Today in Pictures, on the level today.

1. Yesterday I was up there tramping through snow drifts.
2. Last years Teasel seed head.
3. You wouldn't want that on the end of your nose.
4. Hapton quarry and the start of Hameldon Hill.
5. One side of the viaduct.
6. The river Calder as it heads for Whalley.
7. The other side of the viaduct.
8. Looking across to Whalley Nab.
9. Finishing off with a Burdock seed head outline, against a clear blue sky.

With that we were back at Mill Lane.

It arrived with a whoosh and left just as quick, although we have had a bitter wind blowing today. It doesn't feel like spring is expected just yet

Hope not - we haven't had a proper winter yet. I hate it when people wish away seasons.

First two, Dean Clough Reservoir on a day when the rain was horizontal, then two shots of Cutwood reservoir from the same position, it was that windy I had to duck tape my flat cap on.

I just saw the Land Rover Gremlin posted on the competition -I was going to post this pic of friend Dave's Land Rover taken part way up on the way to the Kirkstone Pass from Ambleside. It's not past it's best though -it has all been galvanised piece by piece, down to the last bolt and has been brought back to life so it looks like new -took 2 years of patient restoration in a garage in Rishton! It's a great vehicle to knock about in in the Lakes and always draws a lot of comments.

Sorry mate, I can't make much of it out either on the old original photo which I took.
It starts off "Todmorden - Cape Town".
I will ask my brother if he remembers what it says, he has just had half an hour on the phone with me as well.
I am going to his house in Walsden on Sunday and will see if he will lend me a few photos of his trip so I can scan them. Maybe it will make a new interesting thread.

I drove it once when he returned and there must have been half a turn of play on the steering wheel.

Today in Pictures, out of town for this one.

1. A bad case of the rivets.
2. Its not spring yet, but they think it is.
3. My first Crocus of the year.
4. Thats a strange tree, with a thick trunk and short branches.
5. Another shot that looks like Spring.
6. This is a bridge that you go over to get to Padiham from Clayton, its just through the lights at Shuttleworth Mead Business Park.
7. A view from the Greenway path.
8. After walking the greenway in both directions, this is the furthest I went in the Burnley direction and this was the turn around point.
9. The weir in the centre of Padiham, and the car park.
10. On the way home.

No 2 is Butterbur (Petasites) if I'm not mistaken. Flowers late winter before the leaves appear and smells nice. We had it in our garden in Wiltshire - very invasive but makes good ground cover when the leaves are out.

they are usually out when spring is about to be sprung. the roads are still being gritted and there is a chance of snow in this area, and I get confused easily.

I just noticed the sign in picture 2. It is in English and says "Caution falling people".

Is it not dangerous having people floating about under canvas bags near and International Airport.

Today in Pictures, reservoirs in reverse, and a mucky tush.

1. As we head up the Coppice to start our walk anti-clockwise.
2. This is the waterfall from the fourth reservoir.
3. We are following the stream uphill, I include this shot, not because of its artistic merit, more the fact that seconds after this shot, my feet slipped off the rock I was standing on and I plunged into the stream, it was past the top of my boots. When my feet touched the stream bed I slipped and then plunged buttocks first into the mudslide adjacent to the stream. How I laughed. anyway back to the numbers.
4. A battering ram of fungi (turkey tail)
5. Back to the uphill task to the reservoirs.
6. This is the fourth one as we are going anti-clockwise.
7. This is number three.
8. This would be number two.
9. This is the number one, hidden from view, you have to search it out.
10. Is it something I said.

I dried out eventually, I did however have to wash the mud off my coat in the stream using my handkerchief, I did get it clean of sorts, and I did feel as cool as a mountain stream afterwards.

I suffer terribly from vertigo so you'd never get me to jump out of a plane Dave! One of the teams that came down were filming their descent with cameras on their helmets as they did some of the acrobatic circles etc -unforunately too high up to photograph. As to the airport being "International" Gremlin, that was just yesterday because I was there and am not Italian! It only has the one small runway and is right next to our national dairy association -if you blow up photo no 7 of yesterday just in front of the guy landing with the orange shute there is a black and white cow and a round sign - the cow is like the ones in Milton Keynes!:D plenty of real ones around the area though - most of the buildings you can see in the background to the shots are dairy farms. My village, Castelverde has over 5000 inhabitants but at least twice as many cows are registered Holsteins with the association in the same area.

Didnt know if I should start a new thread or just bang it in here, im sure mick or neil will move it if its wrong, anyroad as you know I go hiking and try to keep weight down, well have just picked up a small tripod in lidl £8, its a bit flimsyish but it does hold my canon, dont know how well it would do in a gale.
Its meant more for campacts, extends to 105cm, but its a lot lighter and smaller than my others, perfect for them walks and better than balancing camera on cairns n books, they did have about half a dozen in, if you are thinking of getting 1, get it out the box and extend all the legs, just had to exchange mine as it wouldnt extend all the way on 1 leg, putting the legs back in are a bit fiddly too, press in little ball bearings on each section, so if you are a bit bad with fiddly small things (I am sure some of you are thinking something else right now) then I wouldnt bother, hope you find this info usefull

Sorry about the orientation on pics just posted from my phone

Today in Pictures, it was a bit bracing today, it kept blowing my skirt up.

