I really like the patches of sunlight in the distance of #1, and the graveyard shot. All of them capture the feel of late November. You still have more leaves on the trees than we do :)

Thats Pendle Hill, I love walking around it, the leaves are starting to carpet the floor, so not much time left for them to be on the trees.

Reading the headstones is like reading a book about a families life, the death of the parents and the children that died at an early age, and even some that died in foreign lands and never made it back home. There are even a couple of servants that served the Trapps-Lomax family, they lived in Clayton Hall. I have spent a fair bit of time just reading them, and it becomes apparent that those that could afford it had large families to compensate for the tragedies that befell them. Of course those that survived went on to have their own families and so would be on there own headstone.

I agree with you that graveyards are very interesting places to visit. Looking into my family tree I've found that poorer families often had a lot of children too, but we don't see them in graveyards so often as they couldn't afford monuments for their graves. I find myself wondering if people back then became somewhat desensitized to losing a child. I can't imagine they would, but then how did they cope with all that sadness? It's easy to imagine that folk back in the 1800s were quite different to us, and they were in many ways (their view of marriage being more of a business arrangement for example). But when I see their photographs, their faces could be the faces of people today. That's the power of photography!

It was a road i`d never driven before, but I did recognize a couple of place names - Grassington & Aysgarth (I`ve only heard of Aysgarth because my step son works there) I also went passed a firing range for tanks, i`m guessing it was part of Catterick Army Barracks.

How odd! Probably done by someone who's never been there. We were in Richmond a few years ago and the keep is the only thing you can see from the market square in the centre of town. The rest of the castle is down by the river.

I really enjoyed seeing photos of the Manchester Christmas Market. These were taken last weekend at a Christmas show I was invited to take part in with my pottery. The building is a stand-alone painting studio for the owner, Janet Bailey, who paints Canadian folk art. It's on a gorgeous 5 acre lot, and her house is just opposite at the other side of the 'garden'. It was a very enjoyable time with really nice people. Nothing stuffy or snobbish about it. Lots of people showed up to buy paintings, jewellery, clothes and pots, but the focus was just on giving them (and us) a lovely environment to chat and eat home made goodies. It's helping me get into the Christmas spirit, just a little.

I believe I'm going to be offered a space to work permanently in this building, but that would mean paying rent, and ramping up my business again. Not sure I want to do that! I would have to buy all new equipment as I gave most of mine away. It's a decision I can't make hastily.

Not quite... It's a delicate situation. The lady who is renting there now will leave when her husband passes away (he has cancer). His prognosis isn't good, and she and the owner are looking down the road. They have approached me to see if I'm interested. It's a gorgeous spot, but I had decided to retire. It will take a fair bit of $ to start up again. My hubby is looking nervous Hah hah. But lots of time to decide, hopefully for all concerned :)

The tree is perched on the edge of the rock face, it must have a firm hold as the terrain and climate is not very friendly.
The whole area is known as the valley of stone for the number of workings and quarries that litter the area. The area fed the industrial revolution by providing stone for the factories to be built and flags and cobble stones to pave the streets, it must have been a very hard way to put food on the table.

The christmas market was shut up early because of the weather, they were getting a right battering from the gusts, and there were no customers, some of the stall holders had gone to a lot of trouble to no avail.

I feel for the vendors. I had a market stall myself for 9 years. It went from mid May to the end of October each year - that covered all weather conditions!

You have to be given credit for giving it a go whilst under enemy fire.
Will look forward to a more relaxed presentation of your holiday in pictures when you get home.

Today in Pictures, the clouds are still interesting, but not as good as yesterday. So off we went to Hapton Quarry, and a visit to the turbines.

1. After a schlep through the woods and up the slope we arrive at the watering hole often visited by the herds of roaming wildebeest, I might have made that last bit up.
2.Looking past the watering hole and past the quarry on the edge of Kings Highway you can see the old brickworks and Whinney Hill tip.
3. Spoil piles and the rock face of the quarry.
4. The same picture from the opposite side.
5. Amongst this chaos of rock there is a small section of blue granite cobbles.
6. Mine's bigger than yours.
7.Looking over Altham and Hapton toward Pendle Hill.
8. I think these walls were there to support the moving baskets that transported stone from the quarry down to the road.
9. Lichens and moss, even in this harsh environment provide a splash of colour.
10. The light is going so its time to head home.

Interesting photos again . :)

Going off recent photos I'm beginning to think that turbines are less an eyesore than pylons .

There are pros and cons for both I think, but the Turbines are located in clusters on high ground, and pylons are right across the countryside and right through built up areas in long, long, lines with wires connecting them all up. I dont know though if pylons are required to transport the generated electricity. From a photographic point of view it has to be turbines for me.

A bit of a mixed bag today.
1. A stream running through the hills
2. Low clouds again today.
3. I`m assuming this was once used to transport coal out of the mine.
4. Let me out!
5. Same bird as 4, a Red Kite.
6. What you looking at?
7. Two more owls.
8. Muncaster Castle.
9. OK, if you`re tired, you can lean on me for a while.
10. Sizergh Castle.

Number 1 is a cracker, my sort of shot, and I would have taken exactly the same snap had I been there.

Today in Pictures, just a few snaps from the Woodlands.

1. One for the woodpeckers.
2. The mild spell has brought out a few fungi.
3. Mostly off the trees and on the floor.
4. Found another in the middle of the nettles.
5. The stream that goes through the middle of the Woodlands.

Still no proper internet here - but will try to post a few pics from yesterday and today's walk. Was a relief to get out again after 5 days solid fog -thick enough to cut with a knife!
A few pics around the lane near my house - the medal is hanging on the sanctuary along with various other offerings! End of autumn colours - spot the heron in the fields on one photo -they remind me of little grey men sitting hunched up - can't get close enough to get a good shot with this camera... Found a beautifully restored villa attached to a crumbling old farm about a mile away -(8 &9) then a picture of the sun going down an my way home through the little copse of trees just up the lane.

Today in Pictures, It was windy, cold, driving rain, and limited visibility, I gave up in the end, it was difficult to keep stood up.

1. Looking back down the lane I have just driven up, Haslingden at the bottom.
2. Gate posts long since stoned up.
3. In the distance past the gate post is Hameldon Hill, follow it left and you can see the trees on the Coppice.
4. The Halo, at this point the wind has got up, and the rain is now horizontal.
5. Leaning into the wind for stability, Haslingden below, with Helmshore just a bit further, and in the valley of the hills far away is Manchester.
6. As far as we go today, time to head back.
7. I did intend to wait until it went a bit darker to get the best of the lights, however the driving wind, the cold, and rain took the fun out of it, so a photo for another day.

You don't have to explain, I think nutmegs about describes it to a T. I've just checked and they are the same.

Today in Pictures, a day of heavy cloud and blue bits.

1. I came all this way, and the sun is shining on my house.
2. The reservoir is just over that hill, but we go left.
3. Well...... we go left now.
4. You can just make out Dean Clough Reservoir, off centre to the right.
5. Churn Clough in a bit of the blue bit, it soon passed.
6. The recent rain has swollen the streams.
7. A boundary stone placed in 1892 by the Padiham and Hapton Local Board.
8. & 9. More stream shots.
10. Full circle, and time to head for the road.
