5 & 6. Haig Coliery again.
7. By the harbour, anyone know what the tall thing is.

9 & 10. Bassenthwaite Lake.

Thank you gpick for posting the photos and bringing back memories for me.
When I was on the tankers we had a contract with Albright and Wilson whose chemical plant was right on the top of the hill after you passed through the town. I always enjoyed the drive up there especially as I was getting paid for the pleasure.
Like you I always thought the Council Estate must have the best view of any estate in the world.
Two years ago we stayed at Haverigg and had a train ride to Whitehaven, what a difference there is now, especially the harbour which used to be full of rotting boats and filth.
The new apartments on the marina are going for up to a millions quids, you could have bought half of the town for that twenty years ago.
I took a few photos when we were there but I have no idea what the little tower was for. Just to the left of it is another round thing, maybe they are vents for the old mine.

I think you are right about the tower Gremlin, just found this.
"the ventilation shaft named Candlestick Chimney, is part of a colliery engine house built in 1850"
Whitehaven, Cumbria

Thanks for the information, maybe the white building to the right of the tower in my picture was the engine house which has since been cleaned up.

Thanks for the pics of Whitehaven - I love that part of the world, especially the journey from here in Morecambe. I've done the train ride from Carlisle right round to Lancaster via Barrow all round the coast - so beautiful. Stayed at Ravenglass a couple of times - nice small place for a short break. Thanks again all of you.

A few more from Whitehaven for you Dianne,
The railway lines runs right under the town and emerges by the harbour.

There is still a bit of industry by the dock.

You pass the nuclear site on the train, photos taken through the window.

Yesteday I had the honour of attending a lecture by a Nobel prize winner at UCLAN in Preston.

The person in question is Professor Sir Harry Kroto FRS, Nobel Laureate in chemistry in 1995. He is in Preston to receive an honorary fellowship at the university's graduation ceremony.

Known as one of the team who discovered buckminsterfullerene or buckyballs, a novel form of carbon, he is now at Florida state university. His lecture focused on aspects of creativity and one of his great interests is graphic design. It was a stimulating evening.

I graduated with my first degree from UCLAN and was a graduate student at the university of Sussex when Sir Harry was just starting out as a lecturer there in the late 1960s and have followed his career with interest. He was born and brought up in Lancashire with European immigrant parents and went to Bolton school along with Sir Ian McKellen.

Anyway I tried to get some photos but they are not good. First of all the lectern was in the way and then when he came out from behind it and the lights went on my camera battery died. Grrr...!!

Today in Pictures, a short walk around Bullough Park.

1.Start point, looking over to Rose Place.
2. All this used to be open land, you can just see Hameldon Hill.
3. Changing position, looking over the town.
4. A not to often walked path.
5. A Small Skipper Butterfly posing on the grass stalk.
6. A look around at the bottom of the path before reversing my direction.
7. Walking back up the tarmac path, its hard to believe that this was the location of the air raid shelter I used to play in as a child.
8. Almost at the top of the path.
9. Here we are back at Rose Place after a full circle.
10. Heading for the plateau before going back to the car park

No 7 is what we used to call the black path going from the end of Perth Street up to the park. I can't believe it has overgrown so much. Is the low wall still at the back of Rose Place with the milkman and his bottle carved in the stones on the top?

I almost didnt recognise the place, the trees have covered the area since I used to visit. Rose place looks out over the town, and looks peacfull, bit of not so long ago history, a murderer used to live on that row when I was a supervisor for the section. That though is another story, for another day.

I must be a local name, as that is not what I called black path, that went from the factory bottoms up past black rock, and onto Millerfold Avenue and if you went on further, it came out at Lynches Garage.

I don't recall having a name for the path with the air raid shelter on.

The whole area of Bullough Park now has dense tree cover, with Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam filling in and spaces not covered by trees.
I haven't seen a low wall to the rear, as that is overgrown as well, but will take a closer look next time.

Agreed Dianne - feels like yesterday and it's 45 years at least since i was doing my first degree at what was still Harris College in Preston. What I like about visiting a university as I did on Thurs is the mix of people -young ones having a good time and perhaps doing a little work sometimes, older ones like lecturers, and an atmosphere of intellectualism if that doesn't sound too snobby or patronising.

I spoke to Sir Harry briefly on Thurs and he remembered my PhD supervisor. That was good. As for your gaudy - sounds great but might be a bit intimidating - a bit different from my one to one chat on Thurs! Anyway Dianne, having been there and had the same experiences as me you know how I felt. Very stijmulated afterwards - enough to have my first glass of wine this year, have steered clear of it recently because of being on meds, but I thought what the hell, went down like strawberry pop - well a light fizzy rose on a hot summer day would, wouldn't it?