1. After parking on the road up, a quick look at the eventual destination.
2. Looking back at the road just walked.
3. Some type of building with at least two rooms.
4. We can still see the reservoir.
5. Found the wet bits.
6. Another wet bit.
7. He says he's seen a Haddock.
8. Yet another wet bit.
9. The last wet bit before the reservoir.
10. Once at the reservoir, I wasn't sure if I would get back to the car without wet knickers. So I put them in my handbag.

ok game was cancelled so didnt get as long as i would have liked wandering around, but hey ho

here are a few snaps
1 picture of dredger, (i think) taken from the quayside outside of shop that does bacon buttes, except they had stopped serving when i got there, so a pasty n a kit kat had to do :(
2 taken from the bridge over canal on approach to dock
3 had a wander around the marina, this is taken from marina side of Glasson
4 do you fancy living here?, just at side of main car park, from memory i think this is where the Babagee (floating cafe) used to be moored, its not there now, was a little disappointed to be honest!
5 the advert in the window of No.4, do we have any takers?
6 is this a ship or a boat, it looked quite "naval", all white and with no "up top" cabins n stuff, nice though!
7 for the birdbrains
8 taken from other side of marina, car park side
9 snapping into the sun, testing the limits without a UV filter!

trip down memory lane, todays visit, remembering mi mam n dad, n good times when they were with us.

out of my normal comfort zone, but the peaks were calling me, could just see the snowy white peaks off in the distance, calling me! will be with them soon as soon as mrs church lets me play out again (im grounded from stopping out on my own whilst there is snow up there, her rules)

enjoy

Lovely pics Darren, Glasson is such a nice peaceful place for a wander. Love the houseboat in 4, think you're right, that's where the cafe was. And isn't the vessel in 6 what they call a steam yacht, very nice whatever it is!

Yes I can see the snowy peaks from here on the other side of the bay... very inviting - had hardly any snow here at all and certainly none this week.

1. was taken with my phone, i have entered one from my phone in the comp, in the hope it encourages people to take snaps with their phones when out and about, and to show you dont need expensive camera equipment to take pics (even though, my phone cost me more than my camera)

the others are some HDR except the last one thats standard

Spotted a white heron (young one with winter plummage) when coming home so nipped back out to try try and photograph it -it was a bit shy. Spotted some early signs of spring though it's very cold and we are due 30cm snow starting tomorrow afternoon apparently, so the poor violets will be covered up again!

Its only on high ground here at the moment, although that could change if the forcast is correct. Do the moo cows have to stop in ?

They are all "in" at the moment ie sheltered but never in fully enclosed barns as it would be unhygenic. Cows and calves grow thicker coats in winter and prefer colder to hotter weather. Very few of our animals are ever out at pasture, they have outdoor spaces but mostly these are not on grass - it's because of the very high price of land over here and the intensive farming techniques. :)

Looks like you made the right decision -it's so pretty to watch snow falling through the window, preferably in comfort - with a steaming mug of something comforting in hand ;)

Today in Pictures, a traipse up Pendle Hill,....reaching the top it was off with the rucksack, out with the tent, the pans, the sink, the pink high heals and the sou'wester, the number of accessories you can get for Barbie today is outstanding.

1. I am following an old cart track to the Craggs.
2. The number of dry stone walls is vast, what happens when it rains ?
3. We are veering off to the left here.
4. Who would live in a place like this.
5. Almost at the highest point for today.
6. The hills appear to go on forever.
7. Still pockets of the white stuff.
8. I would guess at a Shepard's refuge.
9. We are now going to walk on the ridge till we fall off at the end.
10. Someone is watching the radio controlled gliders.

I can, it is on the canal adjacent to the bridge before you get to the boat repair docks at Altham It is an f1 hybrid and wont cultivate from seeds you have to layer the laces. Its Latin name is Slazenger Smellytrainorus but is referred to by its common name Pumps.

Today in Pictures, a walk I have done many times before.

1. The skies are busy today.
2. Not be long before things are in full bloom.
3. Down to the reservoir we go.
4. A slow perambulation around the perimeter of the wet bits.
5. Halfway around now.
6. Almost at the bottom, the perimeter, not the water.
7. I should have brought a torch. No I shouldn't, it was due to pointing the camera at the sun.

you will have to leave the bush in situ, you will require a small plant pot with compost in, place the plant pot close to the laces and pin down a section of the lace into the pot without cutting it from the main stem. You could also try cuttings, but these are less successful due to the amount of canvas.
