They were planted initially by the Forestry Commission to provide a supply of timber, so their fate was always to be felled. It just comes as a shock when they have been there for as long as can be remembered, then they are not, but eventually they will be there again with the passage of time but I don't think I will see the dense canopy that was there prior to the felling operations.

Thanks for explaining. I know that forests have to be 'managed', at least commercially planted ones, but I always wince at the sight of trees cut down.

We usually park on the small car park on the road from Birdy Brow to Longridge, nearer to Hurst Green. It is more central. Did you see Blackpool Tower from the top of the Fell?

I am more a fan of the turbines, I have visited them on many occasions, I had not seen the hydro instalation until you posted the pictures, and in all honesty a brick shed with railings is not as low profile as I thought it would be.

Today in Pictures, a somewhat strenuous expedition today, it was uphill all the way, and even coming down was uphill, well it felt like it.

1. From this point you can imagine you are strolling through the industrial revolution.
2. Always remember to turn around, there may be a viewpoint you have missed.
3. Stone would have been in plentiful supply for dry stone walls, the quarry is just here.
4. The remains of a trolley possibly pushed over the edge when the quarry ceased operation.
5. In the words of Alan Dedicoat, you have to be in it to wet it......well something like that.
6. This is as far as the trail takes us today, unless I slip then I might just have a few days of hospital food.
7. If you use the tree as a point of reference you can see where the last snap was taken from.
8. Moonscapes left by the Victorians.
9. Listen.......you can just hear the hammers and chisels from the past... they are building the foundations our future was based on.
10. Bang.....The moonscapes of the past are looked upon by the explorations into the future.

Yes Dave but turbines have to be turned off when it's too windy, how Irish is that? Solar panels only work in the daytime.
Hydro schemes can run 24/7 with very little limitations.

A brick shed with railings there's plenty of them in the rubble valley.

I don`t agree Dave,if you look at the River Hyndburn, particularly where it flows past Asda, the river has been encased with concrete sides. The speed of the water when in flood is far greater than it would be if it were a natural river bed.
Hyndburn Hydro would be a step forward in my opinion.

I wouldn't want one either, simply because the river "stink" is flourishing nowadays and wouldn't want something like that upsetting the wildlife on there. Personally I don't mind the windmills.

To be honest I hadn't though about the bits where it has been covered, encased or otherwise restricted, I suppose there it would be acceptable, but if you look at the one in Whalley it is right at the weir, and that was a bit of a draw for tourists photographers and general walkers.

Today in Pictures, a wet experience from start to finish, drizzle, the one that really wets you, was present all through our expedition.

1. A farmer sets off to feed the turbines.
2. Oak Gall, a result of the gall wasp inserting its egg in the plants bud, the result is the tree protects itself by forming the gall, and in doing so protects the wasp from predators.
3. Despite the weather the place is packed.
4. The overflow from what was the top reservoir as it feeds into Jackhouse.
5. The stream that feeds the overflow, which in turn feeds the reservoir.
6. Another tributary to the stream that feeds the stream that feeds.........you get the gist.
7. If it stands still for any length of time it gets a coating of moss and lichens.
8. I just put that wood there to get my camera out.
9. The central island that is sanctuary for the wildlife, and nesting ground for some of the birds.
10. The stream that fed the main stream that went over the overflow, into jackhouse comes out here, it now heads for Oswaldtwistle but that is another story.

Today in Picture, it was snowing when I set off, it stopped for a bit started again, and that is how the expedition went.

1. I'm over here taking a snap of over there.
2. The path is up there, and I am down here getting my feet wet.
3. I was going to go up woodnook vale path, but for some reason I got distracted, I am now following the wet bits of Priestly Clough, I am easily distrac..................ooh look at that.
4. It is heavily snowing at this point, although the camera is not picking it up, I am stood in the wet bits again.
5. Time to get back on the footpath, its up there on the left.
6. There, I am back up and on the path again.
7. The reason for my walk today, Shoe Mill.
8. Apart from remnants of a few buildings, you don't get a sense of the amount of industry that occupied this space.
9. Approaching "five arches" I have no idea what this chute did, it appears to transport a stream across this stream for some reason.
10. "Five arches" and time to turn around.

Today in Pictures, there is very little snow around here, so we went looking for it, and found it. Plus finding a new path, the "I wonder where that goes" very quickly turned into "I wonder where we are".

1. The environment is so harsh, is it any wonder trees grow on a slant.
2. Long ago they took the time to put walls either side of the cart track.
3. There are more walls than you can throw a stone at, if you could find one.
4. All the dwellings that used to be serviced by this cart track are now just remnants of their former glory.
5. This is Calf Hey and Mulberry heights, we ricocheted off to the right, and into an area never trod by me before.
6. A complex of buildings succumbing to the effects of gravity over a long period of time.
7. I am traversing untrodden snow, and it makes that squeaky cheese noise.
8. Looking back is Calf Hey and Ogden reservoirs, so I know what is behind, its forward that is uncertain.
9. We are travelling along a reasonably trodden path, however the footprints are all going in the other direction.
10. At this point I know I have to head for the tree line over to the right, so it looks like a hike through the fields.

Today in Pictures a less energetic outing today, but a cold experience enhanced by the snow.

