Today in Pictures, through the Dunkenhalgh Estate, not sure if I was on a footpath or an animal trail for the start of the exercise.
1. Start point, bovine pruning. 2. A badly damaged tree still giving it a go. 3. This looks a bit sinister to me. 4. The other footpath is just beyond the trees. 5. Another tree that fell over. 6. I am normally on the other side of the river. 7. Home to roost. 8. An impressive stand of Beech trees. 9. Further down the same tree line. 10. This is the furthest point and back on the right side of the river. |

I really liked Margarets sketchy pics, so wanted to see some of my pics given the same treatment.I can`t take any credit as I didn`t do the work myself but a nice effect I think.

Today in Pictures, a mid morning walk on the banks of the River Calder. it was wet underfoot, drizzling, overcast, and cold............marvelouse
1. Under the bridge on Burnley Road. 2. Back under the bridge, its just around the bend. 3. St. James' Church from the river bank. 4. The open aspect makes the trees grow on a bit of a slant. 5. A stream meanders into the river. 6. Its had a harsh life. 7. This was on the footpath, at this point I was in Simonstone. 8. Overcast just doesn't describe it, I think its time for a cappuccino and a fig newton. 9. All this is required to boil the kettle. 10. Just going up the steps when I found this pipe that long ago ceased to function. |

Today in Pictures, a walk along Clayton Fields, someone had pulled down all the "footpath closed" signs so I marched through regardless.
1. Starting along the canal. 2. Along the Clayton Fields. 3. Its a sharp but clear day. 4. Same direction just a bit further down. 5. This is the reason for the footpath closure. 6. Almost clear blue skies. 7. The frost is persisting in the shadows. 8. The Pine trees on the far hill are the ones that lead down to Dean Clough. 9. Something you would expect to rub cream on, frozen droplets. 10. Possibly and old style, or part of a stone fence. |
Re: Today in pictures
Lovely frozen droplets in #9.

I have just had another week at Byng House 5 star hotel at Southport, a free holiday provided by the British Legion for military veterans.
No. 1 & 2, Southport at night taken through my hotel room window about four hundred yards away right on the promenade. No.3,4 & 5. St Helens Glass museum. No. 6.7.8 & 9, statues in the museum. Not sure what the men in number 8 are up to. No.10 Old mangle and dolly tubs. |
Re: Today in pictures
Been there, seen that, done it! :D We were up there this Summer Gremlin, Southpot as a matter of course as we stop at my Dads (in Maghull) so a 20 minute run. And as to Pilkys Glass, it was the second choice because the NW transport Museum was closed when we went to visit. :o (Okay, late Sept & mid week so I can't really expect to much) :)

Re: Today in pictures
Not only still going but it had been totally refurbished.
It's my third visit and I can't wait to be invited again. If I was allowed to pay to go I would willingly do so. All they ask for in return for all the hospitality, food, entertainment and a good rest with people of similar ages is a donation if you can afford to. All the groups start and finish on Wednesday for either one or two weeks so within a few days everybody is getting to know each other. |

Today in Pictures is a walk along the Woodnook Vale trail, or thowd railway line to Bash. With dips down to the Clough bottom.
1. Setting off up the trail. 2. Dipping down, literally, to the bridge that takes you over to Priestly Clough side. 3. Dipping down again further up, This waterfall is adjacent to Rothwell House, it used to have a bridge over until it mysteriously "fell down". The local scuttle is that the farmer knocked it down to stop people walking past the front of his farm, it worked. 4. The upstream view from what was once the bridge. 5. Back on the Vale, looking across to the other hillside, this would be in the area of Bedlam/Green Haworth. 6. Looking back down the path we have just travelled up. 7. "Five Arches" is as far as we go today, its now back down along the waters edge. 8. Not sure of the function here, it looks like it used to take the stream over another stream, but this is an area of heavy industrial use, factories, Mills and a Mine to name a few. 9. The bridge over Shoe Mill. 10. Here we are back on the Vale and down to the car. |

Out and about a bit today...on my own in Manchester with just my camera.
What a 'brill' day I had. Never spent a penny(well, not exactly true - I had to 'go' in the John Rylands Library...but it was FREE). Hope you like the pics of my day. I won't get into trouble this time...only ten for you. 1) singing a song...and very melodic it was too! 2) A little night music - except tit was the middle of the day. 3) Bridal attendants - I am reluctant to call them maids. A Wedding today At St Anne's Church 4) The bride...she looked very nervous...well, she was about to tie a knot with her tongue that she wouldn't ever undo with her teeth. 5) what is the collective noun for a group of Santa's? 6) I like this. 7) inside John Rylands Library |
Re: Today in pictures
I didn't get time to put in the titles for the last three pics....here goes:
8) I don't know what this building is, but I love it. 9) Yummy stuff...but all adds to the waistline. 10) Fungi - not sure what kind of fungi, but Dave will be along in a minute and I just know he will know what they are :D |

Then someone mentioned it, or maybe I saw it on TV....but it has been my aim to go and visit. Yesterday my ambling took me down Brazenose Street, and the JRL is just across the road. Now, my visit yesterday was really to take pictures. Nothing else, no shopping(even though I was at 'The Markets'). I couldn't resist going across the road and taking a peek inside. I absolutely loved it, and could very easily have spent my whole afternoon in there. I took the pics to justify the visit(as if!). I will be making a return visit sometime to satisfy my need to have a much better look. |

1) This is specially for Dave in Germany. I thought he might like it! 2) Big Santa - he's the union Boss. 3) they say if you want to get ahead - get a hat...well, plenty of choice here. 4) Does cooking big german sausages really take so much concentration? 5) Totem. An exhibit in the John Rylands Library. 6) A ceiling boss in the John Rylands Library. 7) The Town Hall clock tower seen from Brazenose Street. 8) NO KNOCKERS - the front door of the JRL(sorry Sue - couldn't resist) 9) Inside the John Rylands Library - I don't know what this is depicting. 10) A bit of an Animal......Animal mugs. The Cat ones are for me and Sue! (I want the ginger one!) I hope you enjoy looking at the pics as much as I enjoyed taking them. |

I love the way none of the santas you have pictured are not that garish bright red but more subtle shades of brown and maroon - autumn colours. As for the cats - I'll let you have the ginger one - our past feline was a dead spit for the B/W one even down to the white back legs. Judging by the sticker on the bigger mug the price was quite reasonable. |
Re: Today in pictures
Sue, I would have bought myself that mug, but I took very little money with me...and what I did take was for something to eat......I could have bought it because in the end I decided to wait until I got back home, to eat.
I wish I had bought it. That is the story of my life opportunities missed! if you like my pics, you can see more here: Flickr: margaret.pilkington47's Photostream |

Incidentally When I lived there I used to fish around in the 'river' for shards of pottery. The house was full of antiques when we first moved in. There was a plate rail all around the living room full of stuff, and two clocks: a grandmother which worked fine, and a huge old grandfather clock. It lay on it's back in the empty front room - dusty and spooky looking. That house had flagstones in the kitchen. It was full of millipedes, wood lice and of course spiders who feasted on all these. |
