Today in Pictures, A slight departure from my parks quest, Huncoat Colliery site. Just bought my wife a new fridge freezer, you should have seen her little face light up when she opened the door.

1. Not the colliery, the Pals this morning, slight diversion.
2. Its the 2.05 to Colne.
3. As they say, you have to be in it to wet it.
4. The bed of this stream is covered in shale rock, fracking?
5. What are you two looking at.
6. Devils bit Scabious, I'm sure I got that as a child.
7. Almost at the turn around point.
8. I think its a Hawkbit.
9. I think I just heard a Lion.
10. That one is going in the opposite direction, and now time for a brew and a fig newton, or possibly a garibaldi.

No great skill involved, It made it easy by hovering in the Ferries wake. Mind you, it helps when someone's holding a Bun or a pie in their mitts nearby. :D

I am not a sporty person so didn't really give them much attention, if it wasn't for the dads shouting "KICK IT" from the sidelines I wouldn't really have paid much attention.

The Mosque has been there for a long while now, not in it's present state. It has been rebuilt. My Auntie lives on Richmond Hill Street and she can hear them being called to prayer. It is on the corner of Fountain Street

What a weird morning.

Today I decided to get on the train to Burnley Central.

The Train stopped at the Burnley Manchester Road station and readied I myself to get off at central station. Quite some time passed and what was with all the scenery? Oops. I then realised that I had got on the wrong train.

Where do I end up? Hebden Bridge. I decided to have a walk around Hebden and wow what a beautiful town it is. Opted out of walking back to the train station and after all you cannot get the train to the central station in Burnley from Hebden and I didn't feel like walk across Burnley.

Took the bus from Hebden. Only for it to break down outside of Todmorden. Had to wait 30-45 mins for another bus to come along. Finally I made it to Burnley. Quick stop at PC World and back to Accy. Bumped into my mum and after seeing her on the bus I then bumped into my Dad going into GiftPrint.

Anyway. I took some photos.

Is it me or is everyone getting better at taking pics?

Have enjoyed looking at them all - for me ChurchFc -No 6 is the winner in the B'pool shots. Love Jen's silhouettes, Turtles reflections, DiG's L'pool and the gull, Max's selections and Dave's -like Turtle I tried to photograph a 'shroom this weekend with Dave in mind - not up to scratch though I will post it! We did eat them by the way and I'm still alive to tell the tale ;) Was away for the weekend for a wedding -photos of that tomorrow.
Today's will be of yesterday's walk around the Ticino Park at Torre D'Isola showing the woodlands, river and rice fields before and after harvesting!

Nice varied selection there, A tip for photographing mushrooms, you have to get lower than the top of the mushroom, the hardest part of that for me is getting back up, and I have noticed I am making noises when I get up again.

4. The path to the top.

7. Heading away from the face to take the slope down to the car park.
8. I think those turbines are following me.
9. Taking the downward path.
10. A compilation of just a few of the fungi I found.

Photos of the Italo-Spanish wedding I attended in Pavia at the weekend. A very international affair there were guests from Manchester, Copenhagen, Madrid, Valencia and even a girl from the Orkney Islands was there!
1 Spanish steps! A little Spanish girl on the steps outside the chapel
2 The bride and grrom arrived in a Fiat 500
3 Fresco inside the chapel
4 Frescoed ceiling
5 Coriandoli (what we would call confetti in England) ready to shower th bride and groom
6 Someone will have to sweep it all up -hopefully they found the bride's earing which got lost at this point!
7 The reception venue - Gli Orti Borromei
8 My table was "Thyme"- each had a center piece of different herbs
9 Confetti (what we would call sugared almonds!) All the guests receive a gift of these plus a memento which in this case was a small cactus.
10 Pata negra -brought over especially for the reception from Spain

Is that the full set of parks now Dave? It still looks like only very slight signs of autumn there -still quite green. Here we are the same -everything seems to be about 20/25 days behind this year, they are just harvesting now what would normally have been cut by mid-September.

A few more shots from the walk on Sunday including my first attempt at photographing mushrooms! There were lots of heron about but I didn't manage to catch any of them...
1 The farm where I stayed in Torre D'Isola
2 The river Ticino from above
3 Sunlight in the woodlands
4 Signs of autumn
5 These plants are known locally as "ink plants" the berries stain bright purple
6 Winter fuel
7 Sunlit path we came along
8 The mushroom! They are known as "drums and sticks" in dialect because of the long stalk and flat heads (Mazze di tamburo)
9 Coming out of the woods towards the rice fields
10 Dead thistles - back to the start of the walk over looking the harvested rice field

One more to go, there are 11 parks in the borough, I have to visit Rhyddings to complete this particular quest, I know I have visited Rhyddings before, but the next visit puts a full stop on that set.
The hedgerows are full of Blackberries and Oak trees are sagging with all the acorns on them, so its been a good year for fruits and berries. The trees are a bit more species specific with regard to Autumn colour, the Horse Chestnuts have gone brown and dropped most of their leaves, Beech are just starting to go brown and the rest are still very green,. I don't think Autumn will arrive on mass until we have a bit of frost to bring them all in line.

