The canal is having the banks reinforced at the moment because they are being eroded away by the work of a creature called a Nutria (bit like a little beaver!) they are a real pest over here and cause lot of damage -there's a photo of a family of them on the banks of the canal and one of them in the water!

Well today's number 3 is definitely a Magnolia stellata - a shrub/tree I have always wanted.

As for the little pests - nutria is another name for the coypu which caused a lot of problems in Norfolk and thereabouts, having been imported and farmed when fur coats were all the rage.

Many escaped and damaged the drainage works, and a concerted programme by MAFF eradicated them by 1989. However, in 2012 a 'giant rat' was killed in County Durham, with authorities suspecting that the animal was, in fact, a coypu.

You could try eating them:

Coypu meat is lean and low in cholesterol. While there have been many attempts to establish markets for coypu meat, all documented cases have generally been unsuccessful.

Lovely set of pics Dave -great to catch the horses like that and I love the hyacinth. The trees look to be further behind WRT here - probably just needs a few days sunshine as well as the odd shower of rain to combat the drought you've had this winter, to get spring well and truly underway.

The Coypu are a real problem here - and like in Norfolk escaped or were liberated from specialised farms. They breed at the speed of light, burrow into banks causing extensive damage, eat the shoots of crops and also cause quite a lot of accidents on country roads as they grow to be quite large. Farmer's here can apply for a licence to shoot them.

Spring has started but slowly, There are a lot of the early cherries flowering, the large double types are just colouring up. I am waiting for the bluebells to start so I can re-visit all my woodland walks.

It is the same here with the rain, but it is showers rather that an all day event.

Today in Pictures, more than a moist moment. Remember the droplet season is almost upon us, so if you are getting involved, now is the time to give your gusset a coat of dubbin.

1. Here we go, Hameldon Woods.
2. New Beech leaves.
3. More Beech leaves.
4. A moist Hazel.
5. This is where the Bluebells should be flowering, they might be out by bonfire night.
6. A wall that once divided the woods.
7. Hapton Quarry, lost in the low cloud.
8. Just testing my droplet meter, it's working.
9. The meter found these droplets.
10. Almost out of the woods.

It's escaped being cancelled, as most were, because it's in a tiny hamlet in the middle of no-where. Those that remain are always in out of the way places -some in mountain villages famously have bullet-holes in them!

Love your last set of droplets Dave and I have a soft spot for a dry-stone wall too!

Everything is so green over there, a field of dandelions in seed, that is weeks in front of us.

I dont have a wine cellar, I do however have a bottle of Tizer under the stairs, is that the same thing ?

Today in Pictures, a dis-jointed affair today, I had to start early, I was required to fly a helicopter up to Scotland with vital suplies..........not really had to see my therapist about telling lies.

1.Whitaker Park, Rawtenstall.
2. Never been before so it surprised me as to how big it was, from the road it looks no size at all.
3. Despite overnight snow and frost on the ground flowers are still trying to come out.
4. Even the trees are trying to flower.
5. & 6. flowering current.
7. Looks like its crying, as its cold.
8. Different location, Cutwood Park and much later in the day.
9. With the wickthing filter on, these became apparent.
10. Coming in to land.

Just a bit of trivia, 10% of all the photographs in the world were taken in the last 12 months, so come on people we can do better than that.

Today in Pictures, it was a day when a dubbed gusset didn't just go far enough.

1. Now the droplet season has started just thought I would attach the droplet filter, and here it is the result.
2. A lichen, I do love a Lichen, but never lick a Lichen.
3. There isn't a dry stone wall for miles.
4. No none here.
5. Who would live in a house like this.
6. No, not a dry stone wall to be found anywhere on Pendle Hill.
7. There just had to be a moist moment.
8. If it got any wetter I would be swimming.
9. A wet bit and no dry stone wall.
10. There we have it, we are both moist beyond comfort, time to head home.

The sign seemed to be "promoting" the area?

I had to say driving past it had me fooled, but parking up and taking a good look, it is not my dog, but very similar, still well spotted.

An early morning walk from the tyre fitters back into Castelverde along the cycle path -it was market day. Bought some fresh bread and battered salt cod (very traditional here for a Friday). Saw some beautiful flowers and the first, near perfect poppy. Note the bunch of garlic hanging by the entrance to someone's allotment -to keep away unwanted guests perhaps?!

It would be a good shot from up the clock tower, is it open to the public.

You have cornered the market in the 360* so I will leave those type of photos to the man who can.

I have already had a couple of expeditions to the turbines so wont be going back up anytime soon, so take your time I wont be racing you to the summit. When I went up there was two foot of snow, and you can only take so much fun and I have had mine.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/davemac...in/photostream this link gives you some idea.

Oswaldtwistle Moors, and they are a lot further away than they appear with the naked eye, so allow extra time if you plan to visit.

As one who has travelled through the beasts with the frost nibbling my nutmegs,I would recommend an approach from Grane Road just opposite Calf Hey reservoir, there is a car park (it closes at 5.30pm). Which ever direction you approach from transport will be required. Just remember when you go, you may be gone some time.

I have geo tagged the location in Flickr, click on the map and choose the hybrid or satellite option.

Today in Pictures, another short walk, and some subjects have been shot before, but I hope differently.

1. The colour is a bit stronger.
2. I keep snapping this, I just cant get what is in my minds eye, but time to let it go.
3. I find it is always a help if you carry a pocketful of plastic wickthings.
4. Also in various poses.
5.This shot up since my last visit.
6. As has this, or I just missed it, perhaps its time to take off my balaclava, now its getting a bit warmer.
7. Colourful new leaves on a Pieris.

So with that it was time to put my plastic wickthings back in the box and head for home

A new camera always opens up new possibilities with different functions to play with, you didn't say what sort it is. But happy hunting with it when it arrives

Unfortunately the seller (Martina -son's girlfriend) has had to pull out of the sale. When she mentioned to her mother she was bringing it to show me, she got told off and isn't allowed to sell it as it was a present from her parents. The new one she got at Xmas off her Grand-parents is a better one but they want her to keep it all the same -big disappointment :(

Annual get-together on a stormy May Bank Holiday weekend with friends from Pavia and Venice. Booked into a local Trattoria -The Antico Pavone - The Old Peacock -it's been there, in San Martino in Beliseto, since 1859 as you can see on one of the photos which is a terracotta date-stone. Very rustic place with lots of character -great traditional local dishes and it's excellent value. What more could you ask!
On the menu today a traditional minestrone with Tripe (see photo) not to everyone's taste but very popular here. We all had their signature dish as a main course which is Guinea Fowl Oven-roasted in Clay (see photo of it on a trolley with waitress Barbara) -until about 10 years ago it was cooked directly in the clay but EEC hygiene rules mean they now have to put it in grease-proof paper. It is absolutely delicious and drops off the bone. Buon appetito! :)

Today in Pictures, A walk around the reservoirs, I bet you don't know who drinks this water.

1. Down the hill.
2. I think that tree grew in a windy environment.
3. I am about to hunt for fungi.
4. Found one.
5. Then another.
6. Back to the waterfront.
7. All around the Gorse is out.
8. Marsh Marigolds grow in wet conditions, thats why its coming through the lace-holes.
9. Down the far side, but its not the far side when I am there, the other side is now the far side, until I get there and then..........you get the gist.
10. It's warm enough for the sheep to seek out shade.

The water is pumped over the hill to Parsonage Reservoir, then onto Fishmoor waterworks, and from there into the pipes that supply Blackburn.