We knew it as Black Path when we lived on Pendle St. in the 50's 60's and 70's with the donkey steps on your right just before you got there.

I lived on Pendle Street during that period as well. To me Black Path always went past Black Rock, but it is only a locally acquired name, if you take a left halfway up the path to Bullough Park you go past High Street and end up on the lower path. Donkey steps is another name that seems to get put on any long flight of steps. I am not saying any specific name is right or wrong, just what as kids we new them as.

Today in Pictures, Priestly Clough, but not as we know it.

1. Start point Woodnook Vale as it has a path directly to the Clough.
2. About to leave Woodnook Vale.
3. Starting down a road I have not walked for donkeys years, and it looks like I wont walk it again.
4. There used to a bridge over the water to Rothwell House, no longer there, thats the second change of direction.
5. This bit looks a bit un-walked.
6. The foliage got higher the more I walked into it, and it was at this point I nettled my nutmegs.
7. This was the only sighting I could get of Rothwell House.
8. Just over that ridge is Green Haworth, I think it is time to head down hill.
9. The second derelict barn I came across, this is closer to Fern Gore.
10. Not a hundred percent sure, but I think this is Rothwell Mill Farm, but it is individual dwellings now.

The road starts just higher up from King Georges Playing field goes over a bridge across Woodnook Vale, and comes out at Rothwell House. The gate is just over the bridge and parhaps20 yards down from there. I am not sure of the legality of the gate and sign, but I have in the past had to deal with this family and I wouldn't go down the lane without a police escort.

Yes, it has changed - but it's still lush and verdant. Maybe a little too much so - sorry for your nutmegs, Dave. The waterfall is even lovelier without the bridge, I think. In the last shot I recognize Farmer Nelson's dwelling. The last cottage at he back was occupied by a Mr Parker, farm helper circa 1961. He used to ask me and my brother in for tea and biscuits. Many, many thanks Dave for your efforts.

The area around the waterfall due to the footpath being closed had become very overgrown, I bet a lot of people have not seen the water for years, and I managed to find an area I had not walked before, even with the stung nutmegs. So I enjoyed the quest, and if the footpath ever opens again I will be down, but I reckon the cost will stop that.

When I was walking through the farmhouse complex a couple of dogs bolted out of the end house closest to the camera, one a cockapoo and one a Jack Russel, which is exactly the two dogs I have as well( the Jack Russell is borrowed for the walk, but mine whilst out) and spent 10 minutes chatting with the owners, so it was a pleasant few hours overall.

Not a plant that gets much use nowadays, when I was an apprentice there were sweet peas planted at the main gates in Oak Hill Park, the bed on the right had a wall of peas from the gate up to the top of the bed.

Sweet peas are my favourites too - the scent is so lovely, and the colours. They don't need dressing up in a vase - just plonk them in and they look great - and the more you pick them the more they come, and they are so cottagey in the garden. Wonderful!

A couple of days ago, I was trying to work in my pottery studio. Road construction outside was getting annoying, so I went for a little walk down in the park. I took my camera, and these pics resulted. Even though they're not from the Accy area, I thought you might like to see where I live now - the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

1. Going down to the park level.

2. Queen Ann's Lace - at first I thought the red bit in the centre was a bug, but closer inspection revealed it to be red petals. All the flowers in this patch had that, I don't know if it's unusual or not.

3. Chickory, I think (got to learn more about Canadian wild flowers).

4. Going towards the river, dodging the noisy grass cutters and their gigantic machines.

5. Almost there.

6. A shady spot, but no picnic lunch today sadly.

7. The Credit River - a little muddier and running faster than it normally does this time of year. Due to the heavy rains of the past week, I think. Got my feet wet for this one! (inspired by dave mac)

8. They looked pinker in real life.

10. Back to work.

I could not be bothered to go out today it's too hot for my liking so after seeing shillelagh's pictures of flowers I thought I would give it a try. As most of you know I am not much of a fauna and flora chap but it makes a change from my usual subject.
Anyway here a my attempts at nature photographs from my garden.

I should be out there now laid on the grass wearing my woolly swimming costume with baggy legs, drinking wine from an old tin mug.
My sunburnt supple manly body glistening in the afternoon air, muscles rippling, female admirers trying to climb the fence for a better look.
Well I can dream if nowt else.

Today in Pictures, I spent all day transferring emulsion paint from a tin to a few walls, so didn't go out until the sun was going down, so here is Cutwood Park, looking over the res as the sun was going down. The period is about 10 minutes.