Its amazing how similar the countryside is to here, number 7 could be a walk I have done, and 10 has an end of the season feel about it, nice.

Re: Today in pictures

In the Ticino Park there is a mixture of natural deciduous and farmed Poplar woodland - there is a change in level going down and along the river and I can see what you mean about it being similar there Dave. Away from there is is very different as it's so very flat, great for cycling but it can be a bit boring for walking - most of the North of Italy is on a massive plain called the Pianura Padana. The land around Pavia is mostly a rice-growing area because of the proliferation of rivers and canals which naturally made it perfect for that kind of cultivation. Around Cremona where I now live (just 1 hours drive away from Pavia) it's mostly maize which is cultivated for producing fodder for milking cows. There is less water here though the River Po is nearby - irrigation water for the fields here comes down in canals from Lake Iseo which is near to Garda. Cremona is known as "the milk-bowl of Italy" they say that as many cows as people live in the area. It's very, very flat here too as you will have noticed from previous photos of mine. One of the things I miss most about Lankyshire is the hills and valleys - and of course the weather!! :D

I have just got up after an afternoon nap as I was kept awake last night between 1-30pm and 4pm. This series of shots will illustrate why. Our doorbell went at 1-30 and our next-door-but-one neighbours were there saying their house was on fire! Husband called the fire brigade and I got next door to evacuate their house, just in case, waking 2 year old Manu who is in some of the shots -he thought it was very exciting. It seems our neighbours had left a candle alight at their Hindu prayer altar in the spare bedroom -luckily the wife woke up with coughing as their rooms were already full of smoke and they got out in time -could have been a tragedy. I only thought to get my camera once things were under control so missed the flames and much of the smoke, as well as the men going in with their axes and breathing gear... Sorry if some of the photos are a bit out of focus.

Yes, but we had fish and chips across the road from Jacksons...that one is next on our list of eateries to try.
I had a Seniors portion of Haddock with chips, peas and I could have had bread and butter and a cup of tea.....but I like proper tea, not tea dust in a bag...so I left the bread and butter, and had Sprite to drink.

I don't think the format in which they are shot makes much difference(well from a viewers point that is - from a technical point maybe shooting the pics in RAW format has some benefits).....it is the 'eye' that has it. If you have a good eye for a picture then it beats all the post production fiddling you can shake a stick at.
If you have no eye for a shot then, post production fiddling won't cure your inadequacies....and it will leave you frustrated.
Keep on doing what you are doing...I like it!

I think it gives a better understanding of whats happening in the camera if you give RAW a go. I tried it myself for a while, RAW means the camera captures what it sees without any compression or conversion, this gives you the scope to edit better, you then have to convert it to JPEG for programs to see it. However if you shoot in JPEG format, the camera software when you take a picture, looses data at the dark end and light end to reduce the size of the picture, it then converts it to JPEG format internally. I have simplified the explanation so I didn't confuse myself.

I read it and understand it when I am reading it, but somewhere along the way I forget it..... if someone asks me what it is I would have to look it up.

My Lumix G camera will shoot RAW pics, but I have to hold my hand up and say that I have stuck to JPEG, purely because it is what I know...even though I have programs which will convert RAW data...I haven't used it.
Shame on me!

Shame on me!

If you just want to take pictures, view, then post them, JPEG is the best way to do it. Raw is very time consuming, and have to be edited as RAW, then converted to JPEG before you can view them in other programs. My camera has the option to shoot both RAW and JPEG at the same time, but does use memory a bit sharpish, I found the end results were very similar for my type of photography and didn't really justify the extra time I spent editing and converting RAW. So its JPEG for me as well.

I feel for the people involved, but thank goodness no one was hurt. Candles scare me, so I won't have them in my house.

Just had a bit of a catch up on the thread - some lovely shots again from everyone. All the technical stuff goes over my head I'm afraid - I just like to point and press! It's been raining here for the last two days so no pics for me though I still have loads to sort from my holidays yet - when I get round to it.
I love candles despite what happened to my neighbours - but I always have them in safe holders. It was a difficult day all round as my husband gave in his notice here at work that afternoon - he's been head-hunted to another farm, luckily not too far away. About a mile as the crow flies, so I'll have a busy month ahead getting everything sorted for a house move in the first 10 days of November, as his job goes with tied housing. Should be plenty of new photo opportunities in the new place hopefully once we have settled in! In the meantime I'll try to keep up here but fear I'll have a lot less time on my hands - wish I wasn't such a hoarder - loads of stuff to go through! :D

Change is always unsettling. As a fellow almost-reformed hoarder (married to a minimalist), I sympathize. But moves can have a side benefit - the possibility of finding treasures you'd forgotten about! Best wishes for this new start.

