and went into a hotel.
I send a dozen photos to Hoseasons when I got home but they refused to do anything about it because I should have notified them as soon as I saw the state of the place.
The book case was full of mouldy books, all priced in Pound shilling and pence.
There was brown sugar in a basin which had solidified in to one lump. A jam butty down the back of the settee. The list was endless.
It puts you off renting the cottages again. Like you we used them because we took a dog.

Re: Today in pictures

We have always had good cottages up to now in Scotland and Wales. The photos are only a few. I have put my review on Trip Advisor, but like Accyweb, I can only post ten pics. There has been two bad reviews on trip advisor since we booked, but the owner has laughed them off saying it was from his rivals.I am prepared to take it further. I have contacted Trading Standards in Anglesey so say it was not fit for purpose.

We have rented houses in Llandudno through Holiday Lettings...and though you can pay through Trip advisor, it isn't the agent in the deal.
The two houses we go to are in tip top condition and are always spotlessly clean and have everything you could possibly need other than a good mobile phone signal....and internet.
There is BTopenzone, but it is very sporadic and apt to drop out.
I am sorry to hear that you have had such a raw deal...I would be seeking some money back.

Today was a return to Musbury Heights.

1. The steep walk up the hill.
2. One of the derelict properties that are dotted around the area.
3. You climb all the way up here to take photos, and you are "mucked up" with photographers when you get here.
4. And here we are Musbury Heights.
5. Kept as a hint to what was once here.
6. The tramway, you can still see the wood sleepers and iron rail pins if you really look.
7. Walking the length of the tramway.
8. Off the end and down to reservoir level.
9. Approaching the wet bit and a right turn heading back.
10. The remains you see are the remnants of weavers sheds and farm buildings, evicted by the water board for fear their animals would contaminate the water. Now the area is dotted with animals, and you have to ask was all the displacement, heartache and the destruction of the community really necessary after all.

Dave, I like number three....the people do not spoil the picture....they are part of it.
When I am snapping and people move out of shot, I tell them that I do not mind them being in my picture if they do not mind being in it.
Sometimes people give life to pictures. That is not to say an unbroken view of nature is not beautiful.
People just give a shot another dimension.

As you know people do not feature very strongly in most of my pictures, but this one would not have been taken had it not been for the people, it was just a whimsical remark about climbing all the way up the hill, and it was a bit of a slog, to find we were beaten to the summit.

Margaret Pilkington 24-05-2015 15:16

Re: Today in pictures

Yes Dave, I thought it was a bit whimsical, but as you say folk don't often feature.....and you can be sure that when they do they add something.
Your pictures are always,(without exception) beautiful, thought provoking and interesting. They bring the outdoors inside for those who cannot get out into the great wild wetness...another of your themes.

I had a ride over to Heptonstall today, there is a grave there containing the remains of David Hartley. He was know as the Yorkshire coiner. His crime was to cut edges from the old coins and melt them down to forge new ones and he was very successful until he was caught.
He was hanged at York and left swinging for a week before being taken back to his home in Heptonstall where he was buried.
I then showed my friend around the village.

No. 1 The grave.
No 2. Towngate where my sister lives.
No 3 & 4. The old Church.
No 5. Local entertainment.
No 6. looking back towards Todmorden.
No 7. Same spot but with a bit of zoom on the lens.

Today with a threat of rain, but with a wind to keep it away we set off to Troy Quarry.

1. Spoil piles are now almost invisible.
2. A slight diversion passed the quarry, I am looking for a trough.
3. Sheep are content to live in the scar ridden landscape.
4. On the edge of a long lost community the gate post still stands sentinel for its owners who have slipped into the past.
5. Found it, it looks out over the quarry it came from.
6. Troy Quarry, stone from here paved London, its quartz based sandstone was used to pave large areas of the Capital but the most famous location is Trafalgar Square, how many of us have walked the capital and not realised the stone under our feet came from home.
7. Life on the edge.
8. We all find ways to entertain ourselves. Life on the edge part 2.
9. The area has a gentle bumpiness about it.
10. This stream is one of many that draw lines in the landscape of this area.

Could be that when you extend the lens it lets light in. It's not an easy fix.
Try taking the same shot a few times. each time extend the lens a little further.
Have you another lens to try or are you using a bridge camera?

It has me baffled (not hard,i know).... it happens every time i use zoom (even slightly),yet its fine without .
I don't have a lens as such due to it being a "bridge camera" G, i'm wondering if something has broke inside or our peg has messed with the settings.

There is nothing wrong with auto unless you are being really experimental.
The reason I asked about automatic is that in the zoomed images seem to have a higher ratio of light shades than the ordinary shots. Is it possible the compensation settings have been altered.
Does it give you that effect on all zoomed images?

You could also place your camera in a black bin bag with just the end of the lens poking out of a hole, wrap an elastic band around it, take a picture (zoomed) if it improves then then you have what Gremlin suggested, light leaking in somewhere.

The bloke in a camera shop in Bburn says it's the light sensor or something like that.....surely that should effect all the pics?
it's not worth fixing as its only a old (Fuji finepix SD6500fd) camera and it'd cost more than buying another camera.....sales pitch? Hmmmm

Today was a windy experience, one minute I was on the edge of "Ossy" Moor the next I was promenading along the Rossendale Way. It proved to me we live in green and sometimes pleasant land. On the way home the Gorse lining the motorway was belting out full colour and the Ox Eye Daisy was giving a hint it was about to drift white flowers everywhere, and on the wind you could smell the Hawthorn flowers.