1. Here you can see 10 of the twelve turbines.
2. I think I am developing a dry stone wall obsession.
3. Most of the snow you see is untrodden, give me a bit more time and I can remedy that.
4. Time for my bloater paste sandwiches and tic-tac water.
5. They are amongst us.
6. I am getting a strange urge to make a large mountain out of mashed potatoes.
7. Another sett of turbines in the distance.
8. On a clear day you can see jodrell bank, and the skyscrapers of Manchester.
9. Reading the inscription and another close by I am aware that some families have to deal with tragedies within families.
10. And with that we head back down a very icy lane to the car.

I just love number 8......what a shot.

Chilly Sunday morning on the canal bank at Oswaldtwistle with snow on the tops at Green Howarth just visible.
Crested grebe (duck?) I think not a native species?
The kingfisher at Church landing was just too quick for me.
Great that the little cafe at Rishton bridge has reopened for a welcoming brew too :)

3. Most of the snow you see is untrodden, give me a bit more time and I can remedy that.
4. Time for my bloater paste sandwiches and tic-tac water.

Number 3 is anothe fantastic shot, though they are all lovely...that one takes the cake for me.

A couple from yesterday, the calm before the storm. Then today's delights: a good foot of snow, and over my knees in the drifts. Lots of shovelling, but took time to snap a few.

Today in Pictures, I set off thinking Pendle Hill would be covered in snow, I arrived to find it was on the decline... Still there was enough to get a wet and cold knee.

1. It was only a short visit, so concentrated on the gates and walls.
2. In its day Pendle was divides into sections over the bits able to be farmed.
3. Looking across the valley the Trough of Bowland still has snow, in the valley Clitheroe is off to the right.
4. Whoever marked out the route of this particular wall must have used a snake.
5. Back at the gate again, with the Trough again.
6. I do find this gate with all the dry stone walls converging photogenic.
7. Once a cart track over the tops.
8. Right that's it, enough of the gate, its time to go.

Maybe "putain neige" would have been better;) ... and when it warms up a little ... say, around May ... I'll take pics of icicles from the melting snow on my roof.

Where were you some three years ago Jason....?I saw loads of icicles. Haven't seen any this year, but only because I haven't looked.
I bet there are icicles in Ma's backyard right now....but I haven't been out back.....already had one fall......i don't want to risk my old bones again.
Might not be lucky enough to fall on something soft next time.

Three years ago I was probably looking around abandoned buildings :D

Honestly,I've not seen a 'icicle' for about a decade,I remeber when we use to get dangerously large ones that hung over the heads of joe public as they walked under the railway arches in town.
I may have to go on the hunt later while I'm grabbing a few moon pics...

Early this morning I went to check on the kiln that I fired at the guild last night.
At the front door I noticed icicles. Grabbing my cell phone (all I had with me) I went on the hunt. The back door wouldn't open, so I stumbled through knee deep snow and minus 14 degrees to get these. Here you go, Jason! They would look prettier later in the day when the sun hits them.

I had the same idea ... as I sipped on hot choc and rum after my morning shovel ... have to shovel out a play pen for my munchkin in the back yard.:D Great minds think alike, eh.

No BBQ's for the Canadians this week then eh ;)

In the good old days we had snow like that much more than the sprinkles we get today and we got it on a regular basis too...global warming? Hmmm.

Nowadays, we only get a few inches max and the ruddy stuff melts within a day or two.
Back in the day folk cleared snow off their paths and the pavement with nothing more than a hand shovel.
They'd throw the unwanted snow into the road, obviously we can't do this nowadays as the number of parked cars has increased dramatically.

Eeee the good old days..... no-one had central heating, just a coal fire in one room wishing and hoping it would warm the upstairs.....sadly that wasn't the case, much like a few members, I too had to scrape ice from the 'inside' of my bedroom window :D

Margaret Pilkington 05-02-2015 14:58

Re: Today in pictures

I made ice lollies on the inside of my bedroom window bottom.
Ma used to put a hot brick in our bed to warm it up....or an oven sheet
These were removed before we got into bed.
The only time a fire was lit in the bedroom was if someone in the house was seriously ill.

Today in Pictures, if this snow keeps vanishing I may go to Canada, although I will want to be home for dinners.

1. I was heading for Troy Quarry, however I had a sudden "I wonder where that goes" moment, and two hours later was still heading for the quarry.
2. I'v no idea the name of this place, although Jamestone Quarry is just out of sight.
3. Another lost community, it looks like farm buildings and workers cottages.
4. Just so you know, I am flat out in the white stuff for this shot.
5. More remnants of buildings, although the footprint of the walls gives no clue as to the shape of the building.
6. Right its time to head in the direction of Troy.
7. Found it, but there is little time to properly dwell and soak up the history.
8. With all that ice I don't think I will go any closer to the edge.
9. The stone pillar that remains actually was the base for the excavation machinery.
10. When the weather is kinder the rock face entertains climbers both going up and down as well, the top I have just been along has metal poles hammered in to attach the safety ropes. Plus there are disclamer notices saying if you fall off and break both legs not to go running to them.

I usually find them by wondering where that goes, it is an unpredictable pastime, sometimes I misplace myself and end up being out for a lot longer than anticipated.
I get a strange pleasure from it though, and its always a bonus if it entertains as well.

I thought about that, davemac, I really did - when I was kneeling in the snow, trying to shoot upwards through the icicles. Wetness would have been preferable to freezing cold knees hah hah!