Today in Pictures, I got lost in the moment here, but I was watching the clock, so only skimmed the walk, but my interest has been peaked.

1. I am drawn to wet bits, I think it is an evolution thing, and our journey from the sea to land.
2. You will notice there is no footpath here, I am covered in sticky willy seed heads, I thought I had found a feathery fungi, bottom right of the picture, until it moved, it's my dogs tail, Gormless or what !
3. Thats my eventual destination.St James Church.
4. The River Calder as it meanders toward Martholme Viaduct.
5. You have no idea how difficult it is taking a photo, on stilts, in the middle of the river.
6. The pylons as they march across the countryside.
7. St. James Church, Altham, an Anglican Parish Church.
8. Built in 1140, when King Stephen was on the throne, and rebuilt in 1512.
9. The tower was added in 1859, the entire construction is made out of sandstone with a stone roof. It is a grade 2 listed building.
10. Stone heads are carved into the stonework of the windows, they are a collection of people wearing crowns, skullcaps, turbans, also dodgy haircuts and handlebar moustaches. Some of the carvings have been lost over time as sandstone erodes with the weather.

With that my time was up, but my interest wasn't, I hope you have found this as interesting as I did.

No. 5: how on earth did you...? I know you like moisture, but this was going above and beyond - unless there was a bridge!

What a marvellous old church. I have several relatives tied in with it in the usual ways: baptisms, marriages and burials. May I 'borrow' one or two of your shots for my tree? I'll give you credit of course. :)

I was not stood on a bridge, I take it you don't believe the stilt explanation, if you look at the picture before it gives you a clue.

You may use what ever pictures you have a use for, I will email some pictures that are not reduced in size, this keeps the quality for placing on other sites.

Congrats to your niece! My Mum used to breed Llhasas - cute, but nasty little beggars as I recall. She then switched to Shih Tzus as she thought their temperment was better. She spoiled her own dogs rotten too - always will, I guess. She has a Yorkie now that really knows how to boss her about.

2. I reckon this is the split between the two.

4. I've walk around that weir from the other side.
5. The field over there is Clayton Fields.
6. At this point I question if shirt sleeves was such a good idea.
7. You cant tell where the trees finish and the pylons start.
8. At this point the heavens opened.
9. Back at the start point, a bit moister than when I started.

Today in Pictures, takes me to Rishton dip, and up to the Motorway.

1. Not sure if this is part of a footpath, the fields right in front of the Dunkenhalgh, notice the bovine pruning around the lower branches.
2. The reason I climbed over a locked gate, a fungi fest.
3. You can just make out the building through the trees.
4. That's the direction we are going.
5. The path that leads to the motorway.
6. You know the saying "when cows lie down........they are tired"
7. The wet bits and brown bits, but today,...... no moist bits.
8. One minute the sun is out.
9. Its like being in "World of Leather".
10. When I first started to walk this way (don't mention talcum powder) the River Hyndburn flowed along the far tree line

1. Not sure if this is part of a footpath, the fields right in front of the Dunkenhalgh, notice the bovine pruning around the lower branches.
2. The reason I climbed over a locked gate, a fungi fest.
3. You can just make out the building through the trees.
4. That's the direction we are going.

Love the trees in number 1. In the collage of 'shrooms -number 3 are very tasty -here they call them "chiodini" or "little nails" if you look at them you can see why. They need blanching in boiling water - then are nice with a rich tomato sauce with herbs, sausage and pork loin -typically served with polenta - it's delicious! :p

It never crosses my mind when I find them to think in terms of edibility, my mind is set in the "what is best photographically" option, that, and can I lie down without nettling my nutmegs.

Today in Pictures, on a day when I am coughing like a horse and stuff is coming down my nose that would not look out of place on Doctor Who. So with as much enthusiasm as I could muster Spring Wood was todays destination.

1. As you wood expect trees (see what I did there).
2. Now that we have had light frosts the leaves are falling.
3. It only seems two minutes that I was here looking for the late flowering Bluebells.
4. Clitheroe is in the distance.
5. A bit further around and you can see Longridge Fell in the distance.
6. Whalley to the left, and Longridge Fell further on.
7. Back on the trail.
8. Its downhill all the way from here.
9. To finish off fungi a go-go.
10. Soon the fungi will disappear when the frost gets heavy, what will I do with myself..