1. Jamestone Quarry with Ossy Moor off to the left.
2. As we edge up the hill a big machine is pushing stuff around in the quarry.
3. I am starting to wonder if I am in for a dousing.
4. Trees are shaped by the elements, and not by their desire for the light.
5. I am stood on the Rossendale Way, and just over that wall is Ossy Moor.
6. On the boundary looking in the direction of Helmshore.
7. The remains of what I believe is an old cart track.
8. The top end of Jamestone Quarry, and tucked into the "V" of the trees on the right is Troy Quarry.
9. The turbines are turning under turbulent skies.
10.Just on the edge of Ossy Moor looking over to Calf Hey and Musbury Heights.

I was in the Blind Welfare Society yesterday with my camera and decided to try out a new lens I have.
It's has a fantastic range for 18mm to 300mm.
Nothing special, just messing about. All untouched or modified.

No 1. A customer.
No 2. Collection box.
No 3. The upper car park on a busy Friday afternoon.
No 4. Across the top of Union street.
No 5. Four coach train, unusual, or is it.
No 6. Taken from same spot as the train.

I'm very happy with my purchase.

I am not a big fan of bugs, but I do like your pics Dianne....you have captured these insects beautifully.
The butterfly is gorgeous, and the flying thing with its wings folded(not sure if that is a butterfly too) reminds me of my tiffany style lamps that I bought a couple of months ago.....when our refurbishment was being completed.
Lovely work.

Today it was the take down of the pics in the exhibition.
I brought mine home, they are framed and awaiting a man with a hammer to put them up on my wall.
Picture to follow.

It's good to see your Ma home and looking good, Margaret. Your photos for the competition are great - they should have received recognition :)

Margaret Pilkington 30-05-2015 18:28

Re: Today in pictures

There were some far better than mine that received no recognition.
I like the ones I submitted and they are going on my wall now they are framed.
I have found a man, but he has mislaid his hammer:)

Glad your mother is on the mend M,as for the "exhibition",hmmmm....I think it was fixed either that or the judges had been in the pub all morning :D

Your pics look splendid framed,a lovely addition to anyones home but as you took the shots even more so.
I bet you could make a bob or two selling your B&W images (framed) on a well known auction site ;)

Margaret Pilkington 30-05-2015 19:58

Re: Today in pictures

Jason someone else who has seen my framed pics said exactly the same thing.

It would have been good to know how the judges came to their decisions. That said, there were a lot of very very good pictures, so it cannot have been an easy job.

Yes Ma is improving, but she will stand watching......I am sure she will be pushing the boundaries when my back is turned. :D

Today was a very long walk over Pendle Hill, I just kept saying "will just look over the next hill" and by the time there were just to many more hills to look over, I had walked and snapped away from the car for about 2 hours, and applying the theory of relativity I guessed it would be the the same time to return. This proved to be incorrect, by not stopping as often to take photos and walking in straight lines I made the return journey in just over an hour.

If you want your pics back then you need to contact them.....I was told that any that were not picked up by the owners would be destroyed.
When I went into the library a lot of the pictures were still on the display boards.
If I had taken the picture that you submitted I would definitely want it back....it would be framed and on the wall.
Now where IS that hammer?

Today was a visit to Spring Wood, The pay and display machines are fitted, signage in place, but still wrapped in plastic, so its only days now. The Bluebells are all but finished, the Ransoms are passed their best, and making way for Ferns and grasses.

1. Ransoms making the best of dappled shade.
2. Despite the eradication of the Rhododendrons policy some still remain in small areas.
3. A nice flower, but the plant is invasive.
4. Also it is one of the only bold flower colours at the moment.
5. An old wives tale, when cows lie down they are tired.
6. Ransoms in a wood pile.
7. A different wood pile, same effect.
8. Stood here the smell of Garlic is strong.
9. Red Campion, although not invasive still manages a few colourful clumps.
10 Just a quick check under the bridge to see if I can find any !

I'm glad to see your mum looking so well too - parents - they are irreplaceable!

Glad to see someone made it to the final evening of the Photo exhibition - I spoke to my aunt today but unfortunately she didn't make it as they were away. She was very enthusiastc about some of the film nights and workshop events though. You photos look fab framed Margaret - as to the voting my aunt more or less expressed what I heard from you all here - I think a popular jury would have come up with different winners but then we are not "artistes" - just amateur photography enthusiasts ;) o.O

Re: Today in pictures

Thank you Dianne...you are right.....you only ever get one mum....and they are to be celebrated every day, not just Mothers Day.
There were some stunning pictures, I do hope the owners go and collect them.....even if they then sell them.
The donations were to enable the event to be repeated next year.
I will no doubt enter that one too.....but not for the winning....for the taking part, and for seeing the photographs of others.
It does stimulate you to improve.

Some of that scenery looks familiar to me.

All but the first one which was taken at a country park. We went there to take Max for a walk but it was a children's adventure park with that wooden carving at the entrance. We diverted and went to Llanberis for the day.

Today was the first day of Summer, so goodbye to all those moist gussets, an what did I get......... a wet gusset far beyond wet, when I returned and stood in the conservatory we were just dripping over the floor......champion.

1. Hawthorn bushes are dotted around the area covered in blossom, giving them the appearance of a covering of snow. Plus when you get close a very strong "lily of the valley" perfume.
2. Its been a while since I have seen Bistort.
3. If there is a wet bit, I am stood in it.
4. Ransoms are not as spent as at other locations.
5. Plus the Bluebells are still performing here.
6. Red Campion sat above the largest drift of Forget me nots I have seen for some time.
7. Looking the length of the site.
8. There doesn't appear to be another soul around the site.
9. Perhaps I should go as well.
10. The Bracken on the left are just sending up fronds, the next time I return they will have smothered out a lot of other plants.