Sweet peas are my favourites too - the scent is so lovely, and the colours. They don't need dressing up in a vase - just plonk them in and they look great - and the more you pick them the more they come, and they are so cottagey in the garden. Wonderful!

I thought there was only one ant on there .. on the pollen .. didn't realize till today that there was another one on the flower itself .. mind you I do need new glasses ... anyway heres some more flowers from mine and my neighbours garden .. :D the lily with the bee that was from the other day .. but the rest was took today and tonight ...

Must have been a great growing season judging from the flowers. The lillies are spectacular - never had much luck with them myself.

9.Looking back to where I'd come from.

10. Back to work.

It looks like a nice area -I've never been to Canada though my husband visits every few years for the Royal Winter Show (he's a "dairy" man!)

Apart from watering it the garden cannot be credited to me.
June planned it with a local gardener and over the two years since the house was built it has started to mature. I keep the gardener on and she comes every two weeks.
I always feel sad when I look at it.

As for a self portrait Dianne, this is the best I can do, a bit of artistic licence is needed.
Taken about 1961 at a nuddy beach near Poole.

On a more serious note - look on your garden with a smile and not sadness it's a wonderful legacy which your wife has left. I'm sure she would want you to enjoy her ideas and the fruits of her labours and from the photos I've seen which you've posted now and before it is a really lovely garden! :hothothot

Today in Pictures. Mill Lane to Martholme Lane, then when I had done that I went from Martholme Lane to Mill Lane.

1. Starting out, looking over to Read.
2. Looking to the side, Hapton Scouts.
3. This had to be crept up upon, Meadow Brown butterfly, before I could get any closer it shot off among the brambles.
4. Looking over the water treatment plant.
5. Back on the path, heading for Martholme Lane.
6.These are soldier Beetles, I don't however think they are fighting.
7. Pendle Hill in the distance.
8. The view from Martholme Lane.
9. We take a right turn as we get to the bridge.
10. Heading back, a seat that has seen very little use.

Thanks mobertol. I've been to the Royal a few times myself. Mainly for the horses, but also just to soak up a little country and farm culture. Maybe the best way to see my pots is to look up Williams Mill Arts Centre on google. I'm the one with the curly hair LOL. As for my studio, sadly I'm closing it at the end of this month. After nine years its quite an adjustment. But I'll continue to make pots somehow, just not as many as I did to pay an exorbitant rent.

Today in Pictures, I said I would only be an hour, but I couldn't leave until it had gone almost dark.

1. Drifts of Foxgloves on the way down to the reservoir.
2. The sun is low in the sky, and the colours are golden.
3. A hot air balloon is drifting by.
4. The sun is dropping a bit sharpish now.
5. A thrill for the punters, a low pass before back up again.
6. The sun is just dropping, and the colours are genuine.
7. A bit of zoom and the colours get a bit stronger.
8. Heading back up the hill I am following the sunset.
9. Time to call it a day.
10. It must be bedtime, and time for a Horlicks and a sit down.

And with that it was time to leave Dean Clough.

Yesterday evening a visit to Preston with John o Gaunt Morris men from Lancaster to meet up with the Royal Preston team. The venue was the Continental pub down by the river and the railway bridge at Avenham park. This establishment has suffered a bit over the years but is now a popular watering hole. When I was a student in Preston in the sixties it was one of my haunts as we lived just round the corner.

Anyway here are a few pics of dancers and musicianers, plus some sky if I have room.

Looks like it was a good evening out Sue. Nice selection of instruments and beards -I think the man with the trombone wins for the longest beard. Didn't realise the man with the panama hat could play the accordian :D

Would the trombone count as something with a hole for the competition? I thought the same about that interesting slate wall you posted recently too! ;) (Big hint!)

Thanks, yes it was a good evening, hadn't seen some of those folks for two years or more.

Yes, man in panama plays the squeezebox, I took that photo specially as I have no other record! He enjoys it but he's not very good, doesn't practise. Perhaps I should be grateful he doesn't play much at home - he's off this weekend on a squeezebox gathering on a remote farm in the Peak District nr Sheffield and when they all get together in a metal barn the noise is pretty ear shattering! I did go with him once, but that was cos I wanted to revisit my old haunts - my first job after university was in Sheffield. Now they have a metro - on which I travelled from end to end for nothing with my bus pass!

If you want a bit of history, the traditional instrument for morris dancing is the pipe and tabor - a smqll whistle and a little drum, played at the same time, as seen in the photo of Big Bob the fireman. Not many people play it these days, it's usually more noisy stuff like melodeons and concertinas.

Yes Derek the trombonist has a fine beard but there were one or two others in the Preston team, sadly I didn't get their photos.

Must go through my photos and look for holes...
